I Chose Infinite Wealth in the Apocalyptic Game
Chapter 26: A Clean Sweep
At the exact same instant, the exact same tragedy unfolded in seven other corners of the world.
In the Canadian Shield, ThunderG was jolted awake by the violent shudder of the earth. He didn’t even have time to swing his legs out of his memory foam mattress before forty tons of high explosives shattered the bedrock beneath him. The electrical arcs he tried to summon were swallowed whole as the roof of the cavern collapsed, burying him and twenty-nine others under billions of pounds of ancient Canadian granite.
In the blistering sands of the Sahara’s Ahaggar mountains, the subterranean detonation created a massive sinkhole on the surface, swallowing the bunker whole as sand and shattered stone poured into the fiery crater.
In Siberia, the deep explosion cracked the frozen earth for miles, sending plumes of black smoke and radioactive steam hissing through fissures in the snow before the ice shelf gave way and crushed the installation flat.
In Patagonia, the basalt cliffs caved into the mountain ravines.
In Australia, the red granite plateau collapsed into a bowl of dust.
In East Asia, the inland karsts shattered like brittle glass.
And on the desolate ice sheets of Antarctica, the frozen mountain range groaned as the foundations beneath Site 8 disintegrated, dragging the facility down into the dark abyss of the continental shelf.
Inside the quiet, warm command center of St. Jude’s Spire, the big screen flickered.
Julius Vance sat calmly in his chair, taking a slow sip of his hot black tea.
Across the thirty-meter wall display, the eight emerald status boxes of [Project Sirens] flashed amber, then crimson, and finally went dead black one after another:
[SITE 01: CANADIAN SHIELD] - SIGNAL LOST (STRUCTURAL CATASTROPHE) [SITE 02: PATAGONIA] - SIGNAL LOST (STRUCTURAL CATASTROPHE) [SITE 03: SWISS ALPS] - SIGNAL LOST (STRUCTURAL CATASTROPHE) [SITE 04: SAHARA MASSIF] - SIGNAL LOST (STRUCTURAL CATASTROPHE) [SITE 05: SIBERIA] - SIGNAL LOST (STRUCTURAL CATASTROPHE) [SITE 06: EAST ASIA] - SIGNAL LOST (STRUCTURAL CATASTROPHE) [SITE 07: AUSTRALIA] - SIGNAL LOST (STRUCTURAL CATASTROPHE) [SITE 08: ANTARCTICA] - SIGNAL LOST (STRUCTURAL CATASTROPHE) -------------------------------------------------- SEISMIC CONFIRMATION : 8/8 DETONATIONS SUCCESSFUL SURVIVOR PROBABILITY : 0.00%
Elena Santos stared at the seismic spikes on her terminal. The needles had jumped violently across all global monitoring stations, registering localized magnitude-6 earthquakes at each coordinate before settling back into flat, dead lines.
"All eight nodes are gone, Mr. Vance," Elena said quietly, her voice trembling just slightly. "The foundations completely collapsed. The facilities don’t exist anymore. There’s nothing down there but pulverized stone."
Colonel Mercer stood stiffly beside the railing, his face completely expressionless. He had spent his entire adult life in war zones, commanding elite private military units and orchestrating black operations. He had seen airstrikes, artillery barrages, and brutal firefights.
But this?
Wiping out two hundred and forty of the most powerful, dangerous metahumans on Earth with a single press of a button while sitting four hundred meters under the sea drinking Earl Grey tea?
It was beyond warfare. It was cold, industrial extermination.
"A clean strike, sir," Mercer managed to say, clearing his throat. "No loose ends."
Julius didn’t look at them. His eyes were locked on his smartphone, which had begun chiming incessantly.
A flood of bright crimson system notifications began rolling across the screen, glowing with divine, golden borders that nearly blinded the dark room:
[Trial Alert: Candidate Elimination Confirmed.]
[Candidate #012 (ThunderG) has been eliminated.]
[Candidate #045 (Viper) has been eliminated.]
[Candidate #088 (Bloodhound) has been eliminated.]
[Candidate #104 (GaleForce) has been eliminated.]
[Candidate #156 (StoneWall) has been eliminated.]
[Candidate #203 (PlasmaRay) has been eliminated.]
[...]
[...]
The names scrolled past in an unbroken red blur.
Ten. Fifty. One hundred. Two hundred.
Two hundred and forty times the chime rang out in Julius’s mind, a rhythmic, mechanical death knell for the strongest champions of Alternate Earth.
