HP – Jon Arctic as Severus Snape!
Chapter 69 - Steps to Start a Fortune.
[Chapter Size: 4800 Words.]
Third Person POV
Hogwarts.
...
...
On Friday, in one part of the castle, close to 5 o'clock in the afternoon, Severus would have his meeting with a group of third-year Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw students who had some difficulties with Charms and Potions classes and needed some extra help, as well as with Herbology.
These tutoring sessions were quite common and generally, the helpers of the younger students would not come here as punishment. Older students usually volunteered to teach them in exchange for points for their houses.
Severus thought that reward was ridiculous, but he saw no problem at all with helping students who were struggling. He simply believed that, instead of receiving points, they should earn other benefits.
Ingredients, knowledge, private lessons with professors... Now that would be a more decent reward than receiving twenty points for giving extra lessons to students from lower years. But most students seemed to accept it, and who was Severus to complain about this system at this moment?
In any case, Severus entered the classroom as all the children immediately stopped talking and gathering in small groups. There were at least eight of them, all watching him as he entered.
Some gazes were filled with curiosity and admiration, recognizing him, while some showed surprise at seeing him enter, whereas others seemed cautious at the sight of the Slytherin emblem on his robes. Severus's eyes moved over each of them for a moment.
"Hello, ladies and gentlemen." He greeted them in a more relaxed tone, trying to make the students feel at ease.
This seemed to ease some of the initial tension, although a few still appeared to be expecting the usual mockery from a Slytherin, as most tended to behave. Even so, several of them already knew him, at least by sight, thanks to the attention Severus had been attracting during those nearly two weeks of classes, and they seemed to have a glimmer of expectation.
"Well, since you're here for tutoring, I'll be your teacher for the next few weeks. I hope I can help you with your problems in Charms, Potions, and a little Herbology..."
After all, those children had not done very well the previous year and needed some extra help to improve their grades.
It was not very common for a student to repeat a year at Hogwarts, although some ended up needing to retake certain subjects. There were even students who, after their seventh year, remained for some time just to complete a specific subject if they were unable to achieve a minimum grade or managed to get permission to try again, although they could do that at home as well. Even so, most tried to resolve these difficulties as quickly as possible through those tutoring sessions alongside others from their year.
And, considering wizarding society, it was not as though everyone needed to be an expert in every subject. Most wizards would end up in bureaucratic jobs, commercial establishments, or other professions that did not require advanced mastery of everything Hogwarts taught.
Severus could certainly see many flaws in the school curriculum, but it was not his duty to solve that today either.
His eyes once again moved over the eight students.
Severus watched the children in silence, and he continued. First wanting to make the place feel more comfortable. "I think we can start with some initial introductions."
Some of the children nodded.
"I'd like to know each of your names. Then, your likes, dislikes... and I'd even like to hear about your dreams if you feel comfortable sharing them with all of us."
Severus remained sitting casually on the desk, with a glimmer of interest as he watched each of those children. He wanted to get to know them, to learn a little about their personalities, and those questions would certainly help him initially. As simple as they might seem, they were still enough to discover a great deal about someone.
It was something that not even the professors usually did. None of them truly asked about the children or their dreams. Generally, the professors gave their own introductions and, of course, there were some exceptions, such as the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, who wanted to know which spells each student knew. But Severus was approaching a subject that many of those students probably would not hear about during all seven years of study at Hogwarts, talking to the professors about themselves before talking about magic.
Severus looked at the children, who seemed cautious in the face of his questions, and smiled. "Well, since everyone is a little nervous, why don't you start by hearing about me?" he said cheerfully. "My name is Severus Snape, I believe some of you have already heard about me. I like seeking knowledge, I like doing things that change people's lives, and I'm an inventor by nature. Some would even say... a revolutionary." He winked at the children. While some of them raised their eyebrows.
"As for my dislikes, I don't like bullies, people who abuse those weaker than themselves. I don't like ignorant and arrogant people who try to talk about things they know nothing about and still want to impose their opinions and their will. I also don't like stagnation, remaining ignorant, and simply standing still or being lazy, I always have to be doing something..."
Severus said that in a relaxed manner to all those children who were watching him attentively.
"My dream is to improve the magical world. Maybe even protect it," Severus concluded calmly.
"Are you the one who has the phoenix?" asked a Ravenclaw student, finally recognizing Severus's name and asking excitedly.
