Chapter 161: Chapter 161: Little Daughter

"We were separated for three months when we were newlyweds, too, and you didn’t seem to miss me then," Su Wan retorted, breathless from his kisses.

Lu Zhengchuan’s hand lingered on her waist as he scattered kisses across her skin, his breathing growing heavier. "I did miss you."

’It’s just that I was too embarrassed to say it back then. Plus, we didn’t have an emotional foundation yet, so it was inevitable that we were a bit reserved. But there’s no need to tell Wanwan all that. He did have some pride to maintain, after all.’

"So, Wanwan, didn’t you miss me?"

Finding it amusing that he asked with such self-assurance, Su Wan reached out and rubbed his ear. "I missed you a lot when my incision was hurting after giving birth."

"Hm?"

"I wanted to punch you. I wanted you to be the one to give birth."

Lu Zhengchuan’s ears burned, and his eyes filled with heartache. He reached out, lifted her top, and saw the C-section scar. He couldn’t stop himself from lowering his head and covering it with a flurry of kisses.

"Wanwan, you’ve been through so much. We’re not having any more children. With our two kids, I feel my life is complete."

He was speaking from the heart. The thought that had crossed Lu Zhengchuan’s mind most often in his life was that he might one day die quietly on a mission in some unknown place.

If he was lucky, he would die within the country. If he was unlucky, it might be in some godforsaken corner abroad. Worse yet, his remains might not even make it home.

He had once dared to dream of marrying the woman he loved and living a cozy life with a wife and kids, but he’d always believed it was an impossible fantasy.

If his superior hadn’t pushed him to settle down and get married, he would never have ended up with Wanwan, and he would never have known this kind of happiness.

"Hm? Isn’t that a bit of an exaggeration?" Su Wan pursed her lips.

"It’s not. I’m serious."

He placed his hand on her lower back. "Does it still ache? Let me give you a massage."

"Okay. It’s not that sore anymore, but my back does ache if I sit for too long."

"That’s because you’re exhausted and overworking yourself. If it’s too much, you should just forget about the lab and focus on your studies."

Su Wan rejected the idea without a second thought. "I’m still so young. If I don’t work hard on my career, who knows what kind of gossip people will spread? They’ll say I’m not good enough for you. After all, a certain someone is a regiment commander now, which I’m sure makes you even more of a catch."

"I haven’t been fooling around! I keep my eyes straight ahead whenever female comrades walk by." Lu Zhengchuan practically raised his hand to swear an oath.

Of course, Su Wan knew that. If Lu Zhengchuan were the type to fool around, their relationship would be polite and distant, not as affectionate as it was now.

"Okay, I need to get up now," Su Wan said.

Lu Zhengchuan kissed her neck, careful not to leave a mark.

"...The babies are still breastfeeding." Su Wan’s face flushed with a hint of shame and embarrassment as she mentioned it.

"What do you mean?" Lu Zhengchuan froze for a second, confused.

Su Wan bit her lip. "It means... every few hours at night, I either have to feed the babies or express the milk and keep it in cold water for them to drink when they wake up in the morning."

"...How do you express it?" Lu Zhengchuan’s voice grew raspy, and his gaze drifted uncontrollably to her chest.

Su Wan couldn’t help but cover her eyes with her hands. "Don’t look."

But Lu Zhengchuan gently but firmly pulled her hands away. "Wanwan, we’re a married couple. We’re going to be together for the rest of our lives. What’s there to be embarrassed about? Haven’t you already seen every part of me?"

His attempt at comforting her was just making her more flustered.

"What kind of nonsense is that? What’s the big deal about a grown man being seen naked?"

Lu Zhengchuan peppered her earlobe and face with kisses. Teased by his actions, Su Wan instinctively tilted her head back, her breathing growing hot.

"What I mean is, I’ve never treated you like a stranger, Wanwan. Life in the army isn’t very private, but you’re the only one who’s seen every part of me. So, if we see every part of each other, doesn’t that mean our bond is the closest in the world?"

Su Wan’s eyes grew warm. She had to admit, he had a point.

"Mhm," Su Wan hummed in agreement.

Lu Zhengchuan’s voice was thick with desire. "Wanwan, let me help you..."

"Mmm..."

After their passionate interlude, Su Wan was covered in a fine sheen of sweat. DRIP. A drop landed on her face. Her hazy eyes fluttered open to see a bead of sweat slide down the resolute line of her husband’s bronze jaw and fall from his chin onto her cheek.

The next morning, Su Wan wasn’t even sure how she had woken up.

Not until a cool towel was placed on her face, chasing away most of her drowsiness.

Lu Zhengchuan wiped her face with the towel and then handed her a toothbrush. "Wanwan, you go ahead and get ready. I’ll change Tuantuan and Yuanyuan’s diapers."

Mother Su walked in, took in the scene, and asked, "Wanwan, what time did Zheng Chuan get back last night?"

"You have classes to attend and you’re still not awake? You’re even making Zheng Chuan wash your face for you. Have you gotten completely lazy?"

"Mom, Wanwan had to get up in the middle of the night to let me in, and we stayed up talking for a while. That’s why she’s still tired. It’s no trouble for me to help. I’ve missed her so much," Lu Zhengchuan said, sweet words flowing effortlessly.

"Mom, could you please teach me how to change the babies’ diapers?"

Forgetting her nagging, Mother Su hurried over to tend to the two babies.

Su Wan was wide awake now. She shot a look at Lu Zhengchuan, who grinned smugly, his expression clearly asking for praise.

Su Wan gave him a coy little slap before turning her back to him and brushing her teeth in silence.

Lu Zhengchuan saw her bright red ears, covered in fine, downy hair. They were so adorable he couldn’t stop smiling.

"Zheng Chuan, just like that. Did you get it?"

Hearing Mother Su’s question, Lu Zhengchuan snapped back to attention and immediately straightened up.

"Yes, Mom, I’ve got it. Take a look, is this right?"

Lu Zhengchuan didn’t dare to change Yuanyuan’s diaper first. His little girl seemed as fragile as a porcelain doll. He decided to practice on the boy first, who seemed obviously tougher.

Tuantuan looked at the man before him without any fear, reaching out with his tiny hands to grab at him.

"Tuantuan, it’s Daddy..."

Tuantuan couldn’t say the word, only blowing a few spit bubbles in response.

Lu Zhengchuan didn’t mind at all. Under Mother Su’s guidance, he successfully changed his son’s diaper and then placed the prepared bottle in Tuantuan’s hands.

Tuantuan hugged the bottle and began to gulp it down. His appetite was excellent, just like his father’s.

When it was little Yuanyuan’s turn, Lu Zhengchuan was much more confident. But his confidence was misplaced—he immediately met his Waterloo. The moment his hand touched Yuanyuan, she began to cry with a soft whimper.

Yuanyuan wasn’t crying loudly; it was more of a quiet, sniffling sob, but the tears rolling down her cheeks were very real. The sight broke the new father’s heart.

"Don’t cry, don’t cry. Be a good girl, Yuanyuan. Tell Daddy what’s wrong..."

Lu Zhengchuan couldn’t console her. Mother Su, her heart aching for her granddaughter, joined in, but the two of them were completely unable to calm the baby down.

When Su Wan came over after getting ready, she saw Lu Zhengchuan standing to the side, at a complete loss and looking terribly worried, as if he’d just encountered the greatest challenge of his life.
