Third Person POV

Hogwarts.

...

...

"Come on, gather these things for me...", the eleven-year-old girl's voice echoed.

As Heloisa woke up in the room she shared with three other eleven-year-old Slytherin girls. She looked at the two pure-blood girls ordering the other one, who was a half-blood.

She simply watched without saying anything, getting ready for the day.

She had already witnessed that same scene more than once the previous day, while the other girl merely nodded timidly and did everything they asked.

'This was bizarre...'

She knew that two of her roommates were pure-bloods from the noble Parkinson and Selwyn families, while Heloisa and the other girl, Sabrina Buchocz, were considered inferior for not being pure-bloods.

Since the very first night they had arrived in that room, they had endured the looks of superiority those two girls directed at both of them, especially at Heloisa, who was simply a Muggle-born in the House of Serpents.

It all began the previous day, when they had finished arranging the room. The two girls immediately called Heloisa and Sabrina over.

"Well, as you heard, we're pure-bloods. I'm Monique Parkinson," one of them began, while the other stepped forward.

"I'm Octavia Selwyn, and we make the rules in this room, understood?" She waited for an answer immediately afterward.

Heloisa and Sabrina exchanged a glance for a moment.

"We didn't hear anything about that. As far as I know, we're all equal here...", Heloisa replied, displeased with the direction the conversation was taking.

"So you actually have the nerve to say that, Mudblood? We know you were protected by that half-blood during tonight's meeting. That Severus Snape. Everyone was talking about how he'd changed. My fourth-year cousin told me he won't survive after making enemies of the Lestranges," the girl said with a mocking look.

"From what I saw, Severus was the one who put them in their place, not the other way around. Or am I wrong?" Heloisa shot back in the same tone, without the slightest hesitation.

The girls looked at each other. "Let's just say he got lucky..." Parkinson mocked after a brief silence. "But he'll be put in his place soon enough. Pure-bloods are superior to you half-bloods and... especially you, Muggle-born. Mudblood."

It was at that moment that an icy wave swept through the room. Suddenly, the entire room froze.

The girls, who until then had been full of mockery, widened their eyes in fright as they felt their skin prickle from the sudden drop in temperature.

"Who's doing this?" Octavia Selwyn said.

At that instant, they remembered that the air had frozen before as well, when Rabastan Lestrange had confronted Heloisa right in front of them.

"Stop it!" the other one, Monique Parkinson, said.

Now they were afraid. There was no change in Heloisa's eyes, but she could see Sabrina beginning to tremble beside her, while the other two pure-blood girls froze with fear.

"I'm not doing anything," Heloisa replied, crossing her arms while appearing completely indifferent to the three girls shivering from the cold.

The two girls took a step back, moving away from her. "I'm going to tell the prefects what you're doing. Half-blood, stop this right now!" Parkinson said.

But there was no confidence left in her voice. Only fear.

"As I said, I'm not doing anything. Either way, I'm not going to listen to you. I'm going to lie down in my bed. Don't bother me." That was all Heloisa said.

She simply lay down, hiding the tears welling up in her eyes. She hadn't liked Slytherin House at all. The people there were obsessed with judging one another by their blood status.

They all called her Mudblood, an offensive and disrespectful name for people like her.

Even Severus had said he hadn't expected her to end up in this House. Just as he had told her she shouldn't have come to Slytherin, he had also given her a few warnings about the place.

She had already seen very well what they were capable of. After the Sorting, everyone had been gathered together, and she had simply been placed before them all as a Muggle-born, without receiving any kind of welcome.

It was as though she were an intruder, someone who wasn't welcome. She had no choice but to lie down and try to forget everything as a few tears rolled down her face.

The following morning, she completely ignored all of her roommates, only noticing that Sabrina was already doing chores for the two pure-blood girls early in the morning, such as organizing their school supplies.

'We haven't even received our class schedules yet... Why are they making her do this?' Heloisa looked on in disgust. She didn't like it one bit. The girls were getting ready, brushing their hair while laughing at the girl named Sabrina...

She said nothing. It wasn't her problem either... right? As long as they didn't bother her.

With that, she went to the bathroom, finished her morning routine, and then headed outside with the intention of going to the Great Hall. But first, she found Severus after asking Articuno to show her the way to him, already knowing that he had left.

Later, the classes were enjoyable.

First came Herbology, then Transfiguration, with Professor McGonagall appearing from a cat sitting on top of her desk, making everyone forget to breathe for a moment.

Everyone thought it was amazing.

