"Kill him!" ordered the General of the Yin Demons.
ROAR ROAR ROAR!
The surrounding Yin Demons roared, hefting their Bone Blades and Bone Spears as they swarmed Li Mubai. Seeing the impenetrable Yin Demon Army closing in, it was clear there was no way out. Yet, Li Mubai felt no fear.
"Hehe... I never planned on surviving when I showed up here. My mission is already complete, so I have nothing to fear. The sooner I die, the sooner I reincarnate! If I die now, I might even make it back in time for the next battle after reviving!" Li Mubai said. "I just hope the other players aren’t too fierce and wipe all of you out before I get another chance to kill some enemies." He remained remarkably calm.
For this event, players enjoyed a special perk: the death penalty during the war was drastically reduced. The revival cooldown was now a mere three hours. This was a special setting Su Tan and the Fat Monk had implemented after studying the Yin Demon Army. Altering the player revival parameters wasn’t difficult; it just required expending more energy.
The Ten Thousand Races Alliance was facing an army of two hundred thousand—double the total number of the Ten Thousand Races’ members. If they continued using the original revival settings, they could save a lot of energy, but it would be highly detrimental to the war effort and might even lead to the Alliance’s defeat. Therefore, Su Tan had no choice but to expend extra energy to allow players to revive quickly and plunge back into the second wave of the battle.
It was just a bit more energy. It didn’t matter. The cost would be recouped from the source, after all—the Yin Demons killed by the players would perfectly compensate for the energy expenditure. By slightly tweaking the settings, Su Tan ensured that players would no longer worry about their revival cooldowns, allowing them to throw themselves into the fray with even greater heroism. It was a win-win on multiple fronts.
STAB STAB STAB!
A dense barrage of Bone Spears and Bone Blades thrust at Li Mubai. To the Yin Demons’ surprise, Li Mubai completely abandoned all defense. In his dying moments, he drove his twin swords through the thicket of bone weapons, wounding several Yin Demon soldiers.
"DING. Personal Damage +53..."
Li Mubai’s eyes lit up. Even as he was stabbed full of holes like a sieve, a trace of excitement washed over his face. "Haha... Dealing fifty-three points of damage right before I die makes this even more worth it!"
Madness... This absolute madness made the Yin Demons frown in disbelief.
SHLUCK SHLUCK!
The Bone Spears and Bone Blades were yanked out. Blood spurted wildly, staining the white bones red for three feet around. Li Mubai died on the spot, entering his revival countdown.
"Great Inheritor, your courage and wisdom are the most incredible Qing has ever seen! As expected of you! You’re truly amazing, the hero Qing admires most," Qing sweetly flattered, making Li Mubai even more smug.
Li Mubai mused internally, "I also think my strategy was brilliant. I think I’m incredibly fierce, too... After all these years, only Qing truly understands me. If only she were a real person. How wonderful that would be..."
Li Mubai passed away with a smile on his face.
On the Yin Demons’ side, although they had killed the invading human, they couldn’t muster a smile. They weren’t happy at all. In their eyes, this human acted like a complete lunatic with a broken brain. His ambush had been utterly useless. Yet, he had still foolishly rushed in to throw his life away. If there wasn’t something wrong with his head, what else could it be? The Yin Demons simply couldn’t comprehend such idiotic behavior.
However... Li Mubai’s fearless, death-defying attitude made their hearts sink. An unprovoked sense of dread swelled within them. This man was simply too ferocious.
"Didn’t the Grand General say that according to historical records, the Ten Thousand Races are the most useless and cowardly creatures? Especially the Human Race. They are greedy, fearful, terrified of death, and selfish... Supposedly, they just shiver in fear upon seeing the great beings of the Holy Race, lacking even the courage to lift their weapons," a Yin Demon soldier questioned. "Why is this human so different from the legends?"
"Perhaps he’s just an extreme outlier among humans. Every race has anomalies, and the Human Race is no different. He might just be a freak among them, a powerhouse, the only fearless one in a crowd of cowards..." another Yin Demon guessed.
"That makes sense."
The Human Race was bound to have a few tough characters. A few anomalies.
"There is no need to panic!" an officer shouted. "The Ten Thousand Races are nothing but low-born, weak creatures—despicable and pathetic. This human probably just snapped and did something irrational. Not all of them are this fierce. Raise your weapons and march forward! Let the Ten Thousand Races submit to the great power of the Holy Race! Make everyone who sees a member of our Holy Race uncontrollably fall to their knees!"
"ROAR ROAR ROAR!"
The Yin Demons were instantly rallied.
SWISH SWISH SWISH!
CRASH CRASH CRASH!
CRACK CRACK CRACK!
But right at that moment, another sudden change occurred. Just a few dozen feet away, layers of white bones were overturned. Broken bone fragments flew wildly through the air! Humans clad in camouflage suits leaped out of the piles of skeletal remains. Like a horde of devils crawling from a graveyard of bones, they looked incredibly eerie amidst the faint black mist.
