A strange pressure settled over the chamber.

Ethan remained motionless.

The ancient being had spoken.

And somehow, it knew the name of the artisan-king.

Before he could respond, the system issued another warning.

[Unknown Consciousness Attempting Direct Communication.]

[Spiritual Interference Increasing.]

[Recommended Action: Withdraw.]

Ethan made his decision.

He seized Serath by the collar and pulled him upright.

"We’re leaving."

Serath looked toward the shaft.

"But the foundation..."

"Will remain intact long enough for us to find another way."

"You cannot simply abandon..."

Ethan’s gaze turned icy.

"Would you prefer I leave you here to explain your mistakes to whatever is waking up?"

Serath fell silent.

Ethan dragged him toward the passage.

The damaged corridor remained partially open.

He raised his hand and used his cultivation to clear the fallen stones.

A path appeared.

He stepped through, keeping Serath restrained beneath an invisible layer of spiritual pressure.

Behind them, the underground chamber gradually fell silent.

The six crystals continued glowing.

The seventh remained empty.

But deep beneath the platform, the ancient presence had not returned to sleep.

It was listening.

And for the first time in centuries, it had spoken.

By the time Ethan emerged from the lower archives, the keep was in an uproar.

The tremors had been felt throughout Starfall.

Several windows in the eastern district had shattered. Cracks appeared along the foundations of older buildings, and frightened citizens had gathered in the streets, demanding explanations.

Fortunately, the damage was limited.

No buildings had collapsed.

But the disturbance had been enough to alarm the entire city.

Lysander met Ethan near the archive entrance.

He stopped when he saw Serath.

"You brought him back alive."

"He has information we need."

Lysander examined the captive.

"Then I hope he has plenty to say."

Serath said nothing.

Kaelan and Mira hurried forward.

"Ethan!" Mira exclaimed. "Are you hurt?"

"Nothing serious."

She looked unconvinced.

Kaelan glanced toward the archive stairs.

"Did you stop it?"

"Temporarily."

"Temporarily?"

"The formation has stabilized, but the original problem remains."

Kaelan’s expression darkened.

"What exactly is beneath us?"

Ethan looked toward Serath.

"A living being older than the kingdoms recorded in our histories."

Mira’s face paled.

"And the Heart?"

"Apparently, it’s the key to communicating with it."

Kaelan remained silent for several seconds.

Then he asked, "How much does the order know?"

"Not enough."

Ethan glanced toward the captive.

"And that may be the most dangerous part."

Lysander stepped closer.

"What do we do now?"

Ethan considered the question.

The spring assembly was approaching.

An armed force had been gathering near Black Hollow.

Traitors remained hidden within Starfall.

And beneath the capital rested an ancient lifeform whose awakening could threaten the entire kingdom.

The situation was becoming increasingly complicated.

Yet panic would only make it worse.

"First, secure the underground entrance. No one enters without my permission."

Lysander nodded.

"Done."

"Second, place Serath under guard. I want him alive, conscious, and available for questioning."

The captive gave Ethan a bitter look.

"You cannot imprison the truth."

Ethan glanced at him.

"No. But I can imprison someone who helped murder my soldiers."

Serath fell silent.

Ethan turned toward Kaelan.

"Gather everything we have on Maelius, the Seventh Star, and the First Foundation. Especially records concerning the seventh guardian."

Kaelan nodded.

"And the council?"

"We convene an emergency session tomorrow."

Mira looked troubled.

"What will you tell them?"

"The truth."

"All of it?"

Ethan hesitated.

The Winter Compact required public accountability.

His own promises demanded honesty.

But revealing the existence of an ancient being beneath Starfall could create panic, particularly while the order still had agents operating inside the city.

He considered the consequences.

Then he answered.

"We’ll tell them that we’ve discovered an ancient structure beneath the city, that its condition is unstable, and that we’re investigating the danger."

Kaelan studied him.

"And the creature?"

"Once we know what it is and what it can do, we’ll tell them that too."

Mira nodded slowly.

It was not complete openness.

But it was a beginning.

Lysander glanced toward the windows.

"And the spring assembly?"

Ethan looked at him.

