Chapter 55: She Absolutely Must Not Help Her Father Break Her Mother’s Heart Again
Chapter 55: Chapter 55: She Absolutely Must Not Help Her Father Break Her Mother’s Heart Again
"WAAAH!"
"I hate you, Father! You’re biased! You only like Miche and don’t like me anymore!" Amy bawled, her eyes full of disappointment as she looked at Loki.
Amy’s emotional volatility had spiked drastically, and coupled with her ongoing fever, her tiny body couldn’t handle the sudden shock. She passed out on the spot.
Terrified, Loki scrambled to catch Amy and gathered her into his arms.
"Amy, what’s wrong? Wake up." He gently shook her small frame. "Father was wrong. I’ll never yell at you again. Please, wake up."
No matter what, Amy was his daughter. He had regretted the slap the moment his hand fell.
Even Miche was startled by the scene.
"Loki, Amy isn’t faking it, is she?" Miche asked in a soft, frail voice. She bit her lip, a look of doubt on her face.
Loki froze. Recalling how selfishly Amy had acted yesterday, he realized it was entirely possible she was faking her illness.
"She’s getting more and more like her mother!" His face instantly darkened. He carried Amy back into the stone house, callously tossed her onto the bed, and walked out.
It took a long time for Loki to cool down. After washing up, he returned to his own stone house to rest. Lying in bed, he kept replaying the events of the past two days in his mind. He couldn’t figure out why Amy had developed such a malicious heart despite not being raised by Ophelia. Miche was gentle, kind to everyone, and couldn’t possibly have influenced a child to be this wicked.
Ultimately, Loki pinned the blame for Amy’s lying squarely on Ophelia. Regardless of the truth, it certainly wasn’t his fault. Lost in thought, he unconsciously drifted off to sleep.
The next morning.
Rapid knocking on his door abruptly woke him, accompanied by the frantic voice of the young female.
"Loki! Please, save my brother. He has a fever."
Hearing Miche’s voice, Loki hurriedly opened the door. She frantically grabbed his hands, her eyes brimming with panic and fear.
Miche had suffered from a fever herself, so she knew exactly how agonizing it could be—and more importantly, she knew the current climate within the Snow Wolf Clan. The tribe’s desire to exile sick members was growing stronger by the day. If she didn’t cure her brother quickly, he was highly likely to be driven out.
No, she couldn’t lose this brother. She still had many inconvenient tasks that required him to do them on her behalf. He couldn’t die yet!
"But Amy hid the medicine. I can’t find it anywhere," Loki sighed. After returning yesterday, he had ransacked the stone house but found no trace of the medicine packets.
Miche’s eyes flickered as she wept delicate tears. "Why don’t you go ask Ophelia to borrow some more medicine? My brother has been the only one who treated me best since I was little. Loki, I can’t live without him."
She knew perfectly well that Amy didn’t have any medicine left, but Galen’s illness had struck too fast, too suddenly, and it was incredibly severe. She figured that just two packets of medicine definitely wouldn’t be enough to cure him anyway, which was why she had set her sights on Ophelia.
Miche’s tears fell one by one onto the back of Loki’s hand, stinging his skin like scalding flames.
Seeing that Loki hadn’t responded and was still hesitating, Miche decided to turn up the pressure. Weeping with increasing heartbreak, she swayed unsteadily on her feet and plunged straight into his arms.
Loki was quick to catch her, wrapping his arms around her waist to support her.
"I didn’t mean to. I just felt a little dizzy and lost my footing," she murmured. Pressing a pale hand against her temple, Miche looked up at Loki with teary, apologetic, and aggrieved eyes.
She opened her mouth to say something else but suddenly broke into a fit of coughing. She coughed until tears streamed down her face, making it impossible to tell whether they were tears of sorrow or a physical reaction.
Loki’s heart ached to see Miche this frantic over Galen. He held her close, gently patting her back to help her catch her breath. His main concern was that her excessive grief might cause her cold to relapse into another fever.
"I want to ask Ophelia for it too, but she won’t give it to me," he said. "You know how she treats me now. It’s like she’s a completely different person."
"Then you can take Amy with you. Her illness isn’t too bad right now, is it? You can use her as an excuse to bring back more medicine," Miche suggested softly, tugging at the corner of Loki’s shirt.
"She won’t give it. Amy cried so hard before, and she still refused. She even tried to chase Amy away," Loki replied. The events at the Golden Dragon Clan were still fresh in his mind. He knew exactly how cold-blooded and ruthless Ophelia could be; no matter how much he pleaded, she wouldn’t soften.
"Then go beg Laxus! He’s the one who took pity and gave you the medicine last time, isn’t he? Now that Amy’s condition is more severe, he’ll definitely give you more once he finds out.
"Laxus is soft-hearted. You might even be able to get extra medicine, which you can use to save the other sick members of the Snow Wolf Clan.
"If you do that, your prestige in the tribe will definitely skyrocket, making it even easier for you to become the Clan Leader."
Miche knew exactly what Loki cared about most. Manipulating people was what she did best, and sure enough, Loki swallowed her words hook, line, and sinker.
In the adjacent room, Amy had woken up the moment Miche knocked on the door. Curious, she had crawled out of bed and cracked her door open to eavesdrop on her father and Miche.
Every word of their conversation drifted through the gap in the door and into her ears. At that moment, she clearly saw the true faces of her father and Miche. To them, she was nothing more than a tool to acquire medicine. She absolutely could not let them use her to deceive her mother and uncle again.
"Father, I won’t go!" she shouted through the door before swiftly shutting it.
"Amy! You are a female cub of our Snow Wolf Clan! You should contribute to the tribe, not be as cold-blooded as your mother!" Loki barked, choking with anger.
"Amy, I know you’re still mad at me for drinking your medicine," Miche pleaded, her face full of urgency as she slapped the door. "If you’re really that angry, take it out on me, but please don’t vent your frustrations at the expense of our tribemates’ lives! They’re so sick, they’ll really die!"
Profoundly disappointed, Amy firmly refused. "I won’t help you beg for medicine! Just give up!"
CRASH.
Loki violently kicked the door open. Then, a sharp, crisp SLAP echoed through the room.
Loki had struck Amy once again.
Even as a young female from the Fox Clan, Miche could think about the Snow Wolf Clan and about him. Yet Amy, his own flesh and blood, was so utterly selfish.
The slap left Amy frozen in place. Her eyes widened in disbelief as a fiery, stinging pain bloomed across her cheek.
With red-rimmed eyes, she cried, "Father, you hit me again. I’m your biological daughter!"
Amy regretted everything. She decided she would never like her father again; he was a bad male who only cared about Miche.
"I won’t go to the Golden Dragon Clan with you," Amy declared, a stubborn gleam in her eyes.
She absolutely could not help her father break her mother’s heart ever again.
