Chapter 161: Chapter 161: I Really Can’t Be Without You

Julian Sterling brought Evelyn Grant back to his place.

To keep up the act, he didn’t take her to a hospital. Instead, he had his secretary secretly bring a doctor to his home to treat her.

The more the doctor examined her, the deeper his brow furrowed.

"She just had an abortion. Why is she up and about? Aren’t you afraid she could hemorrhage! It’s a good thing she only fainted from weakness. If it were anything worse... the consequences would be unimaginable!"

Julian Sterling stood to the side, listening to the doctor’s scolding. He nodded, letting the doctor assume that the child Evelyn had been carrying was his—that he was the father.

"I’m sorry. It was my negligence as her husband. Is my wife going to be all right?"

"She seems fine for now. With some rest, she should wake up in a little while." The doctor glanced at him and advised earnestly, "If you two aren’t planning for a baby, you should be more careful with contraception. An abortion is very hard on the body. This isn’t a joke. If one of these procedures goes wrong, or if she doesn’t recover properly, she might... never be able to have children. I’m not just trying to scare you."

As an OB-GYN, the doctor had seen this kind of thing all too often.

When they’re young, couples are often careless. They get caught up in the moment, don’t use protection, and just get an abortion if a pregnancy happens.

Then, when they finally want a child, it’s too late. They can’t conceive.

Julian Sterling listened intently, a look of shame on his face. "I understand. I haven’t been paying enough attention to my wife. I’ll be sure to be more careful in the future."

"Good. She’s not in any serious danger now. Let her sleep a while longer. Don’t disturb her."

"Okay. Thank you, Doctor."

After personally seeing the doctor out, Julian turned and went back to the bedroom.

Looking at the person lying on the bed, for a fleeting moment, he was overcome with the urge to cry. A sharp sting hit his nose.

This was the happiness that had once been within his grasp. Every day when he came home from the company, Evelyn Grant would be there. Not only would she be waiting in the bedroom, but she would have fresh fruit prepared for him. She would keep the house spotless. She would remember every important family matter, big or small, and help him handle the trivial things, like looking after his parents.

Evelyn Grant truly was the gold standard of a wife.

Even when she was upset or unhappy, she would never throw a tantrum at him or say a single harsh word.

She was afraid of upsetting Julian’s mood.

Evelyn always felt that Julian was already exhausted after a long day at the company. If she couldn’t greet him with a smile when he got back, but instead burdened him with her troubles, it would put too much pressure on him.

She thought of every possible way to be considerate of him.

In the past, he had never really stopped to think about everything Evelyn had given.

Over time, Julian had truly come to see it all as a matter of course.

That when he came home, there should rightfully be someone there to smile at him, take care of him, look after his family, and manage every little detail.

And because of that, when Evelyn Grant suddenly vanished from his world, Julian Sterling was left utterly dumbfounded.

Only then did he realize just how important Evelyn was in his life.

He simply couldn’t live without her.

Julian Sterling tiptoed over, raised his hand, and gently stroked Evelyn Grant’s cheek.

She was still asleep, her brow slightly furrowed.

He gently smoothed it for her.

"Evelyn, you’re finally back home. I really can’t live without you."
