Chapter 1091: Chapter 33: Story Development (Part 3)
In the Alchemy Room, only Mr. Neil was left alone. This elderly gentleman, with his hair as white as snow and deep wrinkles, was tidying up his things while appearing deep in thought, his brows tightly furrowed.
"Godly descent..."
The murmur of self-talk echoed in the dimly lit space.
...
...
With Captain Dunn’s help, Klein quickly mastered the on-off function of Spiritual Vision, although he wasn’t very proficient yet.
Since he had just become an Extraordinary, the Spiritual Vision also consumed a great deal of his spirituality. Captain Dunn allowed him to rest for a bit... Having just started work in the morning, and not even half an hour in, he could already clock out. It was fair to say the working conditions with the Night Watcher Squad were pretty good, though — benefits were proportionate to risks.
Klein did not refuse. Even though he was somewhat groggy, he insisted on asking a few questions, including what Mr. Neil had said and the situation of Shire Hat Shop across the street. As expected, he received affirmative answers, which completely relaxed his last nerve... leading him to barely hold back his drowsiness upon exiting the Blackthorn Security Company.
Until—
"Mr. Klein?"
"Mr. Klein!!"
The repeated calls jolted the future Master Fool awake from his stupor.
He blearily and confusedly glanced around, and the decorations of the hat shop came into view.
Young and already owning an independent store, he was considered an ambitious and successful young man in the eyes of many women in the surrounding neighborhood. Mr. Shire stood before him, looking down with a frown... Wait, what? How did he end up sleeping here? Klein was a bit baffled, his muddled brain unable to comprehend.
"Are you alright? You just fell asleep mid-conversation..."
Seeing him awake, Mr. Shire had a strange expression but still kindly offered the most suitable suggestion: "Your spirituality consumption is a bit too much. I recommend you go home and take a nap immediately."
Ah, that’s right, he had passed out right after coming over to greet him!
Listening to Shire’s words awakened some of Klein’s hazy memories. Before he "blacked out," he recalled verifying with Captain Dunn that Mr. Shire indeed had a record for running the hat shop across the corner.
The official attitude toward wild Extraordinaries wasn’t to eradicate them completely; the response was flexible and adaptive. Mr. Shire was a healthy one, willing to accept supervision, and even cooperated with the local Night Watcher Squad in Tingen... The crucial point was his pathway being very valuable, belonging to Sequence 7 of the Generalist pathway, "Appraiser."
He could quickly appraise magical items without Divination.
He could intuitively grasp the abilities and problems of most Extraordinary items and use them while avoiding danger as much as possible.
This naturally was a very helpful ability. Mr. Shire sought protection, and the Night Watcher Squad also needed his ability, so they hit it off and cooperated for several years. In a sense, he was almost half a member of the Night Watcher Squad, with a deeper credential than Klein’s.
After giving such an answer, Captain Dunn also suggested Klein might want to get to know him again; this would greatly aid his future career... After all, the Night Watchers were bound to deal with all sorts of extraordinary items, so establishing a good relationship with an "Appraiser" was self-evident in its significance.
Klein wholeheartedly agreed; he also felt it necessary to reacquaint himself with Shire, both to explain his prior abruptness and to seize the opportunity to further negotiate regarding Roselle’s Diary.
Maybe his new identity would be more convincing, perhaps Mr. Shire would believe him after all.
Embracing the mindset of "give it a try, no loss if I fail, but a great gain if I succeed," Klein didn’t hail a ride home immediately but instead persisted in going to the hat shop... Unfortunately, he overestimated himself and underestimated the spirituality he had just expended. After greeting, he hardly said a few sentences before he could no longer hold on, and his mind became blurry amid the gradually fuzzy vision.
The Master Fool, having successfully recalled everything, was embarrassed to the point of wanting to find a hole to hide in, immensely regretting it.
If only he had decided to come another day!
Simultaneously, as the Master of the Washroom bemoaned his plight, Mr. Shire had a somewhat subtle expression. He scanned Klein from top to bottom, pondering what made Klein so special that he was so highly favored by his Lord.
Could it be the ability to decipher the words in his father’s diary?
It shouldn’t be; his Lord was already well-versed in those words... In any case, Shire could only think of this but found it insufficiently reasoned.
—Someone ultimately still held something back, concealing the secret about the Transmigrator part in Roselle’s Diary... Of course, other socially deadly parts remained unembellished.
Lightly shaking his head, Shire reeled in his scattered thoughts. Seeing Klein’s frustration, he began contemplating how to naturally and unassumingly invite Klein to join the Secret Ceremony Society in the next stage... It seemed it wouldn’t be difficult, especially since young Klein seemed to clearly want to get on good terms with him.
