Chapter 506: Chapter 309: Yuwen’s Worry and Rage, Electromagnetic Mystery

At first, Yu Wen Baji was confused, but then a sense of panic began to rise within him.

Watching the two Rank-8 Elemental Demons turn and charge back into the fray, a cold sweat broke out on his scalp.

The same was true for Great Grandmaster Wei Mo and two others, who were currently locked in combat with Rank-8 Elemental Demons on another front. This elderly Great Grandmaster’s hair was already streaked with white, but his voice was full and resonant. He bellowed from a great distance, using a Sound Wave Martial Skill to launch into a tirade.

"Yu Wen Baji, is this what you call foolproof? If they really die in there, I’d like to see you try and withstand the reckoning that follows!"

As soon as he finished, the three Great Grandmasters who served as Guardians suddenly began to fight with desperate ferocity, trying to break through the Elemental Demons’ blockade.

It was clear they hadn’t been using their full strength until now.

Yu Wen Baji swung his Dark Moon Halberd forward even more fiercely, trying to cut down one or two of the enemies before him so he could break through and rescue Feng Hua and the others.

But unfortunately, at their level of power, it was difficult to quickly defeat an opponent even when going all out. The Rank-8 Elemental Demons’ raw strength was considerable, and their fighting style was far less conservative than humans. Furthermore, their regenerative abilities were astonishing, meaning minor injuries had little impact on their combat effectiveness.

Even with two Rank-8 Elemental Demons pulled away, the remaining ones merely shifted from offense to defense, but they were still able to hold the line.

Yu Wen Baji’s face was livid, and he was filled with rage. ’This year’s senior Celestial Pride Class! They’re more trouble than they’re worth, damn them!’

He had been able to forcibly detain these Guardians and make them fight by appealing to the greater good, but that was all predicated on the assumption that Feng Hua and the two hundred-plus prodigies would not be killed.

That was why he had deliberately sent Feng Hua’s group to Matie Road. On one hand, it was to put them in their place and ensure his subsequent plans would work. On the other, it was a more effective way of forcing Wei Mo and the other Guardians to remain.

’That place is easy to defend and hard to assault. Logically, there’s no way Feng Hua and his people should have been able to break through. So what the hell is this?’

In truth, Yu Wen Baji was perfectly aware of the circumstances of Shenhan University’s team of Guardians. After all, he’d had Guardians of his own before he graduated.

This group consisted mostly of Grandmasters and Great Grandmasters from the public sphere whose potential had been exhausted; each of them had their own vulnerabilities.

Some were nearing the end of their lifespans and needed their descendants to be looked after. Others had offended people they couldn’t afford to cross and needed the status afforded by Shenhan University for protection.

Yuwen’s method for persuading them had been simple. First, he invoked wartime regulations to forcibly detain them. Then, he used a combination of veiled threats and promised benefits to convince them to stay.

At the end of the day, these people had become Guardians to seek protection. Yu Wen Baji himself appeared to be an extremely powerful backer with immense potential. He promised to guarantee the Celestial Pride Class’s safety, but in return, he demanded these Guardians contribute their strength. The alternative was to make an enemy of him, Yu Wen Baji.

The thought of making an enemy of a rising star and former Combat Class Leader of Shenhan made these old, dispirited Grandmasters shudder.

Thus, they had reluctantly agreed, which gave them the plausible deniability of having been coerced.

But now, if the two cohorts of the Celestial Pride Class under Feng Hua’s leadership suffered heavy casualties because of Yu Wen Baji’s selfish motives and command errors, he would be ruined, if not killed, in the ensuing investigation. As for the Guardians, they would be guilty of a major dereliction of duty.

’What kind of Guardian can’t even protect their charges?’

As for Yu Wen Baji, he was just one Combat Class Leader. The Seven Greats had no shortage of them. Over the long years, there had been countless individuals more outstanding than him.

Until one became a Martial Saint, one had no right to break the rules. And even a Martial Saint wouldn’t live long if they acted recklessly.

Right now, Yu Wen Baji was panicked and furious, but against three Rank-8 Elemental Demons, all he could do was fume.

Meanwhile, Yu Fei had already annihilated the second wave of enemies. As a result, when he led his forces in the breakout, they encountered no resistance whatsoever.

The entire length of Matie Road was wide open.

With the combined perception of numerous prodigies, Yu Fei took in the entire Celestial Sword Gorge battlefield at a glance, quickly identifying the key strategic points.

This was the first time Yu Fei had witnessed a large-scale, coordinated battle involving transcendent powers firsthand. He had only ever seen recordings of such events in his general education classes.

The ground war in Celestial Sword Gorge was being waged by a frontal assault force composed of densely packed Rank-5 and Rank-6 Spider Demons. The human side consisted of organized combat regiments of fighters below the Grandmaster level, supplemented by various ad-hoc groups fighting together. In some sectors, Rank-7 Elemental Demons were even leading the charge.

High above the bloody, life-or-death struggle on the ground, human Grandmasters had formed dozens of small squads. A subtle link seemed to exist between these squads, allowing them to divide and encircle large swaths of Rank-7 Elemental Demons. This aerial battlefield stretched for over ten kilometers.

It was analogous to the human Grandmasters using their Domains to create a large-scale formation, while the clusters of Rank-7 Elemental Demons were trying to break through it.

At the absolute center of it all was the battle involving Yu Wen Baji and several Great Grandmasters.

Hundreds, even thousands of meters up in the sky, phantom images of blades, spears, axes, and clubs flickered continuously. Flames, astral winds, and lightning born from their Domains raged, their powers shifting and changing unpredictably.

As Yu Fei observed carefully, he realized that the upper and lower battlefields were, in fact, linked.

From the human positions on the ground, massive Elemental Energy Cannons would periodically fire up into the sky. These cumbersome weapons packed a tremendous punch; if a Rank-7 Elemental Demon was restrained by a human Grandmaster’s Domain, a single blast could very well kill it.

The formations of the Spider Demon Corps had similar tactics. Typically, twenty to thirty Rank-6 Spider Demons of different elemental attributes would gather together. They would resonate their super-energy firearms at a specific frequency, creating a powerful beam of energy that shot toward the sky.

However, the human Grandmasters neutralized the vast majority of these beams with layers of Domain power, rendering them largely ineffective. Still, they were enough to cause some trouble.
