Chapter 49: Chapter 49: "Such an Ingrate Doesn’t Deserve to Be My Sister’s Child!"

Laxus turned swiftly at the sound, his eyes gleaming with a faint, vigilant light as he scanned his surroundings.

During the rainy season, many tribespeople lost their homes and families or were driven out. To survive, they would do anything, even threatening those with shelter to part with their food and seizing their homes. There were even starving beasts driven mad by hunger that would attack people. Laxus remained highly cautious, ready for battle at a moment’s notice.

Seeing this, Loki quickly hid behind a nearby large tree, but his shadow cast upon the ground gave him away.

Laxus narrowed his eyes. He carefully edged toward the tree and swiftly threw a punch in Loki’s direction.

"Don’t! Don’t attack, it’s me, Loki!" Cradling Amy in his arms, Loki didn’t have a free hand to defend himself. He could only shout to reveal his identity.

Laxus halted his fist. His eyes brimmed with disgust and disdain as he looked at Loki. "What are you doing here?"

"It’s Amy. She’s sick and running a constant fever. Laxus, you have to get the Golden Dragon Clan’s healer to save her! If she doesn’t get help soon, she’s going to die!" For the sake of Amy’s life, Loki cast aside his pride, his tone laced with begging. Fearing Laxus wouldn’t believe him, he even took the initiative to hold Amy out for the other man to see.

Amy was still asleep. Her cheeks were flushed red, and her breathing grew increasingly heavy, as if a boulder were lodged in her chest, making every breath a struggle.

Even though Amy was his sister’s daughter, Laxus had seen with his own eyes and heard with his own ears how the girl claimed to dislike her mother, even calling her vicious. Yet, facing this little female cub who bore a striking resemblance to Ophelia when she was young, an uncontrollable trace of heartache washed over him. After all, she was his sister’s child. They shared the same bloodline.

Loki noticed Laxus’s slight wavering and quickly struck while the iron was hot. "Laxus, Amy is Ophelia’s daughter, no matter what. She carries a part of the same blood as you. Do you really have the heart to watch her die of illness?"

Laxus pressed his lips together in silence. Deep down, he didn’t want Amy to die. After a long moment, he shouted toward the healer’s residence, "Grayson!"

Grayson had become quite skilled in brewing traditional herbal medicine. He was now fully capable of taking care of patients.

"Don’t call for him, Laxus. I refuse to save her." Ophelia emerged from the stone house, her hands clasped behind her back and her expression exceptionally cold. There wasn’t the slightest hint of worry or heartache in her azure eyes. It was as if the person lying before her was entirely insignificant—someone less than a beggar on the street.

"Ophelia, Amy is your cub. Are you truly going to be this heartless?" Loki looked at Ophelia in disbelief, attempting to emotionally blackmail her with family ties.

However, Ophelia merely shook her head with apathy. "I won’t save her. Take her back, and don’t ever set foot in the Golden Dragon Clan again!"

In her slumber, Amy vaguely heard Ophelia’s voice and struggled to wake up. She heard Loki begging her mother to save her, and her mother bluntly refusing, leaving her to die.

If she couldn’t recover from this illness, she wouldn’t be able to return to the Snow Wolf Clan. If that happened, only death awaited her. She was still so young. She didn’t want to die.

At this thought, Amy burst out crying. WAAAH! Large teardrops rolled down her flushed cheeks, making her face look like a peeled red egg scalded by boiling water. Where the tears fell, a faint layer of white steam even seemed to rise.

"Mother, I don’t want to die! Please save me, okay?

"WAAAH! Mother, I know I was wrong. Please save me!

"I don’t want to be kicked out of the Snow Wolf Clan. I promise I’ll never say bad things about you again!"

Tyler stood beside Ophelia, his brows furrowed tightly as he watched Amy cry her heart out.

Meanwhile, Grayson had been in the kitchen brewing herbal medicine. When he first heard someone call his name, he was a bit confused, thinking he had misheard. Now, Amy’s piercing cries disturbed him, prompting him to step outside to take a look. He immediately witnessed the scene of Amy begging Ophelia for help.

Had this been any other ordinary day, Grayson would have stepped in to administer treatment long ago. But this was Ophelia’s daughter, and Ophelia herself had stated she wouldn’t save her. He wasn’t about to meddle in someone else’s business.

Even though Laxus felt a pang of pity, he didn’t voice any persuasion. He knew the knot in his sister’s heart and wasn’t willing to make her suffer any grievances.

"Go back," Ophelia said. "I’m not going to save her."

Amy panicked completely. She struggled to get down from Loki’s arms and lunged toward Ophelia. "Mother, I was wrong! Will you give me a hug? WAAAH!"

She thought, "Since crying isn’t working, I’ll use a hug to reawaken Mother’s love for me."

Ophelia watched with cold indifference. Just as Amy was about to reach her, she took two steps back, dodging the embrace.

Amy stared at the young female in disbelief, her voice hoarse. "Mother."

"I said, go back."

Now, whenever Ophelia looked at Amy, all she could think of was the scene where her daughter urged Miche to eat her heart. The reason her spirit had died in her previous life wasn’t just because of Loki’s betrayal and Miche’s scheming; it was also due to the backstabbing from her own biological daughter.

It was her very own daughter who looked down on her as a mother, choosing instead to fawn over that two-faced hypocrite, Miche. Now that she was living a second life, she refused to let these people become stumbling blocks in her path. They could forget about trying to emotionally blackmail her with family ties!

She truly wanted nothing to do with this ungrateful wretch of a daughter anymore! Otherwise, she would be doing a disservice to her past self!

"Ophelia, you’re a cold, heartless monster! You won’t even save your own biological daughter!" Loki cursed angrily.

"Say whatever you want. I won’t save her. Take her away and don’t sully the Golden Dragon Clan’s territory." Ophelia forced herself not to look at Amy; even a single glance made her feel sick to her stomach.

Loki was blinded by rage at Ophelia’s absolute refusal to help. "You ruthless bitch, you don’t deserve to be Amy’s mother at all!"

The moment those words left his mouth, Tyler shoved Loki, nearly sending him tumbling to the ground. "What right do you have to say that? Do you have no idea how Amy treated Ophelia in the past?"

Before the rainy season, the Golden Dragon Clan had been stockpiling prey, so even the males hadn’t gone hungry. The Snow Wolf Clan, however, was a different story. They were currently starving more often than they ate. Loki’s originally robust physique had already grown gaunt. He wasn’t as strong as Tyler, either. When he tried to push back, the force rebounded, causing him to stumble back several paces.

Ali had only recently recovered, and her body was still somewhat weak. But upon hearing Ophelia being bullied, an unknown surge of strength filled her. She dashed out quickly and spoke up in her defense.

"Exactly! When she needs Ophelia, she cries ’Mother,’ but when she doesn’t, she hurls insults!

"Such an ungrateful wretch doesn’t deserve to be Ophelia’s child!

"And Ophelia doesn’t need a daughter like her!"
