Chapter 488: The Tea with the King

Philia stood before the heavy doors of King Alderon’s private study, adjusting the hem of his coat with a quiet, practiced breath. He raised his hand and knocked three soft times against the wood.

"Enter," a low, raspy voice called out from within.

Philia opened the door and stepped quietly into the royal study. The room was warm and still, with only the faint rustle of turning pages breaking the silence. She paused for a moment after entering, allowing the door to fall shut behind her before making her way farther inside.

King Alderon was seated at the desk in the middle of the room. Several papers lay spread before him, some bearing the marks of recent notes and corrections. He had been reading when she entered, but at the sound of the door, he lowered the page in his hand and raised his eyes.

"Ah, Philia," Alderon said, setting his quill down against a bronze holder. "Come in, child. Sit."

"Your Majesty," Philia murmured, offering a graceful bow before crossing the room toward the long cushioned seat placed before the king’s desk.

Before Philia could sit, a young maid in a crisp white apron stepped quietly from the side alcove, carrying a silver tray with a steaming porcelain teapot and two cups. She set the tray down on the corner of the desk, carefully pouring the fragrant amber liquid into both cups before executing a silent bow and retreating quietly from the room, pulling the doors shut behind her.

The soft click of the latch echoed through the quiet study, leaving the two of them in complete privacy.

Once they were alone, Alderon set aside the papers he had been reading. He rose from behind his desk and walked around it, making his way toward the seating area where Philia had settled. Rather than return to his desk, he took the seat opposite her.

Alderon reached out, picking up his teacup and gesturing toward the second one. "Please, drink. It is a fresh mountain blend from the eastern provinces. Very soothing."

"Thank you, Your Majesty," Philia said gently, taking his seat and lifting the warm porcelain cup between his fingers. He blew softly over the surface, taking a tiny sip.

The King leaned back into his carved high-backed chair, watching Philia with a calm, paternal gaze. "I wanted to ask how your recent journey went."

"Everything went remarkably well, Your Majesty," Philia replied smoothly, setting the cup back with barely a sound. "The roads were clear, and the children at the shelter were overjoyed to receive the fresh supplies. The winter clothes and grain arrived just in time."

Alderon smiled faintly, a rare, genuine softness touching his weary features. "I am glad to hear that. My ministers often forget how harsh the winter months can be for those outside the palace walls."

"It is all thanks to your grace, Sire," Philia said, lowering his eyes with modest gratitude. "I am deeply grateful that you continue to grant me permission to travel back there, to send help to the orphanage whenever it is needed."

Alderon let out a quiet, dry chuckle, waving his hand dismissively. "Nonsense. There is no need for such endless gratitude, Philia. Havenwood is your home. It is where you grew up, where your roots are. How could anyone deny a man the right to care for his own home and his own people?"

"You are far too kind, Your Majesty," Philia murmured softly.

"Are the shelter’s funds holding up?" Alderon asked, taking another sip of his tea. "If the winter stores are thin, I can have the royal steward allocate extra gold."

"The current supplies are more than sufficient, Sire," Philia assured him gently. "The shelter is well-stocked for the coming months. I only hope that the other orphanages across the capital might receive similar support before the heavy snows fall."

Alderon nodded slowly, resting his forearm against the dark mahogany armrest. "Speaking of that... it seems you have inspired quite a trend in the court recently."

Philia tilted his head slightly, a faint, polite flicker of confusion touching his light eyes. "Inspired, Your Majesty?"

"Yes," Alderon said, a small, amused glint in his eyes. "Prince Gillian and Princess Iryna formally requested my permission to visit the orphanages in the capital. They have been bringing supply wagons into the common quarter since yesterday."

Philia’s face remained a picture of serene, innocent surprise. "Oh? They did?"

"Indeed," Alderon confirmed with a firm nod. "It surprised the council, to say the least. The old ministers were practically wringing their hands, worrying about foreign royalty wandering around our common streets."

Philia let out a soft, sweet smile, his tone completely open and warm. "They are simply good, kindhearted people, Sire. Prince Gillian and Princess Iryna possess truly generous hearts. To see foreign guests taking such a hands-on interest in helping our people... it shows how much the relationship between Solaric and Auzelian has improved."

"You have a remarkably forgiving perspective on court politics, Philia," Alderon remarked, though his tone was fond. "Most men in this palace look for dark motives behind every gesture. But I agree, it is a good sign for our two empires. Peace is far easier to maintain when there is mutual goodwill."

"It brings great peace to my heart as well," Philia said softly. He paused for a brief moment, swirling the dark amber liquid in his porcelain cup before looking up at the King with quiet, gentle concern. "If I may ask, Your Majesty... is Princess Iryna truly fully recovered now?"

Alderon’s expression shifted slightly, a subtle shadow of old anger and regret passing over his brow at the mention of that dark incident.

"She is," Alderon replied, his voice firm and steady. "Thank God she survived that foul poison. She has regained her full strength, and her mind is as sharp as ever."

Philia looked down into his teacup once more, watching his own calm reflection rippling gently across the surface.

"I am so very relieved to hear that, Your Majesty."
