Chapter 644: The Third Judgment ( PS Bonus Chapter )
A crack about thirty meters away opened wider with a terrible sound.
The rocky ground around it broke, and several trees fell downward along with their huge roots, while hot steam rose from the depths.
Rindo prepared his spear.
"We need to go back!"
"Yeah." Lian nodded.
But just as they both turned toward their previous path, another breaking sound came from behind them.
This time, it was much closer.
The ground beneath their return path began to separate, and within a few seconds, the narrow crack they had passed that morning turned into a deep valley.
Huge pieces of rock broke away from the edges.
White roots came out of the soil, and several golden trees fell into the crack along with parts of the ground.
Rindo stared at the path in disbelief.
"Damn it..."
But the disaster was not over yet.
The third shaking began.
This time, the ground was shaking continuously, farther away, a large part of the forest began to sink.
The sound of hundreds of tree trunks breaking spread across the plain, and one of the rocky paths that had been completely intact just moments earlier split in half, with part of it disappearing into the depths.
Lian looked at Rindo.
"Come here."
Two huge black wings opened behind his back.
[Wings of God]
He grabbed Rindo’s arm and lifted off the ground with a single movement.
At that same moment, the rocky ground beneath their feet broke, and several huge pieces fell from the exact place where they had been standing.
With a movement of his wings, he gained altitude and flew toward a higher rock while carrying Rindo.
But when he saw the condition of the area from above, his expression became more serious for a moment.
Oh...
The cracks had not expanded in just one place, new cracks had appeared all across the plain.
Some of them had become several times wider than before, and in some areas, huge pieces of land were separating from each other.
Even paths that had looked completely stable that morning had now disappeared.
Rindo, who was still holding Lian’s arm, looked behind them.
"The way back..."
The young Vorhelm looked in the same direction.
Hundreds of meters of land between them and their previous path had collapsed, hot steam was rising from several huge cracks, and part of the golden forest had disappeared into the red mist.
"Yeah. It doesn’t exist anymore."
His friend remained silent for a moment and then added quietly after a few seconds.
"First, we need to find out how much of the path is still safe."
Lian moved toward a higher position. From there, he could see a larger part of the plain.
But the view was not very hopeful.
Several huge cracks had appeared along the paths leading to the base, and columns of steam blocked parts of their view.
Even with the ability to fly, reaching the base would take time, and considering how the cracks were continuing to spread, it was unclear which areas along their route would remain stable.
He finally landed on a relatively solid rock.
Rindo lowered his spear.
"The situation is much worse than what we saw this morning."
Lian nodded.
"Several times worse."
Then he looked toward the horizon, from far away, the huge golden wall that formed the border of the land could still be seen.
But beneath it, parts of the ground were slowly collapsing, if this continued, sooner or later, nothing would remain of this land.
Rindo took out his communication device.
"We need to report this to Alaric."
"Yeah, report our location first."
But just as Rindo was about to establish communication, something else happened.
The sound of the wind stopped.
The movement of the golden leaves stopped, and even the steam rising from the nearby cracks took on an unnatural shape for a moment.
Lian immediately raised his head.
In the sky, the huge rings of the Hollow Sun were rotating more slowly, the black pupil at their center remained still for a moment.
Then it slowly began to rotate.
Around the rock, several Withered that had been moving toward the center until then stopped.
One fell to its knees.
Another hid its head between its hands.
And a creature with long limbs began whispering in a shaking voice while looking at the sky.
"No... no..."
He narrowed his eyes.
It’s time.
He activated [True Sequence].
In the different layers of the air, very faint lines of golden light had appeared.
The same flows he had seen before the Second Judgment.
The identification stage.
Rindo also noticed the changes and took the Ten Star Spear in his hands.
"Lian... is it time?"
"Yeah." Vorhelm stared at the black pupil for a moment.
And then, the huge, emotionless voice of the Hollow Sun spread across the entire land.
"The Third Judgment has begun."
The golden rings began rotating, the sunlight became stronger for a moment, and the black pupil, which had been moving over the central parts of the land until then, turned in another direction.
Lian followed the direction of its gaze.
The pupil moved across the cracked plains and finally stopped in the direction of the central base.
He frowned for a moment.
The base?
At that moment, his and Rindo’s communication devices activated almost at the same time, and Alaric’s voice could be heard through the static.
"Vorhelm! Rindo! Can you hear me?"
"Loud and clear, what’s happening?" Lian immediately answered.
"Report your situation first, the ground here is collapsing from several directions, where are you?"
Rindo reported their approximate location.
"We’re near the southwestern route to the center, but a large part of the way back has been destroyed."
There was silence for a few moments, and then the commander’s voice was heard again.
"The situation here has gotten much worse too, we’ve lost several positions and had to pull back the forces from the southern section."
Lian looked at the cracks around them.
"It’s the same here, the cracks have become several times larger."
Alaric paused for a moment.
"Don’t try to return through the same route for now, we need to find out which areas are still stable first."
Rindo looked at the sky.
"Commander, the Third Judgment has started."
"I know."
Alaric’s voice became weaker for a moment.
"We’ve kept the forces in the remaining positions, we still don’t know who the sun intends to—"
At that exact moment, a shout came from the communication device.
"Commander! Golden light!"
Lian fixed his gaze on the sky.
The black pupil was still pointing toward the base.
The commander’s voice was heard again.
"Damn it..."
"Commander? What happened?" Rindo tightened his grip on his spear.
For several seconds, only the sound of static could be heard, and then Alaric answered in a louder voice.
"Lian, several people here have been selected!"
"How many?" Lian narrowed his eyes, and a deep frown appeared on his face.
Alaric began to answer.
"Three... no, wait, there’s another one—"
CRAAAACK!
A terrible sound came through the communication device, and suddenly communication Disconnected
Lian looked at the communication device for a moment, Rindo immediately tried to call again, but received no answer.
Only a faint sound of static could be heard from the device.
Vorhelm slowly raised his head, far away, the golden rings of the Hollow Sun were still rotating.
And the black pupil was still staring in the same direction.
"Commander...?" Rindo whispered quietly.
Lian glanced at him but said nothing and only tightened his fingers around the communication device.
Fuck ....
