Ye Qianning’s expression turned grave. If the Gu worm inside him had been raised on blood, it would be extremely troublesome. Even surgically extracting it from his eyeball would be incredibly dangerous.

Under the piercing light, the crimson hue in the depths of his eyes receded, returning to its original color.

"Do your eyes experience unbearable pain every so often?" she asked, putting the Luminous Pearl away.

Sang Zhi closed his eyes. After a few moments of silence, he replied, "It doesn’t hurt."

The pain in his eyes was nowhere near as bone-deep as the ache in his heart.

Pain—only agonizing pain could prove that he was still alive.

Only pain would ensure he never forgot...!

Ye Qianning didn’t ask further. She took out a pill and placed it in his mouth. Over the past ten years, his eye condition had severely deteriorated; she had to figure out the nature of the Gu worm as quickly as possible.

Ten years ago, the Gu worm had been dormant, but its current awakening made it impossible for his eyes to tolerate strong light.

If this dragged on for another few years, she feared that even if the Gu worm was removed, his eyes would never see the light again.

Sang Zhi opened his eyes, immediately met with her tightly knitted brows. "You don’t need to worry. I actually like these red pupils."

He enjoyed seeing the fear and terror on others’ faces when they met his gaze.

Even more, he loved seeing the frightened look on that person’s face every time they saw him!

"What’s with all this Inner Strength of yours?" When Ye Qianning was transferring her Inner Strength to him earlier, she noticed that the energy within his body was overbearingly aggressive.

No wonder he felt so cold and alien when she first saw him.

His Inner Strength was too domineering. Sang Zhi hadn’t practiced martial arts in his early years, and although he had endured the violent surges to contain this energy, it was far beyond his control.

Only now did she understand why her father had called him crazy!

Even though this overbearing Inner Strength wasn’t acting up right now, it wouldn’t stay dormant forever. If he lost control over it, he could easily lose his mind.

"Perhaps the heavens took pity on me," Sang Zhi said slowly, his voice magnetic and alluring.

Ye Qianning frowned. "What nonsense are you talking about?"

"It’s true. I’m very glad to have obtained this Inner Strength. Only with it can I get what I want," Sang Zhi said. Resting his head on one hand, he lay on his side and stared intently at her.

Ye Qianning recalled his childhood dream. "To ensure that the people live in peace and happiness, free from the suffering of war, military might is indeed important capital. However, the Inner Strength in your body is far too overbearing and doesn’t suit you."

The people living in peace and happiness, free from the suffering of war?

Sang Zhi paused, then curled his lips into a mesmerizing smile. "The people living in peace? You’re wrong. That’s no longer what I want. The masses... what does their life or death have to do with me?"

Life and death were up to fate—why should he save the world?

He couldn’t even save the person he cared about most, so how could he save anyone else?

"What do you want?"

Sang Zhi remained silent. His red eyes seemed to conceal a smoldering fire, his gaze fixed on her with a fiery intensity.

Ye Qianning met his gaze. His eyes were like small, flickering flames. A faint, enigmatic smile played on his lips, softening his absurdly handsome face.

"Forget it if you don’t want to tell me."

He had grown up; he was different now.

"What you want is what I want," Sang Zhi said slowly.

Ye Qianning froze for a brief moment.

"So, you have to tell me what you want and what you want to do." As long as it was something she desired, even if it was the entire world, he would seize it for her!

Ye Qianning snapped out of her daze and chuckled. "I want to live to be a hundred."

"I’ve heard that the immortal mountain of Penglai has elixirs for immortality," Sang Zhi said. "I’ll give you my eyes."

"..."

Ye Qianning was struck speechless. A second later, she saw him actually raising his hand to his face. He didn’t look like he was joking at all. Terrified, she immediately grabbed his hand. "What on earth do I need your eyes for?"
