I Became a Lord in the Game
Chapter 228
A crowd’s mind was terrifying.
At first, people would think, No, surely not—that is too much. And yet once everyone around them said, “Yes! Let us do it!” they would find themselves swept along before they even realized it.
When everyone spoke with one voice, you started to believe you were the one in the wrong, and that their words were right.
And right now, I was being dragged along by that very psychology.
“Please! I beg you.”
“Your Grace! No—Your Majesty! Please lead us!”
These mad nobles looked as though they were straining every muscle to drown me. To shout so openly in a place where all eyes were gathered—
It made it look as though I were openly announcing, to the entire world, that I intended to ascend the throne.
“Good heavens… my head…”
My temples throbbed. If the Duke of Bourgogne or the other great nobles heard this, what an enormous problem it would become. It would not have been strange for them to draw their swords against me immediately.
“Hmm, how very interesting.”
“Interesting? Magician Agpiel, you know perfectly well how troublesome this situation is.”
“Huhuhu. They are begging so earnestly—why not take this chance and try it? The King of the Elang Kingdom, the Margrave of Bellua, and the Count of the County of Campania. Ah—will you add the Duke of Aquitaine next? Those are truly majestic fiefs.”
“…Stop teasing me.”
I was already angry, and he was fanning the flames. Magician Agpiel. But whether I liked it or not, he seemed to find the situation genuinely amusing.
Even now, he was making light conversation beside me, calling out how happy the Duchess of Aquitaine must be at the thought of becoming queen, while she stood there looking startled and flustered by the scene.
“Ugh.”
With my head pounding, I moved quickly to suppress it.
THUD!
“Enough—calm yourselves!”
I stamped my foot hard against the floor and shouted at the nobles who were yelling.
But I must have hit it harder than I intended.
The ground, faintly, lurched for an instant—as though it were an earthquake.
RUMBLE!
“……?”
“?!”
Everyone fell silent, staring at me with strange expressions.
“Hm… effective, at least. Ahem.”
No matter how poor my control was, had I really been strong enough to shake the floor like that? I cleared my throat awkwardly and spoke to the nobles watching me.
“I understand what you are saying. However, it is impossible for me to take the king’s seat.”
“B-but!”
“In the present situation, if not Your Grace, then who…!”
The assembled nobles cried out as if wailing. Contrary to my own view, to the nobles of the eastern region, my taking the throne was a matter of survival.
When the Holy Empire’s Emperor invaded the kingdom, who was it that willingly dispatched troops?
Those three men who all claimed to be king? Or the Duke of Bourgogne, who had become regent and claimed he would lead the kingdom?
Neither.
Only the Margrave of Bellua—me—who guarded the southeastern borderlands, had raised an army and protected them.
To the eastern nobles, I was the representative who would defend their interests, and the true guardian who would fulfill the sacred duty of protection.
And then, as if by fate, I had married Your Grace, Duchess of Aquitaine, who carried the royal bloodline—making me, in their eyes, the best possible candidate for the throne.
Of course, that was their assertion, not one that suited my taste.
I waved my hands at the eastern nobles.
“If I were to usurp the throne for my own gain, what would become of a kingdom already steeped in chaos? I only wish to bring order to the confusion. There is a rightful king upon the throne—how could I dare to speak of such a thing!”
“Th-that…”
“No.”
Sensing their words were about to go on, I cut them off firmly.
“I will allow no more. I am the Margrave of Bellua who guards the borderlands, and as the husband of my wife, the Duchess of Aquitaine, I will fulfill my sacred duty to protect this kingdom. Do not tempt me further—and do not, beyond that, slight our King, His Majesty.”
-Ddiriring!
[You have made a firm declaration. The local nobles have understood your will. However, keep this in mind: the words of those in power are not always heard as intended.]
[Notification: Your claim to the throne disappears.]
---
The farce was over.
With my firm declaration, the once warm and cheerful banquet effectively came to an end. Everyone sipped their wine with guarded expressions, clustering together to whisper among themselves, and after watching them briefly, I left the hall.
I could stop them from speaking to my face, but I could not control what they said among themselves.
Hoping the incident had ended cleanly, I led my troops toward the royal castle early the next morning.
I had received hospitality for a short while, but if I did not want to be late for the coming victory ceremony and the Estates-General, I had to move diligently.
“Hmmm. There will not be any further trouble, will there?”
“What are you talking about?”
“About last night. Asking you to become king—what a shock. I am afraid that the Duke of Bourgogne will hear of it, Magician Agpiel. Fortunately, when they saw you speak so firmly, it seemed they understood your intentions.”
As we rode, I looked over the scenery, and the thought struck me. I asked Magician Agpiel.
Then—
“Well… I think differently.”
Magician Agpiel shrugged.
“They seemed to understand your words differently.”
“What?”
What was this now?
Lately, I did not even know why I kept finding myself startled and asking questions.
