I Am Zeus
Chapter 394: Terms Under Pressure
Tohu did not settle when he agreed to talk.
He stood in the middle of the broken lane like a man who could end the conversation at will, and the nine did not pretend to be anything other than fools if they broke formation. The air remained thick with his presence, and behind them, the pressure of Sera’s recovery crept steadily forward through the interval.
Zeus kept his position at the front. "So say the terms in a manner that does not imply the old cage."
Tohu studied him for a moment before answering. "I take temporary custody of you for the duration it takes me to fully read the residual force you are carrying. Not Sera’s shelf. Not a public auction. My custody. During that time, the rest of your group remains under provisional protection from scavenger claims. Upon completion of the reading, we determine if that force can be sealed, trained, or allowed to remain active under restriction."
Athena did not hesitate in her reply. "Provisional protection is not freedom. And ’we decide’ sounds an awful lot like you decide."
"In the Continuum, the one who can enforce the decision determines it," Tohu said evenly. "I am being more honest than Sera was."
Poseidon shifted his trident against his shoulder, his expression tight. "You want Zeus alone. That is the first problem. We did not travel this far to surrender him in the hopes that the remainder of us receive polite consideration as a reward."
Tohu glanced at him. "If I desired the one body, I would already have it. The residual force is entangled with the remainder of you regardless of my wishes. Your group survival is a factor in the irregularity. That provides the remainder of you with value. Limited value. Do not confuse it with equality."
Hades exhaled, a humorless sound. "There it is. Always a ranking."
"Yes," Tohu said, entirely unbothered. "There is always a ranking. You are fortunate to be high enough on it to talk."
Sun Wukong placed his staff across his shoulders, bruised but grinning with characteristic sharpness. "And if your reading determines the force to be too dangerous? Do we have a voice then, or does the conversation conclude with a seal and a thank you?"
Tohu studied him. "If the force proves too dangerous, it is contained. I will not allow incomplete work on my side of an old assignment to devastate open Continuum traffic simply because all of you prefer pride to survival. That is non-negotiable."
Zeus felt the chaos beneath his skin stir at the words and flattened it with will. He hated the uncertainty of this, hated knowing the power was real, hated knowing both hunters fixed on him because of it, and hated the ignorance that made the terms feel like a blade offered handle-first.
"You continue to refer to it as residual force," Zeus said. "Speak plainly. What do you believe I am carrying?"
Tohu was silent for a breath. "A leftover thread of early creative authority from the design that became your world. My side of the work, not Jehovah’s. It should not be active in a lower-origin survivor after full judgment. The fact that it is active is the reason you are not just another escapee."
The lane fell still.
It was Athena who recovered first, though her voice was frayed. "You are saying part of what made our universe is still alive in him."
"In crude terms, yes," Tohu said. "That is why Sera wanted all of you, and why she wanted him most. That is why I am here in person, and why Jehovah is already irritated enough to place limits upon both of us."
Loki’s gaze sharpened. "Jehovah knows?"
"He knows enough to complicate this," Tohu said. "Which brings me to the second term. Whatever agreement we reach must withstand his scrutiny. No quiet disappearance. No private erasure. If I take Zeus for reading, it occurs where the process can be accounted for."
Hermes turned his attention back to the gathering bulk of darkness at their rear. "Accounted for by who, because Sera’s net is close enough that we may not have the luxury of process."
As if drawn by the words, a recovery signal brightened at their backs. And another. The net was no longer simply pressure. It was proximity enough for turns.
Odin’s grip tightened around Gungnir. "She is forcing the clock."
Tohu turned his gaze to the rear fog and muttered something under his breath that was probably a curse. "Of course she is. If she cannot keep the claim clean, she can still ruin anyone else’s."
Zeus did not take his eyes off Tohu. "Then we are finished with slow discussion. If your terms demand I be under temporary custody, the remainder of them accompanies me under the same protection. Not set aside. Not divided. Together."
Tohu’s jaw worked once. "That adds volume to the process."
"It also prevents us from being separated and used against each other," Zeus said. "That is the only condition I will entertain. And the reading occurs with our knowledge, not on us as livestock."
Athena added, "If the force truly proves that important, treat the carrier as a party to the problem, not the target of it."
For a long moment Tohu said nothing. The recovery signals at their backs brightened a second time, close enough now that individual movement patterns could be discerned in the structure of the lane. Sera’s people would soon be in visual range. After that, conversation would collapse under competing claim authority.
Tohu finally exhaled, sharply. "Together, then. Temporary custody under my protection for the full group. Reading of the residual force with Zeus aware of the process. No immediate transfer to Sera. No scavenger bidding. And if any of you attempt to use the arrangement to escape the moment the net eases, I personally end the agreement."
Poseidon cast a sidelong glance at Zeus. "It is still a cage. Just a different architect."
"I know," Zeus said. "But it is a cage we enter standing, with the remainder still at our sides. That is more than either hunter offered an hour ago."
Hades’s voice was low and bitter. "And if Jehovah decides this all too complicated?"
Tohu’s response held no comfort. "Then he intervenes, and all of us lose the ability to bargain. Which is another reason to finalize this before Sera forces a public collision in this lane."
A third flare of light cut through the dark at their backs. Voices followed, sharp Continuum command speech skittering through fog and broken architecture. Time was gone.
Athena regarded Zeus, not as a subordinate awaiting orders, but as an equal demanding the truth of his choice. "Are we doing this?"
Zeus felt the entirety of the run in his body at once - the seam, the blackout routes, the agent on the floor, the endless truth of being hunted for reasons larger than their survival. He hated the term. He accepted the reality.
"Yes," he said. "We accept his temporary protection. All of us. And we do not kneel."
Tohu nodded once, already turning toward the tightening pressure at their backs as if preparing to meet it. "Then stay close and do not test me. The agreement begins now."
Behind them, Sera’s recovery line finally entered visual range.
In front of them, Tohu raised his authority like a wall.
And the nine, still free only in the narrowest sense of the word, stepped under new claim before the old could pull them back by force.