It was at the end of Transfiguration class that everything started to go wrong. Articuno had remained on her shoulder, and she was called over by some of the other Slytherin children to talk. She went out of curiosity, since she had been alone the entire time.

She wanted to make friends... She also wanted to share the magical world with other children her own age.

The pure-blood girls gathered together with the other boys and girls, separating all the half-bloods and Muggle-borns into one corner, making sure no professor saw them.

She immediately realized that something was wrong.

They said the older students had ordered them to do it. They assigned specific tasks that they were expected to carry out for the pure-bloods and said that no one was allowed to tell any professor about it.

Heloisa didn't like that at all. She simply turned her back and walked away.

"Let her go, Mudblood. Soon she'll learn her place." The voices echoed behind her.

They were boys with clearly malicious intentions, even mocking her clothes, saying they were secondhand Muggle clothing.

They obviously weren't the worst clothes. Her parents could afford decent things, but they were nothing like the clothes those pure-blood boys and girls wore.

She found Severus some time later in a terrible mood, trying not to cry, and that made her feel much more relieved. At least he wasn't like the other Slytherins.

It was fun.

He found the two Hufflepuff girls from the train, and they went to the kitchens. She loved the experience and was startled when all the house-elves suddenly started jumping all over Severus after he did something...

The memory made her laugh now, seeing all those tiny little creatures hopping around him, even though she had cried in horror at the time.

Later, after the incident in the kitchens, they went to the lake. Heloisa loved the sight of the two phoenixes with the group, and she knew she was seeing more of the magical world than her pure-blood classmates, who were all gathered somewhere mocking Muggle-borns or ordering half-bloods to work for them.

After that, they returned to class, but not before meeting Headmaster Dumbledore up close. Heloisa liked Dumbledore. She thought he was very kind.

In any case, the classes continued. Severus found them during dinner. Earlier, he had left Articuno with Heloisa, saying he needed to take care of a few things, and left the Great Hall beforehand.

She didn't understand why, but accepted it, even though she also left shortly afterward.

When she arrived at the common room, she found Severus sitting calmly while reading, with a girl beside him. She could also see several students talking about him from the opposite side of the room.

It was the group of seventh-years, with that Lestrange and many of the others from the previous night.

It was amusing. A little funny in Heloisa's mind. All those students seemed to be against Severus, yet he simply didn't care. At the same time, none of those groups had the courage to go and say anything to him directly, just as the girls in their dormitory had done.

She joined him, and he kindly conjured an armchair just as comfortable as his own, enough to make the girl sitting beside him on the sofa a little jealous. She sat down and tried to imitate him, also trying to learn more about magic and become like him.

It was then that a fifth-year prefect appeared accompanied by Professor Slughorn. Heloisa immediately realized that something was wrong. Severus was called over by the worried Head of House, and they headed to the hospital wing.

Severus didn't say anything else. He simply asked her to return to the dormitory with Articuno, and she obeyed. She lay down on her bed and opened one of the books to read, since she was interested in learning magic.

She couldn't read for very long before the door opened and the two girls walked in, with Sabrina carrying their belongings.

When they saw her still awake, they turned their attention to her. "I heard your little friend is in trouble. The gossip is already spreading," said the arrogant Selwyn girl from the previous night.

Heloisa couldn't hide her concern. "What do you mean by that?" she asked cautiously this time.

The girl smiled even more maliciously. "Well, it seems some Gryffindor students were near the entrance to Slytherin and got beaten up by your friend. He's in serious trouble."

"Wait... Gryffindor ambushed him?" She had already noticed the rivalry between Gryffindor and Slytherin, but she hadn't expected Severus to become a victim of it.

"Yes. Four sixth-year students, apparently," Parkinson replied this time.

"But wait... if he beat up four Gryffindor students who tried to hurt him near the entrance to our common room, isn't that a good thing?" Heloisa asked, confused.

Because of that, the girls exchanged somewhat puzzled glances. In a way, it really was a good thing that someone had taught Gryffindor a lesson. At that moment, they seemed much more focused on seeing Severus fail or be punished than on the rivalry between the Houses itself.

"Y-Yeah... but even so, he won't get away with it. He could even be expelled!" Octavia Selwyn said.

Despite her words, her voice no longer sounded so confident. It was as though she was trying to find some reason to justify her own celebration.

"Y-Yeah... that's true," the other one, Monique Parkinson, also began to speak, sounding just as awkward. "Snape's getting too full of himself. It's good that he learns his place, that half-blood."

At that moment, the air froze once again. The two girls immediately shrank back and ran to their beds.