“After you left, I stayed and quietly listened to what they said. The eastern nobles were focusing on what you said about ‘bringing order to the confusion.’”
“Why would they? Of course I mean bringing order and restoring stability.”
“Which is precisely why they interpret ‘restoring order’ differently. You have your wife, do you not?”
“Maceania? Why her? What does she have to do with restoring order—why suddenly…?”
“Is it not her birth that matters? You said you would fulfill your sacred duty as her husband.”
“Ah…?”
So the eastern nobles had taken my words about correcting the chaos and restoring order to mean that I would settle the current crisis and raise the Duchess of Aquitaine as queen?
Was that really what was happening?
“Tsk. Sometimes you move so carefully that you cause people to misunderstand.”
“No… what are you—”
“They have already decided they want to put you on the throne. If you speak in circles like that, do you think they will understand? They will interpret everything to suit their own palate. Keukkeukkeuk. They took your words as humility—and understood them as acceptance.”
“…….”
Once again, I learned how difficult people’s minds were.
They said that the reputation I had built would constrain me, and now they were twisting my words into modesty and misunderstanding me!
“Still, do not feel too wronged. Your words will already be spreading in all directions as rumor. It is somewhat ambiguous, but… surely they will at least grasp that you have no interest in the throne.”
“That is a very comforting thing to say, is it not, Magician Agpiel?”
“Oh dear… no matter what you say to me, will anything change? Rather than that, think of what excuse you will give the Duke of Bourgogne when we arrive at the royal castle. Uhehehe.”
After saying that, Magician Agpiel laughed and rode forward.
He seemed to be enjoying this situation immensely. After all, he had supported a lord whose domain had been on the verge of ruin—and now that lord had become a ruler powerful enough to be raised as king. How could he not be pleased?
And because Magician Agpiel had no children, I probably looked like a beloved grandson to him.
But for me, trapped under this damned misunderstanding…
“Aaah…”
It was bleak.
Nothing ever went properly. Not since I had fallen into this cursed [Pangea Universalise].
All I could do was pray that this trip to the royal palace would go smoothly.
Please.
---
The road to the royal castle was not particularly difficult.
Though the kingdom had been swallowed by the fires of war, at least the lands ruled by the Duke of Bourgogne, and the central area near the capital, had escaped the worst of it.
Because of that, the roads leading to the royal castle still functioned properly, and they were crowded with countless merchant guilds and travelers.
And I—
“Waaah! It is the Margrave of Bellua!”
“O great Performer of Miracles—please, my hand…!”
“Your Grace, who performed healing miracles in the Duchy of Aquitaine! Please help me. My mother is dying!”
Thanks to the better-than-expected conditions, I ran into an unexpected problem. Countless crowds surged forward, desperate to see me.
Normally, no one would dare approach a noble to touch his face or body, but the fame I had built shattered all such customs.
In the chaos, I had appeared performing miracles; to ordinary people, I was a savior—the standard-bearer of God who would end this turmoil.
They wanted, by any means, to touch my hand—no, even the hem of my clothing—and receive a share of divine grace.
“Heh… you truly are absurdly popular. The royal castle is just ahead—are you going to stop here?”
“Meee. These rotten bastards. Scatter, meee! How dare you try to get a free(?) audience with our looord-nim, Mehr!”
“Lord. Shall we use the troops to disperse the crowd? It is dangerous. If there is an assassin among them…”
“That is right. I know you like comforting people, but the situation is not good right now. Let us follow Sir Biden’s advice, shall we?”
There was something strange mixed into that exchange, but overall they all seemed uneasy. In this era, how often would anyone have experienced crowds of this size?
With a bit of exaggeration, it was filled with people all the way up to the ridge beyond the horizon.
But I shook my head at their advice.
“No. We will stop for now. Do not disperse them—set up a camp here.”
“What? But—”
“I know what you are thinking. But if we carelessly lead troops to force the people to disperse, we do not know what might happen. If someone is hurt in the process, it is difficult to predict what kind of situation will unfold.”
If we dispersed them by force and a mass trampling incident occurred, it would be the worst possible outcome.
The Duke of Bourgogne and his faction were already eager to drag my name through the mud.
They would seize such an incident and tear at me like mad.
It was better not to invite needless trouble.
And besides—this enormous crowd…
“If things go well, this could become quite a useful pretext… and a shield.”
If the situation turned unfavorable, would not the crowd’s burning devotion toward me protect me in the end?
Was it not said that the people’s will was Heaven’s will?
In dealing with me, perhaps even the Duke of Bourgogne would be unable to move rashly, forced to consider public sentiment.
“We will camp here. And send a swift cavalryman as a messenger to the Regent Duke. Tell him that we are surrounded by a crowd and cannot move, and that we request assistance.”
With that in mind, I quickly gave my orders.
The Estates-General was approaching.
The battle of the real players had already begun.
