I Can See Evolution Paths

Chapter 343: The Evolution

  • Next Chapter

The World Tree stopped. Arthur noticed it before anyone else. One moment the enormous branches around them were moving with the constant rhythm of a living ecosystem, mana flowing through the rivers, leaves swaying in the wind, distant Beasts moving through the forests.

Then everything changed.

A golden leaf detached from a branch and began falling, then stopped, suspended in the air several meters above the ground, completely motionless.

Arthur stared at it. "What..."

Athy looked around. "Did the wind stop?"

"No," Athena said quietly, pointing toward the waterfall in the distance. The water wasn’t falling anymore. It had frozen mid-descent, every droplet suspended in the air.

Sun slowly raised his staff. "That’s not normal."

"I was going to say that," Kong said, looking at the frozen waterfall.

Melo’s five tails had gone completely still. "This isn’t the same as before."

"What do you mean?" Mithra asked.

Melo narrowed her eyes. "The Tree isn’t stopping." She pointed toward a branch several hundred meters away. "Look."

Everyone turned. The branch was moving, but differently from everything around it. The bark suddenly darkened, and cracks spread across its surface as the leaves withered, entire sections aging as though hundreds of years were passing every second. Then, just as quickly, it returned to normal, the leaves green again, the bark repaired, the cracks gone.

"Did that branch just..." Sun stared.

"Age," Athena finished.

"Why?" Luna asked, looking toward Eden.

Nobody answered, because Eden was no longer beside Arthur. She was floating several meters above them.

"Eden?" Arthur looked up. She didn’t respond. Her eyes were closed, and golden light surrounded her body, and Arthur understood immediately. "Eden."

Her eyes opened, and the entire World Tree went silent as the light around her intensified. Her small wings changed first, the delicate wings of a Time Fairy stretching outward, growing larger and more intricate, thousands of tiny patterns spreading across their surface like overlapping clockwork and flowing streams of light. Then another pair appeared, and another, not separate wings but layers of temporal energy unfolding behind her.

Golden rings formed around her body, one, two, ten, then dozens, each rotating at a different speed. Some moved forward, others moved backward, and a few seemed to remain completely still.

"Eden..." Arthur stared.

Her body itself began changing. She didn’t grow much larger, but something fundamental about her presence had shifted. The little fairy who had once floated around Arthur’s shoulder now seemed connected to the entire space around them, and Time itself moved differently near her. Arthur could see it: a single leaf passed through one of the golden rings and suddenly turned ancient before returning to its original state, while a drop of water entered another ring, remained suspended, then continued falling.

Eden slowly raised her hand, and the entire environment responded. The golden rings expanded, and the World Tree trembled, but this time it wasn’t resisting.

Arthur’s eyes widened. "It recognizes her."

"What?" Luna asked.

"The Tree." He pointed toward the roots. "They’re not attacking." The roots that had been threatening them moments earlier had gone completely still, some even glowing, golden light flowing from them toward Eden.

"The Tree is giving her something," Vedas said, staring upward.

"No," Melo said. Everyone looked at her, and her expression had turned unusually serious as she watched the roots carefully. "Not giving. It’s recognizing her."

Eden’s body rose higher, and the light grew brighter. Then the familiar notification appeared.

[Evolution Requirement Met.]

Arthur’s eyes widened. A second notification followed beneath it.

[Time Fairy → Chrono Fairy]

For several seconds, nobody moved. Then Sun’s jaw dropped. "She evolved."

"Finally!" Kong grinned.

"Eden!" Athy smiled brightly.

Vedas crossed his arms, obvious pride in his expression. "About time."

"You say that like she was late," Arthur said, looking at him.

Vedas shrugged. "She kept looking into the future without understanding it." He looked upward. "Now she finally does."

"That’s actually a good way to put it," Mithra smiled.

The transformation continued. The golden rings surrounding Eden expanded outward, and one passed through Arthur. He felt something strange, several sensations at once: the present, then the moment before it, then the moment after. Not memories, not visions. Something else. Possibilities.

Arthur pulled his hand back quickly. "What was that?"

"I don’t know," Eden said, looking at him, then at her own hands. "But I can feel it."

"What?"

"Time." The answer was simple, but the way she said it made everyone go quiet.