"Stop making it freeze like this!" they said. Even Sabrina, who hadn't said a single word and seemed to act more like the other two girls' servant, also ran beneath the blankets to protect herself from the cold.

"What do you think?" Heloisa murmured to Articuno.

As always, the bird didn't respond. A short time later, it simply disappeared.

She couldn't sleep properly after that. Only after some time did sleep finally come despite her worries, and even then, she woke up late.

'Come on, gather these things for me...'

So she woke up that morning to the girls ordering Sabrina around again. The girl simply obeyed, afraid of the retaliation she would face if she refused, which Heloisa found strange. What could first-year students even do? Maybe the older students could get involved, but she thought the whole thing was terribly unfair.

She also woke up without Articuno. She didn't know what had happened, but the bird hadn't slept with her that night. That could only mean that something had happened.

When she looked up, she saw Sabrina once again doing chores for the two girls purely because they wanted her to, just like the day before, while the two of them seemed to thoroughly enjoy watching it.

Heloisa said nothing. She simply got ready, leaving the two girls gossiping while Sabrina worked for them.

She even felt sorry for Sabrina, who apparently had no choice but to obey.

Even though she regretted being sorted into Slytherin after discovering what the House was really like, Heloisa also understood why the Sorting Hat had placed her there.

She had ambition. She wanted to become someone powerful, just as Severus had shown himself to be from the very first time she saw him.

She wanted to learn magic that way. Perhaps the Hat had interpreted that very desire to reach the pinnacle. After all, from what she had seen through the girl's memories, to the Sorting Hat, Severus had displayed abilities that only a small fraction of adult wizards could reproduce, and she was completely different from him.

Perhaps that was exactly why the Hat had given her Slytherin as an option.

If she truly wished to reach that level because of her ambition, then that House would be the most suitable choice, completely ignoring her blood status.

Even so, Heloisa had to be grateful that she at least had Articuno to protect her, along with Severus, who feared no one.

So, thanks to the icy gusts that appeared from time to time, those two idiotic girls no longer bothered her that morning, afraid of the freezing air. Although Heloisa already knew they had reported it to some prefect or older student the day before.

They still let out a few snickers, perhaps because she was still worried about Severus. After all, she immediately left anxiously, hoping to find him or at least learn what had happened.

After getting ready, she arrived at the common room and was about to leave when a much older girl approached her.

She had a cold expression. "You're Heloisa Vittorini, right?" she asked.

Heloisa immediately became cautious, recognizing that the girl had to be a seventh-year because of the badge on her chest.

"I'm Berta Rowle, a prefect. I heard you've been using magic to freeze the air. Your roommates have been complaining about it." The girl's tone was harsh.

"I... I can't do that. Can you?" Heloisa shot back immediately.

The girl looked surprised by the response and, at the same time, frustrated. She herself certainly wasn't capable of doing something on that scale.

If she could freeze the air around her like that, she would practically be a queen within Slytherin, displaying that magic before everyone to intimidate them.

Yet somehow, that Mudblood girl possessed an ability capable of intimidating even pure-blood students.

"Don't lie!"

"I didn't do it. If you want, you can take the matter to the Headmaster." Heloisa replied exactly as Severus had instructed her.

If something like this happened, he had told her to seek out someone older or even a professor. That seemed to put the girl in a small dilemma.

"Listen here, Muggle-born." The student completely dropped her casual tone. Her voice turned cold. "I don't know what you're doing, but you need to understand your place. You're in Slytherin, and you're nothing but a Mudblood. You have no right to intimidate pure-blood girls who are far above your status."

'That word again... Those insults...' Heloisa thought. 'Are we less than human to them?'

The older student took another step forward, interrupting Heloisa's thoughts. "Do you understand that your chances of continuing to study in the magical world are very slim if you make enemies here?"

"But I didn't do anything! They want me to do ridiculous chores as if I were their servant. If that's what they want, then get a house-elf, not me or the other girl they're bullying in that dormitory!" Heloisa burst out.

The prefect stared at her. Although she seemed surprised by the comparison to house-elves, she merely scoffed and moved on with a look that made it clear Heloisa should know her place.

But Heloisa stopped her. "Wait." The girl stopped, and Heloisa continued. "Do you know anything about Severus Snape?"

The prefect seemed amused by the question, displaying a faint smile. "Oh, him? I heard he's about to be expelled. From what I've heard, he raised both hands at the Headmaster with some filthy, disgusting Muggle gesture, something fitting for the likes of your kind. He told the Headmaster to go fuck himself and said he didn't care if he got expelled. Looks like the idiot is finally in trouble."

Heloisa was speechless. "He did... what?"

