HP – Jon Arctic as Severus Snape!
Chương 41: Chapter 40 - Lily Evans 01.
[Chapter Size: 3300 Words.]
Third Person POV
Hogwarts.
...
...
Lily was having the strangest start to a year she had ever had in her entire life.
It had started strangely, even when she believed it would be a peaceful year, progressing as it should. Her parents took her to King's Cross Station and accompanied her to Platform 9¾.
As they said goodbye, her mother, as always, asked her to enjoy the year and continue shining at the school of magic.
Lily knew she was a popular girl at Hogwarts. The number of letters she had received at home during the holidays was proof of that. There were messages from her friends and even declarations from Potter, who had practically filled her mailbox throughout the entire summer.
Marlene had also visited her for the third time, coming to her house during the holidays ever since first year. She had finally received permission to go to Lily's house and spend a week with her family. Her parents adored her, as always, asking countless questions about the magical world and about how Lily was doing at Hogwarts.
They treated her in a very different way from how they treated her former friend.
That made her think months earlier... When she returned from Hogwarts, to Lily's surprise, her parents had seemed almost relieved when she mentioned that Severus would not be coming back home with them, that he would not be appearing at their house during the holidays, and that the two of them were no longer speaking.
She was surprised when her parents simply let out a sigh of relief. 1
"It's alright, dear. We're with you. We knew from the beginning that this friendship wouldn't last long and would break apart one day... You know, Severus isn't someone like you... You've always been different, but we knew you liked being his friend," her mother said. She seemed careful when saying that; her mother was clearly implying that Severus was... poor, perhaps?
Lily had already expected Petunia to be happy about it, but not her parents. They were acting strangely. She had never imagined that they looked down on Severus in some way. Perhaps they had simply hidden it very well. 1
Severus had never seemed like someone suitable in their eyes. They had always turned a blind eye to the sight of the skinny boy, wearing second-hand clothes, the son of the drunk Snape, walking beside their daughter, and the neighborhood's looks had never been the kindest when directed at Severus, often carrying a certain pity for her whenever they were seen together. 1
Lily had always known they were cautious about Severus as well and that, from time to time, they would make subtle remarks. Even so, she had not expected that reaction when they found out the friendship was over. 1
After hearing her mother in the car that day, she sighed. "It's alright, Mom. Sev-Snape is no longer that little boy I met when I was eleven."
She let out a weary sigh. A sigh that showed just how exhausted she was with the whole matter. Tired of trying to save Severus from himself and from the path he insisted on following, growing more and more filled with shadows.
A path that brought him closer and closer to the future Death Eaters. How could she accept being friends with someone who followed an ideology that wished to exterminate people like her? Muggle-borns.
She had once loved Severus like a brother, but she loved that boy, that boy who had shown her the magical world.
She knew Severus treated her differently, but it was only her. When it came to other Muggle-borns, Severus never seemed to care. He himself used the term "Mudblood" in search of his friends' approval, against other students like her.
And when the incident by the lake happened, he had merely revealed what he truly thought. In the end, to him, she was nothing more than a Mudblood.
So, with that idea firmly rooted in her mind, Lily decided to end whatever relationship she might still have had with Severus once and for all.
And she spent the entire summer that way.
And even if everything had ended, it wasn't as though they hadn't broken apart before. The two had been drifting apart since third year. Starting in fourth year, Lily began avoiding him whenever she could. When they met, it was almost always Severus who sought her out, never the other way around.
The summer passed peacefully. She spent time with her family, replied to letters from her Gryffindor friends, and even threw all of Potter's letters into the fire, despite his persistence until the very last day of the holidays.
She also spent most of her days in Cokeworth, walking through the streets, going to the market, or strolling with her mother. Sometimes, her eyes would involuntarily drift toward that specific street, Spinner's End. She could see the Snape house among the other buildings, dark and silent as always.
She heard nothing about Severus. She had not seen him during almost the entire holiday, except in the first few days, when she thought she spotted him wandering through the streets. Severus never sought her out that summer.
But that didn't matter. She didn't care about Severus Snape anymore.