"Ah, of course. Besides, I should already call my phoenix, since she'll be our assistant. Solaris, appear."
With a burst of fire and exclamations of surprise from the children, Solaris appeared, beating her wings before landing on Severus's shoulder, while he remained seated on the professor's desk, his arms crossed.
"My phoenix and I will be teaching you. If you behave, I'll even let you touch her. You won't mind, will you?"
The phoenix let out an affirmative sound, making the children even more excited.
"Great, great," Severus said, clapping his hands. "Now let's begin. We'll start with you. Tell us your name, your likes, your dislikes, and perhaps a dream. We all enter the wizarding world with expectations and form our dreams throughout our journey here at Hogwarts. If you have one and want to share it, you can tell us."
The student was caught off guard and shrank back a little, while Severus gave him an encouraging smile.
"I-I'm Loras Wallace. I... well, born..." he said, making Severus immediately interrupt him by raising a hand.
"Hey, hey. That's not important here, understood?" he said in a serious tone, making the boy look surprised.
That was not how any other Slytherin would have acted. After all, many would have already judged him and demanded that he state his blood status.
"We're here for tutoring. I'm not here to judge your lineage. I think that's bullshit, if you want to know. I don't expect to hear that from any of you, understood?" Severus said to everyone.
The children nodded, seeming a little more at ease now.
"Now, please, continue," he asked.
The boy began talking about his likes, which basically involved doing magic. His dislikes were rude people and also broccoli, which drew a small wave of laughter from the other students. As for his dream, he wanted to become a great wizard and do incredible things.
Despite it being somewhat vague, Severus clapped and encouraged the others to do the same. That gave the other children the courage to start speaking, especially after Severus showed that he had enjoyed the introductions.
He listened to each of them and retained all the information he could. It would be quite natural to encourage them using what he had learned and even make a few good-humored threats. At one point, Loras had a fit of laughter, and Severus threatened to make him eat broccoli during class if he kept laughing uncontrollably and disturbing the others.
In any case, that first part was quite relaxing. Severus transfigured a chair into a perch for Solaris to stay in the middle of the room and quickly looked at each of the children before raising a finger. A light appeared at its tip, catching everyone by surprise, as it began to take shape while his finger glided through the air.
There was a blackboard behind him, but why use it when one had magic?
Starting from the same concept he used to create and shape his flames, Severus had tested that theory with his own magic. Now, he used pure magic to create glowing lines in the air, forming a kind of luminous board that he wrote on with the tip of his finger, writing several words, moving it at high speed and beginning to teach the material with those bright blue strokes in the middle of the room.
The first subject of the lesson would be a set of second-year spells. finite incantatem, expelliarmus, rictusempra.
Severus did not limit himself to text. He also began creating drawings and small representations to make it easier for the children to understand.
"Listen, let's start with this spell, expelliarmus..." he began to explain. It was a basic disarming charm.
As he spoke, Severus began to transfigure the entire room, transforming it into an environment more suitable for them to carry out practical tests. He created an arena like he had done in Flitwick's class yesterday.
That continued to leave all the students quite excited. Severus used the same information he had acquired earlier to capture the students' attention and try to encourage them. He was very good at it. After all, he had already had several children, grandchildren, and other descendants and had needed to pass on his values and concepts to them. Teaching those children was not difficult at all, especially with magic on his side, allowing him to make them learn while having fun.
Severus was very good at creating magical lights and even used his telekinesis to assist him. In the end, the children all left laughing and having fun after petting Solaris, since that was the reward Severus had promised, while the phoenix did not mind the children's touch on her feathers.
They could announce that very same day in the Great Hall that they had been given the opportunity to touch a phoenix, something most wizards could not boast of having done in their entire lives.
In any case, in the days since leaving the headmaster's office, Severus continued with his routine of attending classes normally, perhaps no longer receiving the large number of points he had earned before, but even so, despite being more immersed in his books that had nothing to do with the lessons, he answered every question the professors asked, earning a few points.
Most of the professors no longer even cared that he was not paying direct attention to the lessons. They knew Severus was a genius in those subjects, while some were even fascinated by the additional knowledge he sought in Muggle books, going so far as to ask questions about his reading, drawing the attention of the other students as he discussed it with the professors.
He also continued spending his time with the other students in his group of friends. They shared lunch and gathered by the Black Lake, while Severus spent his nights in the Room of Requirement conducting his magical research.