When the notifications finally stopped, a single, grand system banner unfolded across the interface:
[Phase 1 Status Update: Day 68]
[Total Casualties Recorded: 252 (Past 24 Hours)]
[Current Candidates Remaining: 236 / 500]
[Survival Pool Reduced by More Than 50%.]
Julius slowly set his teacup back down on the warmer.
Two hundred and thirty-six left.
Over half the entire competition had been wiped off the board in less than five seconds.
And the beauty of it was that the remaining two hundred and thirty-six weren’t hidden away in warm, secure fortresses. They were the slow ones. The wounded ones. The desperate, shivering wretches who had arrived at the mountain entrances too late, only to find the blast doors permanently locked.
They were currently stranded on muddy cliff tops in the freezing rain, surrounded by the bodies of the people they had failed to kill, with zero food, zero shelter, and zero hope.
Julius tapped open the [World Chat].
The channel was an absolute madhouse:
— [Swift]: WHAT JUST HAPPENED?!
— [LoneWolf]: The mountain... the Canadian mountain just blew up! I was sitting in the woods two miles away and the whole peak collapsed into a cloud of fire!
— [AlpineTracker]: The Swiss bunker is gone! It imploded! The entire mountain face slid down into the valley! I felt the shockwave from five miles out!
— [SandStorm]: The Sahara site collapsed into a giant pit! Smoke and radiation alarms are going off everywhere!
— [ShadowStep]: ThunderG’s name is grayed out... Viper is dead... Bloodhound is dead... ALL OF THEM ARE DEAD!
— [IronSeeker]: Every single person who went inside the bunkers... they were killed at the exact same second!
— [Swift]: It was Vance. Oh my God, it was Vance...
— [LoneWolf]: HE DIDN’T BUILD SHELTERS! HE BUILT COFFINS!
The chat scroll exploded into pure, unadulterated hysteria.
The surviving players were weeping, screaming, and cursing Julius’s name in languages from across the globe. The realization had finally crashed through their skulls: Julius Vance hadn’t given them a chance to survive. He had set a trap, baited it with fresh meat and warm beds, waited until the most dangerous predators had crammed themselves inside, and then closed the lid and ignited the fuse.
They had thought he was a fool with too much money.
They had thought his lack of combat abilities made him weak.
Now, they knew the truth.
The man holding the infinite bank account was the most terrifying monster in the entire game.
— [ShadowStep]: Julius... please. Why did you do this? We just wanted to survive...
— [Swift]: You’re a demon. You’re a sick, twisted demon.
— [LoneWolf]: Come out of your island, Vance! Fight us like a man! Don’t hide behind buttons, you coward!
Julius looked down at the screen, his expression serene, his posture relaxed.
He placed his fingers on the keyboard and typed a single message into the global channel:
[Julius (Rank 456)]: "I told you from day one. I don’t know how to fight. I only know how to spend money."
He paused, then added:
[Julius (Rank 456)]: "The bunkers were seventy billion dollars well spent. Stay warm out there, survivors. The rain isn’t stopping anytime soon."
He hit send.
The chat went completely silent. Not a single person cursed him. Not a single person threatened him. The sheer, overwhelming weight of his cruelty had broken whatever spirit they had left.
Julius locked the phone and slid it back into the pocket of his dark suit.
He stood up from his desk, smoothing the fabric of his jacket, and walked over to the edge of the brass observation railing.
Down in the lower levels of St. Jude’s Spire, the fortress hummed with vibrant, peaceful life. The smell of fresh bread drifted through the ventilation from the central kitchens. Children’s laughter echoed softly from the modular schoolrooms in Residential Sector B. Elena’s nuclear cores glowed with steady, infinite power, and outside the four-foot titanium blast doors, the Atlantic waves crashed against eighty meters of unyielding basalt.
Commander Croft stepped up beside him, his boots clicking softly on the floor.
"What are your orders, Mr. Vance?" Croft asked, his voice low and respectful.
Julius looked up at the countdown timer embedded in the top corner of the thirty-meter holo-display.
[PHASE 1: THE WEEPING HEAVENS — ONGOING]
[CURRENT CANDIDATES REMAINING: 236 / 500]
Julius folded his hands behind his back, looking out over his subterranean domain with a faint, untroubled smile.
"Maintain passive radar, Raymond," Julius said calmly. "Keep the hydroponic yields high, and make sure the crew gets prime rib for dinner tonight. We have a lot of time left, and I intend to enjoy every single second of it."