Her parents seemed quite relieved about that. Petunia, when she found out, merely gave a faint smile. Perhaps out of revenge, perhaps because of everything that had happened between her and Severus.
"About time you got rid of that trash. That thing had no future whatsoever and was only dragging you down," Petunia said with a satisfied smile.
There was no warmth in those words. No attempt at reconciliation. Just a way to mock Severus and rejoice in his downfall. After all, she seemed to have been waiting for that ever since she stopped speaking to Lily.
Lily didn't know whether to feel happy or sad hearing those words. After all, Petunia had never changed the way she treated Lily. She had congratulated Lily, but only a few days later, she was acting as she always had, looking down on her.
Coming out of her thoughts, she heard her mother once again asking her to shine at school, as she did every year.
Standing before the train, Lily let her eyes wander through the crowd.
Perhaps she was curious. Perhaps she was searching, without admitting it to herself, for the skinny boy she had known since she was nine years old. But she found nothing.
Then someone approached her and her parents. It was none other than Potter. With an irritatingly wide smile on his face. 1
"Hello, Mr. and Mrs. Evans. Hello, Miss Evans." He spoke cheerfully, as though they were old friends.
Lily rolled her eyes. But she was even more surprised when she saw her parents raise their eyebrows with interest.
"So you're the James Potter our daughter talks so much about?" Lily nearly choked at her mother's excited voice. It was an enthusiasm they had never shown toward Severus. 1
In any case, Potter cracked a joke here, another there, earning a few laughs from her parents and making a good impression.
It wasn't the first time they had spoken. Potter had done that several times before just to annoy Lily. The difference was that while Severus always seemed gloomy and uncomfortable around her parents whenever James showed up and did this, James always seemed completely at ease.
Perhaps that was exactly why they liked him so much. James found Sirius and said goodbye, and sometime later Lily did the same, giving her parents one last hug before heading for the train.
She stored her luggage, adjusted her uniform, and pinned on her prefect badge. Then she boarded, walked through the corridors until she found her friends.
The compartment was already full of them, to the point that there was no room for any Marauder to show up and bother them.
Sitting down among her friends, Lily finally relaxed.
Soon they were talking, laughing, and sharing all the gossip they had accumulated over the summer.
"And how are you doing, Lily?" Mary didn't fail to flash her a smile.
"Hm? Again? I've already told you everything I did."
"I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about Snivellus," she replied with a giggle.
Lily raised an eyebrow. She knew they were mocking Severus, but this time she didn't defend him.
"I don't know." As soon as she answered, she realized all her friends had stopped talking to focus on her.
"Really? No desperate attempt to patch things up? No dramatic scene like at the Gryffindor entrance? Not even one night in Cokeworth?" Marlene asked with a mischievous smile.
"Coming from that greasy Slytherin who was always chasing after you? I wouldn't be surprised if he tried kneeling in front of your house," Dorcas Meadowes commented, also mocking him.
She saw Mary Macdonald, Marlene McKinnon, and Dorcas Meadowes laughing. Only Emmeline Vance and Alice were calmer, despite not being fond of Severus.
Lily merely shook her head. She didn't defend him, but she wasn't going to lie or mock Severus either. "We just don't talk anymore. I didn't hear anything about him all summer, after the first day. And honestly, it's fine that way."
Whatever Severus was doing, it wasn't her problem anymore.
"That's good, Lily! You know how much that worried us. You're finally out of that disgusting Slytherin's clutches, you've finally come to your senses!" Mary replied in a serious and satisfied tone.
Lily noticed all her friends looking at her with approval.
"At least you won't go through what I went through," Mary added in a darker tone.
Lily raised an eyebrow. "What? No. I don't think Severus would do that to me."
She dismissed the possibility immediately. Severus would never do something like what Mulciber had done to Mary.
"Lily, do you really think he's still that friend of yours from when you were nine?" Dorcas asked. "Forget him. He's not that child you always told us he was anymore. You were only using that as an excuse... You know he's going to become a Death Eater. He's going to hunt people like us."
Dorcas Meadowes was also Muggle-born, although her father was a Muggle wizard, and she spoke with conviction.