His routine also continued to involve exercise every morning. Severus began waking up before sunrise to run, while also practicing a few spells. He was still fascinated by the idea of walking on water and used the Black Lake to practice.
He also looked toward the sky and could not help thinking that perhaps he could fly, but first he was focused on managing to walk on water and seemed persistent in finding a spell that would allow him to walk on water as though he were on solid ground.
With him maintaining a body-strengthening routine, his body gained muscle with each passing day, as his potions provided everything he needed to nourish his body and aid in muscular development.
He knew that mood and energy came from how you took care of your body, and the old Severus had never been able to experience that drive and sensation.
Besides running, Severus began practicing fencing again. Some students even stopped to watch whenever they found him in some corridor facing two or three suits of armor at once with a sword, always putting on a true spectacle.
Fencing was making his body grow accustomed to his old skills again. In his other world, he had surpassed every swordsman in the world, even before the age of 20... Only his children, grandchildren, and the generations after them had become true challenges for him after the wars, until his body finally grew old and he began to lose his combat ability.
In any case, now he was there, happy to be able to move his body again as he had in the old days.
And today, being Saturday, Slughorn had left Severus a special outfit to wear for what they would be doing that day. Severus raised an eyebrow upon waking up to find it waiting for him. He certainly had not asked for anything like that, but he did not refuse it either.
Heloísa also received an outfit, after all, Severus had invited her on Thursday to go with him, and the girl had been excited by the invitation. Slughorn certainly could not refuse a request from Severus when he asked for that. In fact, he would use the girl as a showcase for the women's line of his perfume, spraying the perfume on her after giving her a bottle.
Heloísa loved the new scent, while also being excited to visit the Ministry of Magic for the first time, as Severus had told her. And since she would certainly be showing off his women's perfume around the place, even Slughorn had to admit that Severus's idea was a good one.
Thus, the Potions professor and the two students traveled to the Ministry of Magic through the fireplace in his office using Floo Powder that morning, after Severus taught Heloísa how to use it.
When Severus passed through the flames, being the last of the three, he entered the Ministry's atrium, filled with adult men and women talking in pairs or groups, while others walked back and forth, many carrying briefcases in their hands.
"Professor Slughorn!" called a man passing through the Ministry's atrium upon seeing him.
"Hello, Santiago. Good to see you," Slughorn said cheerfully before gesturing toward the two students. "Allow me to introduce them. These are Severus Snape and Heloísa Vittorini, two students from my house. And this is Santiago Mirim, from the Department of Logistics," he introduced them, also making it clear that the man was part of his Slug Club.
Severus greeted him, as did Heloísa. After the introductions, the man left the group, saying he had a few things to take care of, and they continued toward reception. A few more people recognized Slughorn, speaking to him with quick greetings.
Slughorn explained why they were there, and the woman asked for their wands. After handing them over for inspection, they proceeded further into the Ministry.
They entered a lift and descended to a certain floor. Then, they walked through a department until they found a woman sitting alone behind a desk in the middle of the corridor.
Slughorn spoke briefly with her, and the woman pointed toward one of the doors. They entered and found a fully decorated office, where a mustached man was examining some paperwork before raising his eyes toward them.
"Oh, Professor Slughorn!" the man exclaimed as soon as he saw him enter, rising to greet him.
After greeting the three of them, the man turned his attention to the two students and couldn't help but breathe in the air curiously.
"Oh, so these are the perfumes? Delightful," he said with a smile as he caught both the masculine and feminine fragrances.
Severus and Heloísa had been drawing attention wherever they went ever since they entered the Ministry. Several ladies had looked at Heloísa with curiosity, some even displaying a glimmer of envy in their eyes as they caught the fragrance lingering in the air around the girl. One of them even asked what perfume it was, while Slughorn joked that they were inventions made by his students. The woman wanted more information, and the professor assured her that it would be released soon.
"Yes. We've come here to register the patents, sir," Severus said.
"Excellent, excellent. Let's begin the paperwork, then," the man said.
Severus received the papers regarding his product and began filling them out. The man even asked about the ingredients, and Severus took the potted plant out of a bag and handed it to him.
The man stared at it in surprise. "An unregistered plant?!" he exclaimed. That would certainly throw another department into chaos.
