Chapter 375: The Message Moves

  • Next Chapter

The message left the territory of Sera without any banners or threats.

It was a compressed packet of intermediary language, without emotional inflection or undue claims moving through a chain of neutrality relays designed to make just such a passage easy. None of the relays on the chain opened the message fully, though each marked the passage and the next passed it on. Not that one needed to open such a message to know it was unusual in the Outer Continuum, a notification in regard to a residual creative authority in a concluded lower design had already been enough of one for some.

The third relay gave it a cursory pattern check before releasing it, and the fifth made a quiet copy of the routing header and allowed it to go on. No one intercepted, no one delayed, just watched it move as smaller predators often watch a larger predator cross the land.

By the time it drew near the outer markers of Tohu’s last acknowledged sphere of attention it had already formed a thin wake of secondary interest.

Sera had expected as much.

Inside the holding court the nine survivors felt little of the passage the message took.

What they did feel however, was the change in the air around the territory where they were contained.

Zeus was the first to note it as a shift in pressure, not the weight of the lower institutions but a number of light touches against the boundary of Sera’s coverage. Athena followed next to cross the court and stand close to him before announcing her own conclusion.

"Probes," she said. "More than before. Different angles."

Poseidon leaned both hands on the shaft of his trident and glared toward the invisible boundary. "They are getting bolder."

"They are getting curious," Odin corrected. His single eye remained half-lidded, watching something beyond normal sight. "Curiosity is a more dangerous thing. Boldness can be broken, curiosity multiplies."

Hades stood away from the main group, the green light low and even on his skin. He had said little of the last exchange with Sera. When he did speak, the words came out flat. "Let them multiply. As long as they remain outside, it is still someone else’s problem."

Sun Wukong spun his staff in a slow arc and let it rest against his shoulder. "For now. I have seen ’for now’ end badly."

Kratos said nothing. He had taken up a position near the edge of the usable space and remained there, watching the density changes come with the patience of one who had learned new cages always tested their bars.

Loki observed the others with mild interest. "She sent something. That is why the air tastes different. Our keeper has decided to pull a thread and it is pulling back."

Zeus was silent to this, he had already come to the same conclusion. Sera did not appear to him to be the type to move things without reason. If the pressure of people around her territory was increasing it was because she had decided to make a claim towards the existence of something capable of answering.

"We stay inside the radius," he said. "No demonstrations. No answering probes. If it is conversation between higher powers we do not insert ourselves until we understand the language."

Hermes gave a short, humorless breath. "We already are the language. That is the problem."

Inside a higher chamber of her territory Sera stood before an extended projection of layered traffic routes. Veyth remained at a respectful distance, slate in hand.

"The packet has cleared the seventh relay," he reported. "Secondary copies exist. At least two minor interests have logged the header. No direct challenge has formed."

"They will not challenge a notification," Sera said. "They will wait to see who answers it."

She moved one hand through the projection, expanding the region around Tohu’s last recorded sphere. There had been little activity on it in a long while, Tohu did not hold dense court structures in the way Yahweh’s side preferred. His attention moved and his influence took place in strange places and then thinned out again. Sending a message into that kind of territory was like throwing a stone into deep water. The ripples would eventually find something. What returned was the danger.

"Increase boundary screen another degree. If a real response forms, I want the first contact to occur on my terms."

Veyth noted the order. "And the nine?"

"They remain where they are. If Tohu’s side wishes a closer look they will have to look through me."

The message completed its final relay transition and crossed into the outer marker zone associated with Tohu.

For a time it simply waited, held in the receiving lattice of something that had not seen much use in ages. Laws of old, older than most active Houses brushed against it, reading the formal structure, the restrained claims, the careful refusal to demand.

Then the lattice accepted.

Somewhere deeper within this spare, ill-documented sphere of attention the content of the message was unfurled before a presence that had not thought about a certain discarded childhood assignment in a long, long while. The information was limited, nine coherent survivors. One of them carrying traces of early creative authority and still currently under foreign coverage. Open for consideration should interest be known.

No threats.

No urgency.

Only the fact.

The presence that received it did not react with alarm, nor sentiment, but with attention slow and reluctant and sharp enough to cut.

A reply did not take place immediately. What took place instead was the consideration.

Back in the holding court the pressure brushes against the boundary of Sera grew slightly more focused. Not stronger. Clearer. As if those who were testing their edges had stopped casting wide nets and begun aiming.

Athena raised her head. "The pattern changed."

Zeus felt it as well. The difference between random probes and directed interest was a subtle thing, but it was there. Somewhere beyond the coverage that kept them off the open board the message had landed.

Poseidon’s mouth tightened. "So the stone hit water."

"Yes." Zeus said.

Hades finally turned from the far edge of the court. The green light under his skin flickered once. "Then we are no longer only her inventory. We are becoming a subject of conversation."

Loki’s smile was thin. "Congratulations to us all."

Outside the holding radius and across the carefully screened boundary of Sera’s territory the Outer Continuum continued its vast indifferent traffic. But in one area of old attention a long-standing interest had been disturbed by the simple announcement that a fragment of abandoned work existed and was being held by someone else.

The message had moved.

The first answer had not yet returned.

But the board had already changed.
