I Build a Shelter in the Eternal Night

Chapter 437: "Even if a Mayfly Falls into the Sea, I Will Burn My Blood to Set the Heavens Ablaze

He suddenly stopped.

The black robe he had been wearing fell away on its own, though there was no wind.

Revealing his true appearance.

His skin was covered in bulging pustules the size of basketballs. Through their semi-translucent surface, a thick liquid could be seen flowing within. The man had lost all semblance of a human form.

Even his cheeks and neck were covered with several of the pustules.

His expression was indiscernible.

His face was unrecognizable.

This corpulent man stood in the downpour and turned to look in the direction Tian Yi had been sent flying by the Great Ghost. After a long, deep look, a ragged and hoarse voice escaped his throat.

“Night Watcher, Number Ninety-Seven.”

“—Activate!”

The man stepped into the air, each step leaving an impression, as he walked beyond the defense line and stood suspended.

The thick liquid within the pustules on his body began to churn as if boiling, until…

…cracks appeared on the surface of every pustule.

He slowly opened his arms.

He took one last look at the world around him.

He took a brown sugar steamed bun from his robes, one he had secretly brought from the Mortal Realm. He lifted a pustule blocking his mouth and, with great difficulty, stuffed the bun inside and began to chew. Amidst the grating sounds, he whispered with a hint of a smile.

“Sweet…”

“Finally… no more pain.”

The next moment!

An eerie green light, like an aurora, instantly bloomed!

It surged continuously into the night!

Almost half of the 27-kilometer-long Yellow Springs Entrance Defense Line was enveloped by the eerie green aurora.

Everyone saw this scene.

Wherever the eerie green aurora passed, countless Ghost Tides and even Ghost Kings fell. Only the Great Ghosts managed to escape, but they too were grievously wounded.

Almost the entire Ghost Tide ahead was wiped out in one fell swoop.

The Yellow Springs Entrance Defense Line, which had been on the verge of falling, held once more.

This was the strategic weapon of the Eternal Night Hall: a Night Watcher.

After undergoing special modification, they became immensely powerful, yet caused no harm to humans or buildings. The only drawback was that the modified Night Watcher would endure excruciating pain for the rest of their life—the more intense the modification, the stronger the pain.

But—

At the far end of the cleared area, a massive Ghost Tide once again poured out from the eternal night, seemingly endless and impossible to kill completely.

Those grievously wounded Great Ghosts roared and charged forward once again.

More frenzied.

More furious.

The purpose of a strategic weapon wasn’t to end the battle, but to buy time. If no counterattack was launched during this window, it was merely delaying the inevitable.

But…

Reinforcements from the Mortal Realm had arrived.

In the sky.

Three Mortal Realm cruise missiles wreathed in lightning shot across the eternal night at extreme speed, landing with terrifying force amidst the Ghost Tide outside the Yellow Springs Entrance Defense Line.

“BOOM!!”

The sound of a massive explosion suddenly erupted.

Countless arcs of lightning, like the wrath of a Thunder God cleansing the earth, surged across the ground.

The acrid smell of scorched flesh filled the entire sky.

However, this volley of cruise missiles mostly hit empty ground. After all, the area had just been cleared by the Night Watcher. All they hit were the twenty to thirty heavily wounded Great Ghosts, parts of the battlefield the Night Watcher’s attack hadn’t reached, and the new Ghost Tide pouring from the eternal night.

A tremendous explosion echoed between heaven and earth.

The person in charge on the Yellow Springs Entrance Defense Line, his eyes filled with fear and panic, steadied himself and quickly barked an order: “Pour the Corpse Melting Water! Clear the Ghost Corpses in front of the line!”

But soon.

The cleared area filled up once again as the Ghost Tide poured endlessly from the eternal night.

About ten breaths later.

In the sky.

Three more Mortal Realm cruise missiles, wreathed in terrifying lightning, streaked through the night sky and slammed into the Ghost Tide. Countless fragments of Ghost Corpses and wisps of eerie green liquid burst into the air.

The area was cleared once again.

The Ghost Tide from the eternal night surged forth once more.

Ten breaths later.

Three more Mortal Realm cruise missiles arrived right on schedule.

…

Behind the Yellow Springs Entrance Defense Line, Tian Yi lay on the Wilderness, his status unknown. From the Mother and Child Stone in his possession, Chen Fan’s urgent and heavy voice kept sounding.

“Tian Yi, report the situation on the front line.”

“Tian Yi!”

“Tian Yi!”

But there was no reply. The voice echoed, lonely, in the night.

“…”

One hundred fully-equipped Flying Ships from the Mortal Realm had taken to the skies overnight the moment they received the distress call. They were rushing to the Yellow Springs Entrance Defense Line at top speed. But no matter how fast the Flying Ships were, it would still be two hours before they arrived.

Chen Fan stood on the deck of a Flying Ship.

He looked at the map on the translucent panel before him, repeatedly tapping a spot in front of the Yellow Springs Entrance Defense Line. Each tap launched three missiles from the Celestial Pillar at the Mortal Realm Port to support the front line.

The missiles were countless times faster than his Flying Ship.

But he didn’t know the situation at the front.

He could only fire blind.

Three rounds every sixty breaths.

A thought quickly struck him. He used a Sound Transmission Talisman to contact Elder Qi at the No. 7 Defense Line. “Help me contact the person in charge of the Yellow Springs Entrance Defense Line. Tell me, what’s the situation there right now?”

“Understood!”

Elder Qi didn’t know that the Yellow Springs Entrance Defense Line was in trouble; he hadn’t received any news. According to procedure, he wasn’t supposed to act as an intermediary, as it would be considered leaking confidential intelligence of the Eternal Night Hall.

But he trusted Chen Fan enough, and Chen Fan’s tone was urgent.

This made him realize that something had definitely gone wrong at the Yellow Springs Entrance Defense Line, though he had no idea how, since it was supposed to be a rear defense line.

Soon—

Chen Fan was connected to the person in charge of the Yellow Springs Entrance Defense Line.

“This is the Jiangbei Mortal Realm. Tell me the current combat status of the Yellow Springs Entrance Defense Line.”