She looked toward the frozen leaf and raised one finger. It began moving, fell, then suddenly moved upward, then froze again. She lowered her hand, and it returned to its original position.

"You’re controlling it?" Arthur stared.

"Not exactly." She looked confused. "I don’t think I’m controlling time."

"Then what are you doing?"

She thought for a moment. "I’m choosing how it moves."

Athena’s eyes widened. "That’s different."

Eden nodded. "I can see the different states." She looked toward the waterfall. "I can let it continue." The water began falling. "I can stop it." The waterfall froze. "I can make it return." The water rose. She lowered her hand, and it returned to normal. "But I can’t do everything. Not yet."

"That’s fine," Arthur smiled.

"Why?"

"Because if you could do everything immediately, we’d have a problem."

"Absolutely," Sun nodded.

Kong looked confused. "Why?"

Sun pointed toward Eden. "Because then we’d never get to do anything."

Kong thought about it. "That’s true."

Melo rolled her eyes. "You two are surprisingly self-aware." Athy laughed, and Eden smiled, looking completely comfortable for the first time since her transformation began.

Then the World Tree responded. Every golden ring around Eden expanded at once, and the forests moved with it. Leaves fell, some aging, some returning to their branches, some remaining suspended in the air. The mana waterfalls ran backward, then forward, then slowed, and the entire upper ecosystem seemed to exist in several moments at once.

Arthur watched, amazed. "This is..." He couldn’t find the right word.

"Beautiful," Luna finished for him.

"Yeah."

Even Athena had stopped taking notes. She simply stared. "The World Tree contains countless temporal states," she said quietly. "It isn’t only preserving life. It’s preserving moments."

"That would explain the memories," Melo said, looking around.

"You think the Tree remembers through Time?" Arthur turned toward her.

"I think it’s more complicated than that." Her expression turned thoughtful. "Maybe the Tree doesn’t remember the past the way we do." She looked at Eden. "Maybe every moment is still somewhere inside it."

Eden’s eyes widened. "I can feel them."

"What?" Arthur asked.

"All of them." She closed her eyes. "I can feel moments that happened long ago." She opened them again. "And moments that haven’t happened yet."

"Does that mean you can see the future again?" Luna stepped closer.

Eden shook her head. "Not the way I used to." She smiled. "I don’t see one future." She looked at the countless golden rings around her. "I see paths."

"And now you understand them," Arthur said.

"Yes."

A sudden tremor shook the World Tree, and the golden light around Eden flickered. "What happened?" Arthur asked, his expression turning serious.

Eden looked upward, her expression changing. "Ronin."

The others stiffened. "You can sense him?"

She nodded. "He’s moving."

"How close?"

She closed her eyes. For a moment, nothing happened. Then her expression turned serious. "Very."

"Can you tell where?" Vedas stepped forward.

She pointed upward. "He’s approaching the heart."

Arthur looked toward the enormous branches above them, and the peaceful atmosphere vanished. They had spent enough time admiring Eden’s evolution. Ronin was still climbing, and the closer he came to the heart, the more unstable the World Tree became.

"Can you help us reach him?" Arthur asked.

Eden looked toward the path ahead. "Yes." She raised her hand, and a golden ring appeared several meters in front of them. Unlike the previous rings, this one didn’t simply rotate. It opened. Beyond it was the same ancient road they had been traveling, but farther ahead. Much farther.

"You just shortened the distance," Arthur stared.

She shook her head. "No." She smiled. "I moved us through the time of the road."

Everyone stared at her. "That sounds complicated," Sun said, lowering his staff slowly.

"It is."

"I like it," Kong grinned.

"Of course you do," Melo sighed.

Arthur stepped toward the ring and looked back at Eden before entering. "You ready?"

She smiled. "For the first time."

"Then let’s go." Vedas walked beside him, and Star bounced onto Arthur’s shoulder as Luna followed. Mithra, Sun, Athena, Athy, Kong, and Melo moved together behind them, with Eden remaining in the center, her new wings unfolded and the golden rings around her rotating steadily.

For the first time, the World Tree did not simply allow her to move through its interior. It opened a path for her.

Arthur looked ahead. The path toward the heart had just become shorter, but somewhere beyond it, Ronin was waiting. And now Eden had finally learned the first lesson of Time. It wasn’t about seeing what would happen. It was about understanding that every moment contained a choice.