Lily tried to find an answer. But she couldn't. Because Severus really was following that path.
"Besides, it'll be better for you. Trust me, he's awful." Mary didn't bother hiding her disgust.
Lily was surprised by her friends' cruelty. I mean, they had always been prone to making nasty comments about Severus. They had always advised Lily to stay as far away as possible from her old Slytherin friend. 1
But this time, they seemed genuinely happy about the separation. And some of the comments were enough to surprise even her. 1
Still, she shouldn't care. So she merely shrugged. "Whatever. I don't exactly know what you mean by that, but it doesn't matter." She placed a book on her lap and adjusted her skirt.
"Oh, you know exactly what we're talking about," Mary insisted. "Are you really going to say you never noticed that Severus liked you in that way?" She flashed a mischievous smile.
"Just imagine it, Lily Evans, the queen of Gryffindor, dating that walking pile of potions, always smelling like spoiled ingredients. Imagine having to kiss those crooked, yellow teeth."
The remark made Lily stare at her in horror. "What are you talking about? Of course Severus and I never had that kind of relationship."
Lily replied immediately. She wasn't foolish either. She knew Severus sometimes showed jealousy when it came to other boys. At times, it had even been irritating.
I mean, there had been a time when she imagined the two of them together. Back in those days when they were just a little boy and a little girl from Cokeworth, she believed they would cross the magical world together, become powerful wizards, and remain side by side forever.
But that was only the dream of a nine-year-old girl. As the years passed, even during their first years at Hogwarts, Lily realized things would not follow that path.
Especially when Severus began surrendering more and more to the influence of those Slytherins he called friends.
A few months earlier, even before the incident by the lake, when she questioned him about what had happened to Mary and he responded with nothing but a laugh, as if the use of Dark Magic against her were no big deal, Lily knew they were destined to break apart that already fragile friendship.
The incident by the lake had merely been the final straw. The perfect excuse for them to never speak to each other again.
"Stop it, please. I don't want to talk about this anymore." Lily said irritably.
"Stop it, Mary. Doctor Miss Potter is being very generous and doesn't want to talk about things from the past." Marlene said in a teasing tone.
Lily immediately shot her a murderous glare. The girls burst into laughter, obviously teasing her about the fact that James Potter had spent his entire school life since third year trying to convince her to date him.
"And did you at least answer any of his letters?" Mary asked. "Lupin told me Potter is feeling pretty confident now that you've broken things off with Snivellus." She finished the sentence laughing along with the others.
Lily merely shook her head. Then she opened a book and tried to ignore them.
But she couldn't help thinking about how she would deal with things from now on. She and Severus were no longer friends. They no longer spoke. They were heading toward opposite sides of a war that seemed increasingly inevitable.
A war in which she intended to protect Muggle-borns from the discrimination that she, her friends, and so many others had suffered for more than five years at Hogwarts.
Even if one day she had to face that boy who had become increasingly dark and angry. She would face him.
Then the compartment door opened. "Lily, we need to meet with the Head Boy and Head Girl and start patrolling."
Lupin appeared outside. Lily immediately nodded. She took the bag from her lap and placed it beside her.
"Keep this for me."
She stood up while adjusting her robes and the prefect badge pinned opposite the Gryffindor emblem.
Then she quickly said goodbye to her friends and left the compartment. The meeting was simple.
She had already been a prefect since the previous year, so she wasn't nervous. She spent most of the time listening to the instructions from the Head Boy and Head Girl and observing the other students gathered there.
As always, she received a few looks of disdain from the Slytherin students. Nothing out of the ordinary. Among them was Regulus Black, Sirius's younger brother and now a fifth-year prefect.
He seemed a little nervous, from what Lily could tell. It was his first time. Even so, he didn't dare look directly at her.
He maintained the same distant expression and the same silent contempt that Slytherins usually displayed.
The meeting began.
Lily was happy to see that Frank was one of the Head Prefects. The Head Girl was a Ravenclaw student, Beatrice Langley, quite responsible and respected by everyone.
After the meeting, the prefects set off on their first patrols. Lily headed straight for a Hufflepuff carriage from which a suspicious amount of noise was coming.
