HP – Jon Arctic as Severus Snape!
Chapter 31 – Great Hall.
[Chapter Size: 2600 Words.]
Third Person POV
Hogwarts.
...
...
Severus spent the trip being questioned nonstop, even he had to do something about the blonde girl with glasses. The girl was being far too insistent.
"Kimberly, stop it! You're being way too delicate about this," Iris complained, the situation irritating her.
"What? I just wanted to ask about it. All our friends are afraid to ask... Leon said you should stay away from him!" Kimberly said.
"Leon..." Iris rolled her eyes. "I'm already 17 years old, magically an adult, so there's no reason for you all to keep getting involved in my life..." she said frustratedly.
"Calm down, Iris. We're just worried about you... You know that, right?" Kimberly said.
For Severus, listening to them almost start an argument, it was fair for them to think a little about him. He didn't expect people to magically throw away the old opinion they had of Severus just because he had changed his appearance. Severus used to be quite a dark person, and his circle of friends were all future Death Eaters. He leaned forward then.
"Well, as long as you don't ask me rude questions, like whether I've killed someone before or if I intend to become the next Dark Lord, I won't have any problem answering, if I'm free to answer, of course..." Severus said to her in a calm and even rather gallant tone, ignoring the looks Iris and Roberta were giving him while opening a smile, making even the girl with glasses blush a little.
"Hey! What are you doing?!" Iris immediately complained about the strange change in Severus.
"Well, since you put it that way..." Kimberly lowered her head, looking down, while Roberta shot Severus a deadly glare, as if saying he was simply doing that on purpose. "It's just that you changed so much..." she added.
"Well, I changed. I decided to change. Change is something everyone can eventually go through at some point in their lives. Sometimes it can be more radical, sometimes more subtle. I chose to change many things. I hope it's not a bad change..." Severus said without caring about Iris's protests or Roberta's furious stare, while still keeping a smile directed at the girl with glasses, who started looking away.
"No... You look great. I like you much more like this than before..." she admitted, making the other two girls uncomfortable with what was happening there.
He leaned back, seeming satisfied with that, while looking at Iris, who clearly hadn't liked it.
"What?" he asked, as if she had nothing to do with it.
Well, he was a king. He was used to having beautiful women around him. He knew very well how to charm and speak with the precise tone, charm, and pacing women would call seductive.
He did it to make the girl uncomfortable, and it really worked. She didn't say anything else, but she kept glancing at Severus as if contemplating something. But whenever Severus locked his green eyes onto her, she immediately looked away and couldn't say a word.
The carriage finally stopped when they arrived in front of the school, circling around the fountain before stopping right at the entrance.
"Looks like we've arrived. Let's go," Severus simply said in a calm tone, while hearing tongue-clicking and someone huffing behind him. Clearly not satisfied with what had happened earlier.
He lifted the suitcase without looking at it, while it floated beside him.
Professors Flitwick and Sprout were at the entrance, greeting the students entering and heading toward the hall.
"Professors!" Iris greeted Professor Sprout.
"Miss Scamander, welcome back!" they said, also looking at the students and greeting them.
Flitwick's and Professor Sprout's eyes also fell on Severus, with somewhat surprised and confused looks directed at the Slytherin. They didn't seem to recognize him. But the situation was a bit strange as well.
Certainly, seeing a snake among three badgers was something unusual to witness. Especially when Slytherin had practically isolated itself from the other houses at Hogwarts, with Voldemort rising and due to the news of the wars. The house of the snake had begun to be treated as the enemy of all the others, and the badgers were a house with more timid people, the ones most afraid of everything happening.
They continued forward, finding several other students following the same path. Professor Minerva walked past them and kept going. She was probably heading to the boathouse entrance to meet the first-year students with Hagrid.
"You girls head to the Great Hall. I'll see if I can find Heloísa to give her the suitcase..." Severus suddenly said, interrupting their walk together.
The three girls stared at him but nodded, not seeing any problem with it.
"Just be careful. You don't want to lose house points and get detention for being caught wandering around the castle on the first day," Iris said, despite still being a little sulky about Severus's attitude in the carriage.
He nodded and soon separated from them, entering a corridor while they headed to the Great Hall. He moved through the castle here and there. Instead of going where Professor Minerva had gone, he headed to another part of the castle.