"It proceeds."

Lysander sighed.

"Of course it does."

"We cannot allow the Seventh Star to decide when our kingdom governs itself."

"And if they attack?"

Ethan’s expression became cold.

"Then they will discover that I am considerably less patient with enemies than I am with councilors."

Lysander almost smiled.

For the first time that night, the tension between them eased slightly.

But it did not last.

A soldier hurried into the corridor.

"My lord!"

Ethan turned.

"What is it?"

"The guards at the great hall have reported another disturbance."

Mira stiffened.

"The Heart?"

The soldier nodded.

"Yes, my lady. Its light has changed."

Ethan immediately began walking.

The others followed.

When they reached the great hall, the scholars were gathered at a distance from the pedestal.

The protective glass had been removed.

Maelius’s Heart floated several inches above its resting place.

Its familiar blue-white glow had transformed into a deep golden light.

The seven markings on its surface were now clearly visible.

Six shone steadily.

The seventh flickered.

Ethan approached.

The artifact responded immediately.

A soft pulse spread through the hall.

Then a second.

The surrounding air grew warm.

Kaelan stared at the markings.

"It’s reacting to what happened beneath the city."

Mira stepped forward.

"The seventh point..."

Ethan followed her gaze.

The final marking had begun to change.

Its light was no longer pale like the others.

It had become a deep crimson.

Serath, still restrained between two guards, stared at the artifact.

His expression drained of color.

"No..."

Ethan turned toward him.

"What?"

Serath’s lips trembled.

"That’s not supposed to happen."

The Heart pulsed again.

The crimson marking expanded.

Thin lines spread across the artifact’s surface, forming a pattern that none of the scholars recognized.

Kaelan moved closer.

"Serath, what does that mean?"

The man shook his head.

"The seventh seal should answer in the same light as the others."

"And if it doesn’t?" Ethan asked.

Serath looked toward him.

"Then something else has answered in its place."

A cold silence settled over the hall.

Ethan extended his senses.

The system immediately detected a new concentration of energy within the Heart.

It was different from the six existing signatures.

Different even from the ancient presence beneath the city.

For an instant, he felt something watching him through the artifact.

Then the crimson light vanished.

The Heart settled back onto its pedestal.

The hall became silent.

Ethan stood motionless.

His system had registered the disturbance.

But the resulting information was incomplete.

Only one message remained.

[Warning: Seventh Connection Established.]

[Connection Origin: Unknown.]

[Host Status: Under Observation.]

Ethan stared at the artifact.

The seventh seal had activated.

But he had not completed the covenant.

He had not given permission.

And he had not even touched the Heart.

Somewhere beneath Starfall, the First Witness continued to stir.

Yet another presence had now entered the formation.

Ethan slowly looked toward Serath.

"Tell me something."

The man remained silent.

"When Maelius divided the seven guardians, what happened to the one who opposed him?"

Serath’s face changed.

For several seconds, he seemed unable to speak.

Finally, he whispered, "The seventh guardian betrayed the order."

Kaelan frowned.

"Betrayed it how?"

Serath looked toward the crimson marking.

"He believed the First Witness should never awaken. He tried to destroy the Heart and sever the covenant."

"And what happened to him?" Mira asked.

Serath swallowed.

"According to our oldest records, Maelius killed him."

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

"According to your records?"

Serath slowly nodded.

"Yes."

Ethan looked back at the Heart.

A troubling possibility began to form in his mind.

The seventh guardian had opposed Maelius.

The guardian had supposedly died.

Yet the ancient formation continued waiting for a seventh connection.

And now, after centuries of silence, a crimson light had answered.

Ethan spoke quietly.

"What if he didn’t die?"

Nobody responded.

Outside, thunder rolled across the spring sky.

The Heart pulsed once more.

Far beneath the ancient foundations, the immense heartbeat answered.

And within the deepest chamber of the First Foundation, behind a stone door that had remained sealed since the fall of Maelius’s empire, a crimson inscription slowly began to glow.

A chain moved.

Then another.

Something stirred behind the door.

And in the darkness, a pair of eyes opened.

The First Witness was no longer the only thing awakening beneath Starfall.