"What the hell is this now?" a soldier in the Yin Demon Army asked.
"Kill!"
Battle cries erupted in waves.
"Brothers, slaughter them!"
"That bastard Li Mubai had way too much luck! Why did the Yin Demon Army enter his ambush range first?"
"Fuck this..."
"I’m done hiding! Hawk Squad, all out attack! First Blood is already gone anyway, so we need to change our strategy. Let’s just fight, kill as many Yin Demons as we can, or at least deal some damage—and try to die as early as possible!" A burly, half-naked man roared, swinging a massive hammer as he lunged at the Yin Demon Army.
The man’s hammer was comically huge—the head alone was larger than his entire body. Yet, as he swung it, he looked like a descending War God. Majestic. Menacing.
Their original plan had been identical to Li Mubai’s: lie in ambush and snag First Blood. But who could have guessed that the Yin Demons’ marching route would deviate by several dozen meters, letting Li Mubai get all the glory for free? The man was deeply frustrated at losing out on First Blood. If they didn’t strike now, they would be discovered by the Yin Demon Army soon anyway. It was better to strike first and vent all their pent-up frustration on the demons.
BANG BANG BANG!
The moment he clashed with the Yin Demon Army, the burly man’s hammer smashed viciously into them. Bone weapons and Yin Demon corpses shattered alike. He fought with the unstoppable courage of a man facing ten thousand.
"Try to... die early?"
"???"
What kind of nonsense was that? Were those even human words?
Striving to die as early as possible! Did someone really need to try to die? Were they actually hoping to die first?
The Yin Demons wondered what kind of logical freaks these humans were. Weren’t humans supposed to be terrified of death? Weren’t they supposed to go weak in the knees the moment they saw the Holy Race?
This was completely different from what they had imagined! Each and every one of these humans was scrambling to die first, acting as if they were terrified of missing their spot in the reincarnation line.
"Great warriors of the Holy Race, take up your weapons and slaughter these ants!" Yin Bone Profound, General of the Yin Demons, issued another order from the rear.
Yin Bone Profound hadn’t expected this either. To think humans would actually dare to ambush them! He had genuinely believed that upon seeing the Yin Demon Army advancing, the Ten Thousand Races Alliance would be so terrified they wouldn’t even be able to hold their weapons steadily, immediately falling to their knees to beg for mercy.
This was quite a departure from his expectations. He had just finished saying how cowardly humans were, and look at this—every single one of them was charging forward without the slightest fear of death. What a slap in the face. Did humans nowadays really care so little for their own lives?
BANG BANG BANG!
"Fuck their mothers! Brothers, don’t hold back! Bring out your strongest combat power and hit them hard! Expend all your energy before you die; don’t waste a single drop!" the foul-mouthed Hawk Captain roared, laying out their tactics.
SHLUCK SHLUCK!
Just like Li Mubai, he didn’t waste any energy on defense. As long as the injury wasn’t instantly fatal, he didn’t give a damn whether a Bone Blade sliced his flesh or a cold spear drew his blood. He knew defense was useless anyway. There were simply too many Yin Demons. They weren’t going to survive this. It was better to deal a bit more damage and kill a few more Yin Demons. After all, the event didn’t reward survival rates; it was all about the Kill Leaderboard and the Damage Leaderboard.
A life for a life.
The muscular Hawk Captain unleashed scalp-numbing, terrifying damage. With a single swing of his hammer, he could crush two or three Yin Demon soldiers. Even as the Yin Demons gouged and slashed his body in return, he remained utterly fearless. He pressed forward relentlessly. He was terrifyingly ferocious.
The Yin Demons thought, "Are we the demons here, or are you?"
"Didn’t manage to die again, and I hammered two more Yin Demon soldiers to death! Not a loss! In fact, it’s highly profitable!" the muscular man laughed aloud, making wide, sweeping strikes through the Yin Demon Army.
He looked at death as if it were a homecoming! There wasn’t a shred of fear of death in his eyes as he charged back into the fray. And it wasn’t just him; the other human warriors were exactly the same.
The Yin Demons were thoroughly dumbfounded. Every single human was incredibly fierce.
"These ants... are they crazy? Are they truly not afraid of death at all?!"
Could these be anomalies among humans too? Fearless anomalies? If so, then the Human Race had way too many anomalies!
"Liu Rushi killed Yin Demon +1, +2, +1..."
"Liu Rushi Damage +361, +65, +98..."
The Hawk Captain frantically courted death amidst the Yin Demon Army, yet he just wouldn’t die. His kill count and damage values soared wildly.
Afraid of death? Ha...
That didn’t exist. If they couldn’t even truly die, what was there to fear?
"These ants are so fierce!"
