I Became the Villain Alpha's Omega (BL)
Chapter 491: A Strange Set of Pages
The grand library of the Valtrane capital estate was quiet in the late afternoon. Pale sunlight streamed through the high arched windows, falling across towering shelves and long rows of books as dust drifted lazily through the air.
At the far end of the third floor, tucked deep within the restricted magic section, Zarius sat alone at a broad desk. The silence here was deeper than anywhere else in the library, broken only by the occasional rustle of a turning page as Zarius continued his research, his attention fixed entirely on the ancient text in front of him.
In front of him rested a tall stack of thick, leather-bound tomes he had pulled from the upper shelves. Their spines were worn, the gold-leaf lettering on each one faded. Zarius pulled one heavy book toward himself, the thick parchment creaking as he opened it. He rested his chin in one broad palm, his dark eyes scanning the dense, handwritten script with quiet, absolute focus.
Ever since he had learned the truth, that the Cherion who walked beside him, laughed with him, and held his heart was not the original Cherion Antel, but a soul from an entirely different world, Zarius’s mind had been unable to rest.
To anyone else, such a realization might have bred terror, suspicion, or madness. But Zarius was a practical man, a commander who had seen the strangest corners of the northern borders. The world was vast, far larger and more terrifyingly complex than the priests or palace scholars cared to admit. It made sense in a strange, undeniable way. The way Cherion looked at the world, his sharp, modern clarity, his complete lack of lingering bitterness over old family grudges, it all fit.
Zarius didn’t care where Cherion’s soul had originally come from. He loved this man, completely and irrevocably.
Yet, love brought a quiet, gnawing fear.
Zarius turned a page, his long fingers trailing down a complex diagram of spiritual vessels and magic tethering. He read every single line with meticulous care. He wanted to know how it worked. He needed to understand if there were rules, limits, or warning signs. He was a man who prepared for every battle long before the first horn blew, and if there was even the slimmest chance that something could interrupt Cherion’s tether to this world, Zarius wanted to take every possible precaution.
He was so deeply absorbed in a paragraph detailing spiritual resonance that he didn’t hear the soft, feather-light footsteps creeping up the wooden spiral staircase behind him.
Suddenly, a pair of warm, slender hands reached around from behind his leather chair, gently covering Zarius’s eyes.
"Can you guess who this is, Duke Valtrane?" a low, gravelly voice rasped directly against his ear, the attempt at sounding deep and intimidating so terribly fake that Zarius could have identified the culprit without even turning around.
A small, genuine smile touched the corners of Zarius’s lips in the darkness. He didn’t flinch. He simply leaned back slightly into the warmth pressing against his shoulders.
"If this is not Cherion," Zarius said smoothly, "then I am going to have to break these hands."
The hands immediately dropped from his eyes. Cherion stepped around the side of the chair, letting out a dramatic, exaggerated sigh as he crossed his arms over his chest.
"You can’t just go around threatening to break people’s hands so easily, Zarius," Cherion pouted, his light eyes sparkling with playful affection. "It’s like you think crushing fingers is as casual as snapping a piece of candy. What if it had been Marielle trying to surprise you? Would you break your own sister’s arm too?"
Zarius turned his head, looking up at Cherion with a calm, dry smirk. "I found it exceedingly difficult to imagine anyone in this world catching Marielle so easily off guard. And if someone were capable of such a thing, she would surely have broken their arm long before I could ever come to her aid."
Cherion let out a quiet, soft laugh, the light sound echoing pleasantly off the tall book-lined walls. He shook his head, stepping closer to the heavy oak desk. He leaned over, resting half of his upper body across the polished wood, his chin propped in his hand as he looked down at the mountain of thick volumes Zarius had accumulated.
"Ugh, look at all of this reading," Cherion murmured, nose wrinkling slightly in playful disgust. "I thought you were in here catching up on tax reports, not trying to read the entire library in one afternoon."
"I was merely looking through a few historical references," Zarius replied smoothly, shifting his elbow subtly to cover the lower half of the open page.
Cherion’s sharp eyes caught the small, guarded movement immediately. A mischievous, curious glint entered his expression. "Oh? Historical references? Since when do you hide historical references from me?"
"I am not hiding anything," Zarius said, keeping his tone perfectly even, though he tried to slide the heavy book toward the side of the desk.
"You totally are," Cherion declared with a triumphant grin.
Before Zarius could stop him without being physically rough, Cherion reached out with quick, nimble fingers, snagging the top corner of the thick book and pulling it across the smooth wood toward his side of the desk.
"Let’s see what the great Duke of the North is reading in secret..." Cherion started cheerfully, his eyes dropping to the top of the page.
His voice cut off mid-sentence.
The playful, teasing warmth drained from Cherion’s face in an instant. His smile faltered, his lips parting slightly as his eyes scanned the bold, archaic lettering stamped across the top of the left Chapter:
On the Displacement of Souls, External Vessels, and the Mechanics of Soul Swapping.
Cherion stood frozen over the desk, the quiet ticking of the grandfather clock suddenly sounding unnaturally loud in the silent room. He stared down at the detailed diagrams of floating spiritual tethers and magic arrays designed to sever or anchor a soul to a physical body.
Slowly, Cherion raised his head, his light eyes locking onto Zarius with a heavy, bewildered frown.
"Soul swapping?" Cherion whispered, his voice quiet and tinged with confusion. "Zarius... why on earth are you reading about this?"