She practically shouted, completely frozen. Without wasting another second, she ran to the Great Hall, hoping to find Severus.

But he wasn't there. She remained there for a while before leaving the Great Hall. She could see the Hufflepuff girls wearing confused and worried expressions.

Everyone was talking about the same thing. Severus had supposedly told the Headmaster to go fuck himself right to his face. He had also completely ignored his own Head of House and even Professor McGonagall.

There were even rumors that Minerva had nearly breathed fire that morning because she was so furious. No one knew exactly what had happened.

Some claimed the Headmaster had personally taken Severus to the Ministry of Magic and locked him up. Others insisted he was in the Headmaster's office while several documents were being signed to make his expulsion official.

No one had seen Severus in the Slytherin dormitory. They said he hadn't even returned there to sleep.

Even so, Avery told a different story, claiming he had seen Severus using a phoenix to return to the dormitory that morning. Heloisa no longer knew whom to believe.

As she walked through the castle, she overheard the students' conversations, and even the portraits were talking about it.

"Severus isn't going to be expelled!" she shouted at one of the portraits gossiping about it, startling the paintings in the middle of their discussion.

"What an ill-mannered child," they said.

"Shut up!" she shouted before running to the library.

After failing to find Severus there, she truly began to worry. What if he had been expelled? She couldn't bear to remain at that school without Severus.

He was practically the only good thing about Slytherin. He was the one who protected her. She couldn't imagine her life in that place without him.

Just then, someone tapped her on the shoulder. Heloisa jumped in surprise.

When she turned around, she found nothing, but she knew it was the invisible Articuno.

"Articuno?" she murmured as the invisible bird nodded and gently nuzzled Heloisa's head.

"Articuno... how are you here?" she asked, showing a worried smile after finally having her by her side again. "Tell me... is Severus okay? He wasn't expelled?" Heloisa asked, her childish voice filled with anxiety.

Articuno let out a soft chirp. To her, that was all the confirmation she needed that Severus was fine.

"Thank you... what a relief." She let out a relieved sigh.

She needed to talk to Severus. She wanted to tell him what the seventh-year prefect had said about the strange freezing air.

After that, she went to class and saw the group of pure-blood girls arrive. The two of them merely glanced briefly in her direction before lifting their chins and continuing on.

Neither of them bothered her. Surprisingly, Sabrina, the half-blood who shared her dormitory, approached her.

"Can I sit here?" she asked cautiously.

"Of course." Heloisa said with a brighter smile than she had worn all morning after learning that everything was all right.

Transfiguration class began. Professor McGonagall, however, seemed furious for some reason.

"Professor, is it true that Severus Snape was expelled?" one of those girls immediately asked, throwing a glance at Heloisa and winking, as though it were the funniest thing in the world since Heloisa had refused to obey them.

The professor narrowed her eyes. She noticed exactly whom the student was looking at.

"No, Miss Parkinson. Mr. Snape was not expelled. Although I'm surprised you've already heard about what happened, and I'm sure you also know what he did, the Headmaster and I would rather not discuss the matter any further. I hope no one else brings it up for the time being. It is something that we, the professors, and the Headmaster will resolve among ourselves. It is not a subject for gossip around the school." She paused briefly.

"I will also be deducting ten points from Slytherin for your obvious attempt to make your classmate suffer."

The girl was completely stunned. "Wait, Professor..."

"Another five points for trying to play the innocent." McGonagall was not pleased at all that morning.

The students stared at the girl in shock after she had just cost Slytherin fifteen points. Parkinson, meanwhile, remained silent after that, shrinking into herself.

Before turning her attention back to the lesson, McGonagall looked at Heloisa and gave her a subtle wink.

Heloisa was surprised. The professor had deducted points because of her.

She had seen right through Parkinson's intentions. Heloisa didn't know what to say.

"How do you do it?" a voice asked beside her as the professor began the lesson.

Heloisa looked at Sabrina. "What do you mean?"

"How do you manage to deal with them?" It was obvious that Sabrina wasn't happy at all with the way she was being treated in Slytherin.

"Well... I simply refuse to become what they want us to be." Sabrina gave a slight shrug.

"Of course... I also have help. Without her, I'd probably already be in serious trouble," Heloisa replied.

Sabrina fell silent after that, and Heloisa noticed the girl's curious gaze lingering on her.

Maybe...

Maybe she had been wrong to think she wouldn't make any friends in that House.

Perhaps she could trust that half-blood girl.

Perhaps Severus could help her too.

With that thought in mind, she turned her attention back to the lesson, hoping to find Severus at lunchtime.