She already expected to find Iris Scamander in the middle of it. The girl had a well-known reputation. She was always laughing and talking loudly, breaking rules and losing points for her house without showing the slightest regret. She was almost like a rebellious princess within Hogwarts, and everyone adored her.
And, as expected, she found a real party taking place. While Lily began asking the students to calm down, the Ravenclaw Head Girl, Beatrice, also came over to the commotion, took charge, and began reprimanding them much more firmly.
The students immediately started dispersing. After the situation finally calmed down, Beatrice herself, who was friends with Iris, couldn't help but look around. "Where's Iris?"
"She joined the new friends. She's with Roberta, if you want to know," one of the students replied with a grumble.
Lily didn't know Iris very well, but Beatrice clearly did. The Ravenclaw girl made a small grimace, as if that were something extremely common.
"At least she's not involved in this mess," the Head Girl muttered in the end.
"Well, if you want to find her, you'll probably find her behaving very well. Which is quite unusual," another student replied, drawing a few laughs.
"Then she's somewhere in the middle of the train." The Head Girl sighed. "Well, Lupin will be around there anyway. If she's causing any trouble, he'll handle it."
Then she turned her attention to Lily and asked that they continue their patrol. The two of them proceeded through the corridors of the Hogwarts Express.
When they gathered again with the other prefects and the Head Boy and Head Girl, Frank was reviewing the reports he had received and asking a few questions about the incidents.
Lily couldn't help feeling a certain pride as she joined the prefects once again, with Beatrice and Frank listening to the reports... since they would have to submit them to the professors upon arrival.
Lily liked that Frank was responsible, kind, and extremely competent. It wasn't difficult to understand why Alice liked him so much. She was happy that they would marry after Hogwarts, since she loved Alice and had always rooted for the two of them.
She listened to the various Gryffindor mishaps involving the Marauders and other incidents from the other carriages.
And she couldn't help thinking about Severus. Obviously, the Slytherin prefects were students from Slytherin itself, who would clearly cover up anything suspicious if one of their fellow Slytherins was involved.
Despite that, Lily was relieved that she wasn't the one searching the Slytherin carriages and that she didn't have to deal with him. She still didn't know exactly how she should act when she saw him.
Perhaps she would simply ignore him. Perhaps she would pretend he didn't exist. That was probably the best course of action. After all, they no longer had anything to do with each other. 1
While she listened to the other prefects, Lupin approached her.
"So? Any problems?" Lily asked.
Lupin shook his head. "Ah, nothing major," he replied. "I mean, I found a Slytherin student with a strange eagle on his shoulder, but I didn't put it in the report. It didn't seem important enough. People can carry their animals."
Lily raised an eyebrow. "A strange eagle?"
"Yeah. Something I've never seen in the wizarding world. Maybe it's some kind of bird from one of those tropical countries." Lupin shrugged. "It was blue, and a really beautiful shade of blue, you know? But it seemed very well trained."
Despite her curiosity, Lily didn't ask any more questions.
A few hours later, the train finally arrived at Hogwarts.
It was already night. The castle shone in the distance, illuminated by hundreds of lights, creating an almost magical sight before the dark lake.
As a prefect, Lily continued helping the students disembark.
Especially the first-years, who were just children.
They all seemed lost, nervous, and frightened. But also enchanted.
Lily couldn't help smiling as she watched those children looking at Hogwarts from afar for the very first time.
It was exactly the same expression she herself had worn years ago.
Raccoon Here:
I am writing from Lily's point of view, so there won't be any self-criticism. Lily has her flaws, of course. I tried to make it realistic, based on how I imagine Lily's thoughts and the interactions she would have with her Gryffindor friends.
There are some changes in this fanfic compared to the other one. First, Lily's parents didn't like Severus, unlike in the other Shadow Monarch fanfic, where they did. Also, Slughorn wasn't initially as friendly as he was in the other one. I didn't want to make it exactly the same, so I made some changes in this fanfic. 2
For now, I don't intend to make this a Severus Snape x Lily story, but rather to write from her point of view. 3
