I Can See Evolution Paths
Chapter 349: The Five Streams
The golden heart pulsed again, and the corrupted roots rose around Ronin like a crown of twisted branches. Arthur remained beside Vedas, watching the dark veins spread across the chamber while trying to trace their path back to their source.
They had discovered how Ronin maintained his connection to the World Tree, but knowing what needed to be severed was different from knowing how to do it.
"Arthur, look behind the heart," Athena called. "Not at Ronin. Look at the light."
Arthur followed her gaze. Five streams of energy extended from the enormous golden core, each flowing through a different section of the chamber before disappearing into the surrounding roots.
They had been visible during their earlier exchanges, but the violent movements of the battlefield had made it difficult to distinguish them from the rest of the Tree’s energy. Now that Ronin had briefly drawn his power inward, their separate paths had become clearer.
One stream burned with a warm, reddish glow, another carried the deep blue of moving water, and a third shimmered with earthy gold. The fourth was almost black, with faint purple edges where the corruption had touched it, while the final stream shone with a pure golden light that resembled the heart itself.
Arthur’s eyes widened as he recognized the pattern. "The five Mirrors."
Luna turned toward him, then looked back at the streams. "You’re right. Fire, Water, Earth, Darkness, and Light. They’re all connected to the heart, just like the records described."
Sun glanced from one stream to another while keeping Long raised against a nearby root. "I thought we had already dealt with the Mirrors. We went through all five regions, survived the trials, and nearly got buried under the Everglades. You’re telling me there’s another part of the test?"
"I don’t think this is a test," Luna replied. "My grandfather’s records described the Mirrors as part of a larger structure. When each Mirror awakened, its corresponding region changed, and the five regions formed a pattern around the center. The records never said the Mirrors were independent objects. They were parts of the same network."
Athena stepped closer to the edge of the heart’s platform, studying the way the streams entered the golden surface. Her shield remained raised, and she occasionally shifted her position whenever a root moved too close. "That would explain why the barriers reacted together when the five Mirrors were reunited. They were never designed to operate separately. Each one regulates a different part of the World Tree’s connection to the Secret Realm."
"Then why were the Mirrors scattered across five regions?" Mithra asked, cutting through a root that had started curling around her leg. "Wouldn’t it have been safer to keep them together?"
"Not necessarily," Athena answered. "If each Mirror regulates a different part of the network, separating them may have allowed the system to remain stable even when one region was disturbed. Think of them as five points supporting the same structure. If one fails, the others may keep the entire system from collapsing."
Luna nodded, her expression growing more serious as the pieces came together. "The ancient civilization wasn’t using the Mirrors to imprison the World Tree. They were protecting its connection to the Secret Realm, making sure the power could circulate without overwhelming the land. The barriers were a stabilization network."
Arthur looked toward the dark veins spreading across the heart. "And Ronin is forcing that network to carry the corruption."
"Exactly," Athena said. "His artificial core is drawing power through the Tree and forcing it into his body. If we can use the five Mirrors to isolate the corrupted connection, we may be able to separate him without destroying the heart."
Kong grinned, rolling his shoulders as crimson light flickered across his arms. "So we turn off the bad parts and leave the good parts alone. I understand that."
"That’s a surprisingly good explanation," Sun admitted.
"I understand complicated things too," Kong replied, looking pleased with himself. "I just prefer punching them."
"Please don’t punch any of the five streams," Sun said. "I’m begging you to remember that one rule."
Arthur studied the five paths again. The idea made sense, but the streams were not stationary lines that they could simply cut with their weapons.
They carried energy into and out of the heart, and their movement changed whenever Ronin exerted his control. If the group attacked them carelessly, they might damage the network they were trying to use.
"We need to test one stream," Arthur said. "Not destroy it, just interrupt its connection long enough to see whether Ronin loses control."
"Which one?" Vedas asked.
Arthur looked at the streams, then toward the dark veins running through Ronin’s body. "The Darkness stream. It’s already showing signs of corruption, so it may be easier to affect. But we need to wait until the other streams are stable, or the disturbance might spread."
Luna frowned. "The Darkness Mirror was the last one we awakened before the World Tree appeared. If the corruption has entered that stream, it could be carrying more of Ronin’s influence than the others."
"Which makes it dangerous," Athena added, "but also gives us a way to test whether the network can separate his power from the Tree’s natural circulation."
Eden floated closer, golden particles gathering around her hands as she watched the streams. "I can help. The timing is different whenever Ronin forces the roots to move. If we wait for the moment when his power and the Tree fall out of sync, we might be able to interrupt the connection without putting as much pressure on the heart."
Arthur smiled at her. "Good. Watch the Darkness stream and tell us when you see that gap. Everyone else, we need to protect the other four streams while we test it."
Ronin had been listening in silence, but his expression changed when Arthur gave the instructions. The roots around him stopped moving for a moment, and the purple light beneath his skin brightened.
"So you’ve discovered the purpose of the Mirrors," he said. "I wondered how long it would take you to understand what the ancient civilization left behind."
He raised both arms, and the chamber shook as enormous roots tore themselves from the walls. Several surged toward the five streams, not to attack the group directly but to wrap around the glowing paths and crush them against the surrounding stone.
"He’s going after the connections!" Athy shouted from above.
