Chapter 438: 438:Lessons.

He remembered the candidate from Antony’s entrance examination who had activated his own emergency beacon rather than endanger everyone, but this was a different situation.

"If we can protect them, we do."

Peter waited.

"And if you can’t?"

Silver’s expression became serious.

"Then I’d need more information before deciding whether I’m sacrificing twenty-two other people for one."

The room became quiet.

Peter didn’t criticize him.

He looked around.

"That answer made some of you uncomfortable."

Nobody responded.

"It should." He returned to the map. "Command frequently does."

The scenario continued for nearly an hour. Peter changed conditions. It was bot to defeat their plans but to expose assumptions.

At one point Ravenna proposed using a concentrated attack to break through a narrow hostile concentration.

Peter asked how much energy she’d have afterward.

Ravenna recalculated to a lesser one and modified the attack to a smaller area with a shorter duration, enough to create passage rather than kill everything.

Peter nodded.

"Better."

Helena proposed moving barriers rather than maintaining one enormous defensive wall. Shirley suggested scouting from concealment.

Mina used vibration sensing to monitor approaching beasts through the ground. Caleb wanted to remain rear guard.

Each idea became part of something larger.

By the end, Class Four had constructed a plan no single student had originally proposed.

And then Peter destroyed it all.

REINFORCEMENT STATUS: CANCELLED

Groans filled the classroom but Peter ignored them.

VEHICLE FAILURE: COMPLETE

More groans followed.

Ravenna dropped her head into one hand while Silver laughed.

Peter looked delighted for the first time all morning.

"Now what?"

Caleb stared at him.

"Sir, respectfully, I think the universe hates this patrol."

Even Peter laughed.

The class joined him.

Then the instructor changed the display and the simulation disappeared.

A photograph of the six Contractors, seventeen civilians and a battered transport vehicle replaced it.

Silver’s smile faded.

Peter looked at them.

"This wasn’t an academy exercise." Silence filled the room. "This happened."

He changed the image and a report appeared.

"The patrol’s original plan was to remain with the vehicle until reinforcement."

Caleb looked toward the screen.

Peter continued.

"That plan lasted eleven minutes."

Another image, of a damaged road.

"The beast population was larger than initial intelligence suggested."

Another.

"The vehicle failed."

Another.

"Communications were lost."

Peter turned toward them.

"The squad leader abandoned the original plan."

Nobody spoke.

"They distributed essential medicine among those capable of carrying it, abandoned approximately thirty percent of the cargo, created improvised carrying equipment for the injured Contractor and moved through the forest."

Shirley leaned forward.

Peter continued.

"They did not reach the settlement."

A few expressions changed.

"They reached an abandoned agricultural station approximately six kilometers away and fortified it."

Helena nodded slowly.

"They remained there until morning."

Peter changed the screen.

SURVIVORS: 23/23

The room became completely silent.

Peter looked around.

"They failed to deliver all the medicine on schedule."

He paused.

"They lost the vehicle."

Another pause.

"They abandoned supplies."

He looked toward the class.

"And every person under their protection survived."

Silver stared at the photograph.

Peter shut off the display.

"The lesson isn’t that their final decision was perfect."

He walked slowly across the front of the room.

"It wasn’t." His voice remained calm. "The lesson is that their first plan failed."

He looked toward Caleb.

"Their second plan failed."

Helena.

"Their communications failed."

Shirley.

"Their vehicle failed."

Ravenna.

"Their reinforcement failed to arrive."

Finally Silver.

"The squad did not."

Peter stopped.

"A bad leader continues following a plan because changing it feels like admitting they were wrong."

Nobody moved.

"A mediocre leader makes a good plan."

Peter placed both hands against the desk.

"A good leader makes a plan that can survive being wrong."

Silver remembered that.

Peter looked around Class Four.

"You will never have complete information." His gaze settled briefly on Silver. "Sometimes asking questions is the correct first move."

Then Ravenna.

"Sometimes you won’t have time."

Helena.

"Sometimes holding ground saves everyone."

Shirley.

"Sometimes staying together gets everyone surrounded."

His gaze moved across all thirty-one.

"Your job isn’t to memorize one correct answer."

Peter straightened.

"Your job is to recognize when the answer you chose stopped being correct."

The bell sounded but nobody moved immediately.

Peter picked up his tablet.

"Physical conditioning in fifteen minutes."

The entire class groaned.

Peter smiled.

"Now you’re learning."

---

Ravenna caught Silver in the corridor afterward.

"You asked too many questions."

Silver looked toward her.

"Peter liked it."

"He tolerated it."

"He called it correct."

"He said sometimes it’s correct."

Silver smiled.

"Jealous?"

Ravenna stared at him.

"Of what?"

"My excellent tactical mind."

"You said you didn’t have a plan."

"Exactly. Revolutionary."

Ravenna shook her head.

Silver laughed.

They walked toward the conditioning field. After several steps, Ravenna spoke again.

"I liked the part about the medicine."

Silver looked at her.

"Abandoning it?"

"Being willing to." She adjusted the sword case over her shoulder. "I think I would’ve tried too hard to save everything."

Silver considered.

"You would’ve tried to create a route."

"Probably."

"And burned through too much energy."

Ravenna nodded.

"Probably."

She didn’t sound embarrassed. She sounded thoughtful.

"I need to stop treating my strongest attack like it’s automatically the best answer."

Silver smiled.

"Peter already told you that."

"I know."

"So did I."

Ravenna looked at him.

"When?"

Silver thought.

"I’ve probably implied it."

"That doesn’t count."

"Then Peter told you."

Ravenna laughed.

They reached the stairs.

Silver glanced around.

Students surrounded them. For once he didn’t reach for her hand and Ravenna didn’t reach for his either.

Not because they didn’t want to, no, they were discussing class, thinking about the next session and settling into something new.

Ravenna bumped her shoulder against his.

Silver looked over.

"You still owe me the system explanation."

"After classes."

"And the core."

"After classes."

"You said you received a lot."

"I did."

"How much?"

Silver smiled.

Ravenna narrowed her eyes.

"Twenty thousand eight hundred and seventy-three."

She stopped walking.

Silver continued two steps before noticing.

He turned.

Ravenna stared at him, her eyes widened.

"How much?"

Silver’s smile widened.

"Come on. We’re going to be late."

"Silver Ruddington."

Several students looked toward them.

Silver started laughing.

Ravenna caught up immediately.

"You are explaining everything after class."

"I will."

"Everything."

"Everything."

"And we’re checking that Tier Two core."

"Yes."

"And if you spent all of those points already, I’m going to hit you."

Silver looked at her.

"I haven’t spent any."

"Good."

"Except the thirty attribute points."

Ravenna stopped again but Silver kept walking.

Behind him came a very controlled, very dangerous voice.

"Silver."

He smiled and increased his pace toward the conditioning field.

Ravenna followed after, trying to catch up but Silver increased his pace the moment she got closer every single time.
