Chapter 105: Chapter 105: Today is Miche’s First Time Facing Death

A few days later.

They discovered a problem with the rice paddies. The originally bright green leaves were now slightly yellowed and curled, as if they had been scorched by fire.

The male who had inspected the paddies noticed this and hurried to report it to Loki. Loki rushed over to take a look and panicked.

"How did it turn out like this? Haven’t you been following Ophelia’s steps the whole time?"

The questioned male looked just as bewildered. "I don’t know! I definitely followed her steps."

"If you didn’t do anything wrong, why do the rice seedlings look like this?" Loki’s face darkened.

"Maybe this is just what happens after sprinkling that powder. Ophelia’s rice leaves might have yellowed too," the male said, somewhat afraid and trying to defend himself.

"Maybe? Are you just guessing how to grow rice? Hurry up and go check!"

The male broke out in a cold sweat. He was just about to head to the Fu Clan when a slender, graceful figure walked over.

"There’s no need to check," Miche said. "Ophelia’s rice shows no signs of yellowing."

"Then why did ours turn out like this?" Loki pulled his hair in frustration. His father had already declared that if anything went wrong with the rice, he could forget about being the Clan Leader.

"Could you let me see the stones you brought back from the mountain earlier?" Miche asked after a moment of deep thought.

"Yes, of course! We still have a lot left." The male, as if grasping at a lifeline, hurriedly dug out a white stone from a dirt mound.

Miche ground the stone into a powder and sprinkled water over it. She pinched a small clump of the powder to observe it closely, but within moments, she felt a burning sensation on her fingers. She quickly washed the powder off her hands with clean water, her expression changing drastically.

"There’s something wrong with this stone."

"Something wrong with the stone?" Loki and the male were both startled.

Miche nodded. "The powder from this stone heats up when it touches water. The rice was burned by it."

Loki grew anxious. "What do we do now?"

"Dig up the rice, wash the roots with clean water, and replant them somewhere else. Let’s see if we can save them." Miche rubbed her fingers together, still feeling a lingering burning sensation.

Hearing this, Loki immediately started digging, uprooting the rice from the field. The other male didn’t dare delay either, bending over to dig alongside him.

However, the limewater had been sprinkled days ago. Even with this rescue effort, only a small fraction of the rice survived—an area covering roughly two square meters.

Several days later.

Zerev received news that someone was trading white sugar at the western market. Although he wasn’t sure if the information was true, he still led his men there to make an arrest. Because he had rushed out in a hurry, Zerev wasn’t wearing a mask.

As soon as he entered the market, the mastermind behind the stolen sugar recognized him.

"Caesar, it’s you!" Zerev looked mildly surprised when he saw the sugar thief.

Caesar was a male from the Phoenix Clan, a noble family whose status in the Holy Capital was second only to the Winged Dragon Clan. Zerev simply couldn’t understand why Caesar, a proud member of the Phoenix Clan, would steal sugar to sell!

"Zerev, we grew up together. Just let me go. Pretend you never saw me.

"As long as I can sell off this batch of sugar, I promise I’ll never do something like this again," Caesar pleaded.

But Zerev had always been strictly impartial. Furthermore, his investigation into the stolen sugar was not solely the Winged Dragon Clan’s business, but a joint operation by all the noble families in the Holy Capital. Even if he could help cover it up for a while, he couldn’t hide it forever. He wasn’t the only one sent out to search; there might even be members of the Phoenix Clan nearby.

"Caesar, does the Phoenix Clan’s Family Head know about you stealing sugar? You should just come back with me and admit your mistake. You might still be able to get a lenient punishment."

"No, Zerev, if I go back with you, I’m as good as dead." Seeing that he couldn’t persuade Zerev, Caesar had no choice but to turn around and flee.

Zerev and his men pursued him relentlessly, rapidly closing the distance between them. Seeing that he was about to be caught, Caesar reached out and grabbed a small female standing nearby, using her as a human shield.

He bared his sharp claws. "Stop right there, Zerev! If you don’t want this female to die, let me leave."

The icy chill of the male’s claws pressed against her slender neck, causing Miche to cry out in terror.

"Mr. Zerev, save me! I don’t want to die!"

"Oh, so you know each other? Don’t tell me this is a little lover you found out here.

"If that’s the case, you really have to let me go. Otherwise, your little lover’s life is forfeit."

"Mr. Zerev, I know I was wrong! I’ll never dare to cross you again. Please save me!" Miche pleaded helplessly, knowing Zerev was her only savior.

"I don’t know her. Do whatever you want with her."

Miche never expected Zerev to say something so cold-blooded.

"Zerev, males have a natural duty to protect females! Are you really going to watch him kill me?"

Zerev’s eyes were indifferent, devoid of any emotion. "What does it matter to me if you live or die?"

If Miche hadn’t been a female, she would have died the moment she dared to drug him.

"No, Zerev, save me! I promise I’ll never bother you again!" Miche sobbed, tears streaming down her face. She looked incredibly pitiful and terrified.

However, Zerev’s expression remained completely unchanged. He even waved at the men behind him, saying coldly, "Ignore the female’s life or death. Catch him."

Caesar hadn’t anticipated Zerev being this ruthless. Even though they were from the Holy Capital, they still followed the Beast God’s laws to protect females. Otherwise, they would be struck by divine punishment, becoming Wandering Beasts and forever losing the chance to find a mate. Their descendants would also become Wandering Beasts, driven away by all the tribes.

Miche couldn’t believe Zerev genuinely intended to leave her to die. She had come alone today; neither Loki nor her brother Galen were present.

Seeing that the male’s claws were about to slice open her neck, she gritted her teeth and stomped heavily on his foot. As Caesar cried out in pain, she grabbed whatever was at hand and smashed it wildly against him. While Caesar was dodging, she broke free from his grip and swiftly fled.

But Caesar was too cunning and ultimately managed to escape Zerev’s pursuit.

A short while later.

Miche rushed back to the Snow Wolf Clan in a panic, her heart still THUMPING wildly in her chest.

Just then, a figure slipped inside.

"You—what are you doing here?" Miche stared at the male before her in terror.

Caesar raised his eyes and glared at her coldly. "Keep your mouth shut, or I’ll kill you right now."

"Okay, okay! I definitely won’t tell anyone you’re here. Just please don’t kill me!"

In all her twenty-odd years of life, today was the first time Miche had directly faced death. Her gentle, considerate persona meant nothing compared to her own survival.

"Go get me some medicine for my wounds and bring me some food." Caesar sat on the bed, clutching a wound on his abdomen, his face deathly pale.

Miche nodded repeatedly and hurried out of the stone house. However, instead of going to the tribal doctor for medicine, she changed her route and headed straight for Loki’s stone house.