Her clones scattered through the chamber, their golden wings flashing as they intercepted the smaller tendrils. Athy herself swept downward and released a slash of concentrated light, cutting through a root just before it could strike the Water stream. The severed section crashed to the floor, but another immediately rose to take its place.
"Athy, keep watching the streams!" Athena called, lifting Aegis to block a second root. "Don’t waste your attacks on every branch. Tell us which ones are closest to reaching the connections!"
"I can do both," Athy replied, sounding slightly offended that anyone might doubt her ability. Her clones spread into different positions, giving her a clear view of the chamber, and she began calling out the approaching threats before they reached their targets.
Mithra flashed across the floor toward the Earth stream, her Dawn Sovereign cutting through a pair of roots that had begun to coil around its base. Melo followed her, spreading dream mist through the surrounding area until false versions of the glowing stream appeared in several directions. The roots lunged toward the illusions, striking empty air while Mithra used the opening to clear the real connection.
"Your illusions are working," Mithra called.
"Of course they are," Melo replied, her five tails sweeping behind her as she redirected the mist. "I’d be worried if a collection of angry roots could see through them."
"Don’t get too confident. They’re already changing direction."
Melo’s ears tilted forward as she watched the roots hesitate, then turn toward the real stream. "I noticed. The Tree isn’t the only thing resisting Ronin. He’s forcing the roots to adapt, so we’ll need to keep changing the illusions."
At the opposite side of the chamber, Sun and Kong defended the Fire stream. Kong caught a thick root in both hands and dragged it away from the glowing path, his crimson markings burning brighter as he resisted its attempt to pull him off his feet. Sun struck the ground with Long, releasing a controlled shockwave that disrupted the smaller roots without damaging the surrounding stone.
"Keep it there!" Sun shouted.
"I’m trying!" Kong grunted as the root twisted in his grasp. "This thing is stronger than it looks!"
"Then stop trying to pull it apart and use its own movement against it!"
Kong looked at the root, then at the ground beneath his feet. He shifted his stance and let the root’s next surge carry it sideways before turning with the movement, throwing it away from the Fire stream instead of fighting against its full strength.
Sun blinked. "That was actually smart."
Kong grinned. "I’m full of good ideas."
"Please don’t start listing them now!"
Vedas moved toward the Darkness stream with Arthur, his golden spear held ready as Ronin stepped forward to intercept them. The older man swept one hand across the chamber, and a wall of corrupted roots erupted between them.
Vedas drove King Maker into the ground, its runes igniting one after another as a golden barrier spread outward to protect the nearest allies.
The roots slammed against the barrier, making the golden light ripple under the pressure. Vedas braced himself, his armor shining as he poured more strength into the defense, while Arthur used the few seconds he had gained to approach the Darkness stream.
"Arthur, don’t go too far!" Vedas called. "He’s watching you."
"I know. Keep him occupied."
"You say that as though he isn’t actively trying to tear this chamber apart."
"You’re doing a great job keeping him busy."
Vedas gave a quiet, incredulous laugh before turning back toward Ronin. "You really are impossible."
Ronin’s next attack struck the barrier with enough force to send cracks of light across its surface. Vedas held his ground, but the pressure forced him to one knee, and the golden spear trembled beneath his grip.
Arthur wanted to turn back, but Eden’s voice reached him before he could move.
"Now! The Darkness stream is out of sync!"
He looked toward the connection. For a brief instant, the purple energy traveling through the dark stream surged ahead of the golden light, leaving a narrow gap between the two. Ronin’s control faltered, and the roots around Vedas loosened as the barrier steadied.
"Do it!" Athena shouted.
Arthur thrust Dusk toward the point where the Darkness stream entered the surrounding roots. He did not strike the glowing path itself. Instead, he released a controlled burst of golden mana against the corrupted connection wrapped around it, using the force to push the purple energy away from the stream.
The Darkness stream flickered.
Ronin staggered.
The change lasted only a moment, but everyone saw it. The dark veins across Ronin’s body dimmed, the roots around him stopped moving, and the artificial core inside his chest pulsed unevenly as the connection faltered.
For the first time since the battle began, Ronin’s body failed to recover immediately from the damage Vedas had inflicted.
Vedas rose from his knee and drove King Maker forward, forcing Ronin back before the older man could regain his footing. Arthur withdrew Dusk and watched the Darkness stream closely, his heart racing as the golden light began to stabilize.
"It worked," Eden said, staring at Ronin with wide eyes. "We actually interrupted the connection!"
Athena’s expression brightened, although she did not lower Aegis. "Only briefly, but that is enough to prove the network can affect his control. If all five Mirrors work together, we may be able to isolate the corruption without damaging the heart."
Luna looked toward the five streams, relief mixing with worry as the Darkness stream returned to its previous state. "Then the ancient system can still function. We just need to reactivate it properly."
Ronin straightened, and the roots immediately surged back into motion as the purple veins brightened once more. His wounds began to close, and the pressure in the chamber returned, but his expression had lost its earlier amusement.
"You think a moment of weakness means you’ve found a way to defeat me?" he asked.
Arthur raised Dusk, keeping his attention on the five streams rather than the man standing before him. "No. It means we finally know what we need to do."
Behind Ronin, the golden heart pulsed as the five streams continued flowing through it. The group had not severed the connection, and the corruption remained, but they had discovered something far more important than another way to injure their enemy.
The five Mirrors could weaken Ronin’s control. If they could make them work together, they might finally separate him from the World Tree.
