I Came to Divorce Him—His Whole Regiment Adopted Me
Chapter 166: His Jealousy
Chapter 166: Chapter 166: His Jealousy
He had never met his father, so naturally, he felt no attachment. He had never imagined he would one day meet him.
Lu Zhengchuan’s thinking was simple: the man was a person first and a father second.
He would support whatever the man did, as long as it wasn’t against Hua Country.
However, based on the intel he had, the man had never actually brought those mercenaries into Hua Country territory. Everything was still under control.
That evening, Lu Zhengchuan waited for Su Wan to come home, wanting to talk to her about the matter.
But by eight o’clock, there was still no sign of her.
Lu Zhengchuan said, "Aunt Zhao, could you please watch the children for me? I’m going to go get Wanwan."
"Of course. You go on, be careful out there." Aunt Zhao handed him a flashlight and added a few words of caution.
Lu Zhengchuan grunted in acknowledgment. Without a bicycle, he simply walked, following the alley to the school gate. He was just about to pull out his officer’s ID to get on campus when he saw a familiar figure emerge from the school.
A smile spread across Lu Zhengchuan’s face, but in the next instant, it froze.
He saw a young, bespectacled man walking beside Su Wan. The man had a scholarly air, and his gaze toward Su Wan was filled with admiration. They were holding a book together, discussing something. Their proximity was intimate—so much so that they didn’t even notice when their shoulders brushed.
Lu Zhengchuan’s lips instantly tightened into a thin line.
"Su Wan, let’s continue our discussion tomorrow. It’s getting late, so you should head home."
"Okay, Senior Lin. You get some rest too." Su Wan nodded and gave him a polite smile. After watching him leave, she put her book away and prepared to head home.
Just as she reached the school gate, a powerful hand suddenly grabbed her and pulled her aside. Startled, she instinctively raised a hand to strike back when she heard a familiar voice.
"Wanwan, who was that you were so close with?"
"Zheng Chuan?" Su Wan looked up and saw it was indeed Lu Zhengchuan, dressed in casual clothes.
He was frowning, his face a mask of displeasure.
Su Wan realized he had misunderstood. "That was just a senior from my research project," she explained. "When did you get here? How long have you been waiting?"
"Do you even care how long I’ve been here? All your attention was on someone else. You wouldn’t have cared whether I came to get you or not, would you?" Lu Zhengchuan’s words were sharp with anger.
Su Wan couldn’t help but reach out and pat his cheek. "What are you talking about?"
"Come on, let’s go home."
Su Wan went into the bicycle shed to get her bike. Lu Zhengchuan followed behind. Seeing her start to push it, he took it from her.
Su Wan frowned at his back. In his casual clothes, Lu Zhengchuan looked less imposing, but his disciplined, powerful build still made it obvious at a glance that he was a soldier.
Right now, his anger made him unapproachable.
Su Wan followed him, opening her mouth to speak several times but never managing to get the words out.
She followed him out of the bicycle shed. Lu Zhengchuan got on the seat and said, "Get on."
"Okay." Su Wan got on, holding her book in one arm and wrapping the other around his waist.
Lu Zhengchuan’s entire body went rigid for a moment before he started pedaling, acting as if nothing was wrong.
"Don’t be angry. It was such a small thing, what’s there to be upset about?" Su Wan coaxed.
"A small thing?" Lu Zhengchuan’s pedaling became erratic, speeding up and slowing down, making Su Wan frown with apprehension. But considering his state of mind, she didn’t say anything to criticize him.
"I already told you, he’s just a senior I’m doing research with. Our only goal is to finish the project. It’s completely platonic."
Lu Zhengchuan brought the bicycle to a sudden stop. Caught off guard, Su Wan bumped her head against his back, which felt as hard as a rock.
"Your shoulders were touching."
"They were?" Su Wan asked, confused.
"Of course they were. I saw it with my own two eyes. How could that be wrong?" Lu Zhengchuan’s voice was laced with anger.
Su Wan pressed her lips together. "Sorry, I didn’t notice. Next time... There won’t be a next time."
"Please don’t be angry. We so rarely get to see each other; let’s not waste our time fighting, okay?" Su Wan rubbed her temples, feeling weary.
Lu Zhengchuan pressed his lips together. "I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have gotten angry."
"I’m not saying you shouldn’t be angry, but it really was just a small thing," Su Wan said helplessly, tugging on his shirt. "Come on, let’s go home."
Lu Zhengchuan still felt uneasy. He just hated seeing other men get close to Su Wan.
The feeling of unease lingered, and he didn’t know why.
When they arrived home, Su Wan got off the bike. Hearing them, Mother Su came out.
"Wanwan, you’re back! Have you eaten dinner yet? I can make you some chicken noodle soup."
"Mom, I ate at school this afternoon, so no soup for me. I’m not hungry. I’m going to go see the kids." Carrying her book, Su Wan went straight into the room.
Lu Zhengchuan parked the bike and followed her to the doorway of the room. He saw Su Wan lovingly pick up Tuantuan and start playing with him.
A fresh wave of jealousy washed over him. ’If Wanwan had just smiled at me like that, I would’ve been fine,’ he thought. ’But she didn’t. She just frowned. Does that mean she doesn’t care about me at all?’
"...What are you doing standing in the doorway? Have you washed up yet?" After playing with the baby for a moment, Su Wan turned to ask him.
Lu Zhengchuan shook his head. "Not yet. I’ll go get some water. You can wash up first."
"Okay." Su Wan had been busy all day and was exhausted. Once Lu Zhengchuan carried the hot water to the washroom, she called him over to watch the children so she could clean up.
Lu Zhengchuan went back into the room and watched over the two babies for a moment. Yuanyuan suddenly spat up some of the milk she had just drunk.
Lu Zhengchuan was no longer the flustered father he used to be. He stood up, turned to grab a towel from the desk, and deftly wiped the milk from around Yuanyuan’s mouth before helping her sit up.
Sure enough, a moment later, Yuanyuan’s little mouth twitched and she let out a small, milky burp.
Lu Zhengchuan let out a sigh of relief and gently laid Yuanyuan back down.
He turned to take the soiled towel out to be washed and grab a clean one. They had plenty of these small cloth rags, all made by Second Sister-in-law Su and Aunt Zhao in their spare moments.
He was in a hurry and accidentally bumped the desk, knocking over the book Su Wan had left there.
Lu Zhengchuan bent down to pick it up, and a bookmark slipped out from between the pages.
He picked up both the book and the bookmark. As he was about to set them down, he caught sight of some writing on the bookmark out of the corner of his eye.
Lu Zhengchuan picked up the bookmark, intending only a casual glance. But when he made out the words written on it, his expression turned as black as thunder.
Su Wan, having finished her bath and washed her hair, came out wearing her nightgown.
She returned to their room and was about to sit down to dry her hair.
The moment she stepped inside, she saw Lu Zhengchuan sitting at the desk. He was completely still, silent, and his expression was terrible.