Severus had created the plant with his powers, which was why no one else would be able to find it, but on the registration paperwork, he wrote that he had discovered this unknown plant. Obviously, he had to register its origin, but no one would be able to find it anywhere else and, even with a specimen in hand, no one would be capable of cultivating it, since he had altered its genetics so that it could only grow through his powers.
If anyone asked in the future, Severus would simply say that he had developed his own method of cultivating it. He had no obligation whatsoever to reveal his secrets if someone tried to reproduce it and realized that it was impossible to cultivate.
Even if he had to hand over an entire crop and they called in their best herbologists in Great Britain. Because of that, his perfume would certainly be a major source of profit for him.
In any case, all the legal procedures were completed, and they left the Ministry afterward. Severus was not taken back to Hogwarts immediately. Slughorn and the two students headed to Diagon Alley, as Severus already intended to offer his product and would waste no time, that being a perfect opportunity, now that they were outside Hogwarts, to finally secure his first and perhaps only client he would need at that moment.
They made their way to Madame Montclair's Beauty Salon.
Severus found the same woman who had attended to him on the day he had gotten his hair cut there. She also recognized him immediately. After all, his transformation had been quite striking to all of them.
"Hello. Is Madame Montclair here? We have some matters to discuss with her," Severus took the initiative.
That was his field. The field of negotiation. He had even refused Slughorn's help with it when he offered to assist him.
The woman couldn't help but look at him in fascination, even losing herself in his scent for a moment. "She-she's finishing an appointment. If you wait another ten minutes, you'll be able to speak with her. Would it have to be directly with her?"
"I believe that, since the matter involves a financial opportunity, yes," Severus replied, and the woman quickly nodded.
Then he turned back to Slughorn. "Can we wait, then?" he asked the professor.
"Of course," Slughorn replied.
They stepped back to wait, while the woman couldn't help but look at Heloísa with curiosity, and even some clients entered the place surprised as they turned their eyes toward the girl, who was even embarrassed by the stares of the older witches ever since leaving Hogwarts.
That perfume was unlike anything they had ever smelled. They had never encountered a magical perfume capable of lingering for so long, maintaining a remarkably distinct fragrance without irritating the people who smelled it. On the contrary, it seemed to make them want to keep breathing in that aroma.
"This is the perfume Severus created!" Heloísa said to a woman who couldn't pass by without asking.
The receptionist also couldn't help but look at her curiously, but her eyes soon turned toward Severus, now even more interested.
They remained there for some time until Madame Montclair finally appeared to check the time, before noticing that there were people waiting for her.
"Hello, Madame Montclair," Severus approached.
She showed great surprise. "Oh, Mon prince! You've returned! And it's perfect, I see you're taking care of your cheveux! C'est merveilleux!" she exclaimed before looking at the other two. "And who might these two be?"
Then she noticed Slughorn and seemed even more surprised. "Oh, professeur! What an honor to welcome you to mon salon! What brings you here?"
"I'm here with the student you call prince, actually!" Slughorn replied with a chuckle. Perhaps Madame Montclair wasn't supposed to know, but Slughorn knew that Severus was part of the Prince bloodline.
While Madame Montclair looked at Severus, he gently pushed Heloísa forward by the back, making the woman turn her attention toward her.
"A little girl who should be at Hogwarts," the madame said, before catching her scent and widening her eyes. "And quite parfumée. What parfum is that?" she immediately asked.
Severus opened a mischievous smile, making the perfume bottle appear in his hand before placing it directly in front of Madame Montclair.
"I'm glad you asked. That's exactly the matter we came here to discuss. What you smelled is the perfume inside this bottle, a formula I just registered and invented myself. I'd like to propose a business arrangement, if Madame Montclair's Beauty Salon is willing to enter into an exclusivity contract to sell my perfume," he said.
The receptionist immediately craned her neck along with the clients who were waiting for their turns, while Madame Montclair widened her eyes.
They had a great deal to discuss. Two hours later, close to noon, the three of them left the salon. Heloísa's hair was completely curled and shining, as she gazed in fascination at a mirror Severus had conjured for her.
The girl had received a complimentary beauty treatment for her hair while the adults personally negotiated each clause of the contract, which had been drafted by Slughorn.
At the end of the negotiation, Madame Montclair was extremely excited to learn that she would be able to sell an exclusive perfume, especially one that would certainly have the ladies of magical Britain competing among themselves to obtain it.
