I Became a FortuneTeller in a Versatile World and Attracted Every Race
Chapter 51: Overstaying The Job Description
Asher kissed him back.
There was no careful decision behind it—only the sudden, sharp need to stop thinking, to replace the Matriarch’s fire-and-ruin future with something immediate and real. His hands fisted in the front of Adrian’s borrowed shirt and pulled. Adrian made a low sound of approval and answered with equal force, walking Asher backward until the edge of the bed caught them both and they went down in a tangle of limbs and half-removed clothing.
The kiss turned fiercer, teeth, breath, and the cedar smell of the blankets mixing with the faint metallic trace of vampire and the warmer human scent of Asher’s skin. Adrian’s fingers worked at Asher’s shirt until it was gone; Asher returned the favor with less patience, shoving fabric up and off until cool undead skin was under his palms. They rolled. Asher ended up over him, knees bracketing Adrian’s hips, and the shift in position drew a surprised, heated exhale from the Vampire Lord that went straight through Asher’s residual anxiety and burned it down to embers.
"You—" Adrian started.
Asher kissed the words off his mouth. "Stop talking."
For once, Adrian obeyed.
What followed was not gentle. It was intense, deliberate, and hungry in a way that had been building since the cell, since the blood, since the forest and the lion Feral and the impossible weight of a Phoenix’s vision.
Asher mapped the lines of Adrian’s body with hands and mouth—the healed scratches on his forearm, the plane of his chest, the sharp cut of his hip—until Adrian’s usual composure frayed into something rawer. When Asher’s palm pressed between his legs and found him already hard, Adrian’s head tipped back against the blankets with a sound that was half laugh and half curse.
"Bossy for a man who was pacing holes in the floor ten minutes ago."
"Still not talking," Asher muttered, and bit lightly at the hinge of Adrian’s jaw.
They stripped the rest of the way without ceremony. Skin against skin. Asher’s warmer body covering Adrian’s cooler one. The contrast pulled a shiver out of both of them. Asher reached for the small vial of oil he had noticed earlier among the room’s practical supplies and coated his fingers without looking away from Adrian’s face. He watched every flicker of expression as he pressed one slick finger into him, then another, working him open with a patience that contradicted the urgency in his pulse. Adrian’s eyes had gone almost fully dark. His hands gripped Asher’s shoulders hard enough to leave marks that would fade too quickly on human skin.
"Asher—"
"I’ve got you."
When he finally pushed inside, it was slow and complete, a single controlled motion that stole the air from both of them. Adrian’s body clenched around him, tight and hot despite the natural coolness of his skin. Asher held still, forehead pressed to Adrian’s, giving him time to adjust.
Then Adrian hooked a leg around Asher’s waist and pulled him deeper, and patience became a luxury neither of them wanted.
Asher set a rhythm that was hard without being careless—deep strokes that dragged against the place that made Adrian’s composure crack open. The Vampire Lord’s fingers dug into his back. His mouth found Asher’s shoulder, the side of his throat, anywhere he could reach without unseating the pace. When his fangs grazed skin without biting down, the threat of it alone sent a jolt of heat straight through Asher’s spine. He answered by driving harder, one hand braced on the mattress, the other wrapped around Adrian’s cock, stroking in time until Adrian was arching under him with none of his usual elegant control.
"Look at me," Asher said, voice rough.
Adrian did. Whatever he saw in Asher’s face made his eyes go wider, darker. He came first, with a broken sound that might have been Asher’s name, spilling over Asher’s fist and his own stomach while his body clamped down hard enough to pull Asher over the edge after him. Asher buried himself deep and followed, the release white-hot and almost painful in its intensity, emptying every remaining thought about prophecy and war into the simple, overwhelming fact of being inside someone who wanted him there.
They stayed locked together for several long breaths. Asher’s arms trembled. Adrian’s fingers traced idle, absent patterns on his back. The room smelled of sex and cedar and the faint iron edge of vampire.
Eventually Asher eased out and collapsed onto the mattress beside him, both of them a mess of sweat and tangled blankets. For a while neither spoke. The canopy beyond the window had gone a deeper green-gold, tipping toward night.
"Marcel is going to kill us both," Asher said to the ceiling.
Adrian’s chuckle was low and entirely unrepentant. "Only if you tell him."
Asher surprised himself by laughing too. The sound faded into the quiet. When it was gone, the weight of the earlier conversation crept back in, softer than before but still present.
"I don’t want to give it up," Asher said. He turned his head on the pillow to look at Adrian. "The gift. It’s like giving up a part of myself. I’ve hated what it brings—the claims, the hunting, the way everyone decides I’m a tool the moment they understand what I can do. But it’s still mine. Taking it out of me because other people might start wars over it feels like... like letting them win in a different way."
Adrian rolled onto his side, propping his head on one hand. His dark hair was a disaster. He looked more satisfied than Asher had ever seen him, and somehow more serious at the same time.
"Then don’t," he said. "You shouldn’t. You’re not responsible for the actions other people decide to take."
"Thousands could die."
"Men have gone to war for stupider things." Adrian’s mouth tilted. "I’ve lived long enough to watch them do it over insults, over borders that existed only on maps, over whose son married whose daughter. Your gift is powerful. It is not the first powerful thing in history to make greedy people reach for their armies. Don’t put the full weight of their choices on your shoulders."
Asher stared at the worn wooden ceiling beams. "She seemed very sure."
"Phoenixes see fragments. You said it yourself—futures move. And if your gift is dangerous enough to help start a war..." Adrian’s eyes gleamed in the dimming light. "Then I’m certain it’s dangerous enough to help stop one too. Keep it. Use it on your terms. That seems like a better answer than carving a hole in yourself because other people can’t control their ambitions."
Asher let the words sit.
They did not erase the Matriarch’s vision. They did not make the threat of nations moving like pieces on a board feel smaller. But they settled something in his chest that had been locked tight since the platform—the frantic belief that the only moral option was to cut
He flexed his bare left hand, the one that no longer carried Aaron’s claim, and then reached across the narrow space between them to rest his fingers against Adrian’s wrist.
"Temporary escort, huh?" he muttered.
Adrian’s smile was sharp and warm at the same time. "I may have overstayed the job description."
"Yeah," Asher said. "You did."
Adrian smiled but didn’t move his hand, he was glad he overstayed the job description.