For that reason, the perfume would not be cheap at all, and he planned not to make many of them, after all, they were supposed to be rare and difficult to obtain in order to keep their value high. He would have a larger collection and some that he could sell in greater quantities, but he had to maintain an exclusive line for the wealthiest women and those who wanted to gift their husbands, fathers, and sons with the men's lines that Severus was wearing.
Even though Madame Montclair was not very satisfied with the cost figures demanded by Severus, he justified them by explaining that the plant used was extremely rare and required special care.
In the end, Severus would keep practically fifty percent of the value: thirty percent for supplying the raw material and another twenty percent in royalties for the invention and registration of the formula. He gave her two options: she could hire someone to produce the perfume, or Severus himself could personally make a batch, which would be of higher quality, for an additional 20% of the value as payment for his labor, giving him 70% of the total product value, which would start at no less than 200 Galleons per bottle, with only 100 bottles of the women's line and 50 of the men's line being sold per year to maintain exclusivity, allowing him to earn 70% of 30,000 Galleons. How his capitalist self had devised this whole scheme.
For someone who had been trying to earn a few hundred Galleons by selling his plants and receiving only 20 Galleons per week from the reserve, he could receive 21,000 Galleons over the next few months, an amount not even the wealthiest families among his classmates could dream of having before becoming lords of their families.
Obviously, his contract did not grant Madame Montclair absolute exclusivity, only exclusivity within Great Britain for at least two years. Severus could still sell his perfume outside the country.
Through Madame Montclair, he also managed to obtain a direct contact in France, her homeland. She knew a colony of Veela connected to a large network of establishments that held considerable influence in the French women's beauty market.
The quantity could double, and with France receiving people from all over the world, as a country regarded as a symbol of beauty, it could increase even further.
And Severus was talking about only a single perfume. He had so many options that he would let this first one make a name for itself for a year, then launch more fragrances the following year.
In any case, the three of them had lunch in Diagon Alley to celebrate the contract. After all, returning to Hogwarts just to eat in the Great Hall did not seem particularly special after closing a deal like that.
At the beginning of the afternoon, they returned to Hogwarts.
Severus still had his tutoring class, this time related to Potions. Because of that, he met with the students in the dungeons, where the children began working on their potions in a much more relaxed manner than they could with Slughorn, while Severus assisted them instead of simply ignoring all of them. Slughorn might have been helping Severus a great deal lately, but he remained a terrible professor, giving most of his attention to his closed group, of which Severus was also a part.
In any case, Severus did not shout when they got an ingredient wrong or were about to make some mistake. He always tried to keep the entire room under control using his telekinesis and expanded awareness, while one part of his mind remained focused on the open book in front of him.
Severus did not judge anyone, much less threaten to take away points. He talked to the students and encouraged them. So even though this was only his second meeting with those children, his classes were already quite fun and productive.
"Well, it seems that the material we were supposed to cover over an entire month, we managed to finish in just one day of Potions..." Severus said as he looked at the results and couldn't help but sigh. He had managed to make the children perfectly learn the potion from the second-year tests in just one day...
"We'll use next week to review everything we did today, and I believe our Potions lessons are already finished."
That made all the children display surprisingly resigned expressions. They genuinely seemed disappointed by the idea of the lessons ending so soon.
Severus stared at them thoughtfully. "You don't seem satisfied with that... right?" he asked curiously. And the only thing he received was an immediate confirmation from everyone.
"Then... how about we continue with the tutoring lessons, but start going deeper into third-year subjects? Maybe I can teach you some more advanced things."
That immediately made the children excited. Severus would still have to spend an entire month tutoring the students, so there was no harm in using that time to teach them a little more.
In the end, he made everyone clean their cauldrons before they left.
The next day, Sunday, Severus basically disappeared into the Room of Requirement for the entire day. He even took Heloísa with him so that she would not be alone, while teaching the girl a few things, helping her with some difficulties she was having in her first year and even introducing her to some slightly more advanced knowledge.
The following week, however, things would change a little. When Monday arrived, the Quidditch tryouts would begin.
Severus wondered whether he should participate and, sincerely, he didn't think it was a bad idea. It wasn't like flying on a dragon, but it would certainly give him the opportunity to get some exercise and improve his body, as he sought to at least develop the athletic build he had possessed in his past life when he was this same age.