And his memories worked very well in helping him find his way through the castle, because a few minutes later he finally arrived at the greenhouse. He looked at the suitcase that had been carried the entire time and decided to make it more practical. None of the professors seemed very impressed by the fact that the suitcase was floating behind him, after all, there should be spells that could do that, but none of them knew it was being carried through telekinesis, because that certainly would have drawn attention, with Severus constantly keeping his magic active.
To store it away, it was simple. He took out his wand and pointed it, making the suitcase begin to distort until it turned into a sickle coin. Then he calmly picked it up and slipped it into a pocket of his robe.
His next move was going to the greenhouse. Which was quite simple when he saw the door open. Severus opened a silly smile at the enormous amount of herbs, plants, and flowers spread throughout the inside of the main greenhouse. So much so that Professor Sprout didn't even teach here, this was where they let herbs grow both for use in classes and to help around the castle, whether in the infirmary or through other means.
"You shouldn't be here."
Still immersed in his happier thoughts while looking at so many plants, Severus heard a voice and saw a ghost emerging from one of the greenhouse's white walls and approaching him. Despite not showing anger, but rather... curiosity?
"Hello, Nearly Headless Nick, or should I say, Sir Nicholas..." Severus greeted with a smile, while the ghost continued staring at him.
"You are Snape...?" he asked after observing him silently for a few seconds.
Obviously, he noticed the strange singularity of that mortal, he could certainly see something in his soul...
"So you know who I am?" Severus asked curiously.
"No... but you... are strange... it's you, and at the same time, it isn't?" he said in a tone of astonishment.
"I think you have more to say than simply not recognizing me," Severus asked.
"Looks like he can't see you, right?" Severus murmured.
'Apparently not. He's looking at you and seems quite terrified.' Articuno made comments in his mind, the bird having remained invisible on his shoulder the entire time.
'Maybe it's because I'm reincarnated... Ghosts stand between the line of life and death...'
"No... No. Sorry. I feel that it's you." He began cautiously. "But I also feel that you're different. Certainly much more well-kept than you used to be. However, what surprised me is that now you seem older, much older..." he said.
"You could say that," Severus admitted. He really was an old man here. With the memories, his soul from this world had merged with Jon Arctic's soul, after all, his powers had been released after his memories returned in the middle of summer.
Nick stared at him for a while, but as if he had finally confirmed something, he merely nodded.
"Well, you're not trying to cause trouble, are you? Here?" he asked, seeming to discard the earlier subject and returning to see what Severus was doing, with the entire school now in the Great Hall.
At that, Severus gave a small smile.
"Actually, I... wanted to get some seeds. There are so many here that I intend to grow some herbs. I plan to return them in a few days anyway, I'll speak with Professor Sprout later..." Severus said to the still somewhat suspicious man.
"Seeds?" he murmured, a little surprised.
"Of course. Just a few," Severus said, while the ghost merely nodded, not seeing any problem with it after thinking for a bit.
"Alright. Just let the professor know. Now I'm going to the Great Hall. I'll have to see how the Gryffindors are doing and meet with my colleagues..." he said.
After all, Nick was the ghost of the lions, with each house having a specific ghost.
Nick, despite being averse to Slytherin due to the rivalry between the houses, did not act that way toward individual students. Not even with the previous Severus, someone hostile toward the student who possessed a bad reputation at Hogwarts.
Even so, Severus had always ignored him and thought that starting an argument with a ghost was a waste of time.
In any case, Nick left, and now he had the greenhouse entirely available to himself.
He quickly began searching through all the plants, looking for the best herbs he knew. He did not take any seeds directly from Professor Sprout's stock. He simply started producing the seeds himself directly from the plants that interested him.
Having the ability of instant growth and even modifications to life itself, that was something quite simple for him.
Soon, he began filling a small pouch with several seeds, taking four or five seeds from the plants that interested him the most.
He saw some mandrakes in one corner and decided to perform a test, pulling one out of its pot without any ear protection. But the shrill scream never came.
When it came out, it looked more like a child, or rather, a baby letting out soft little whimpers. Severus released magical energy through his arm that covered the root that normally screamed, it was a forest energy spell, making it become covered almost like a mother's embrace.
"Interesting..." Severus murmured when he saw it begin to laugh like a baby, while placing the mandrake back into the pot.
The mandrake even sensed that it was going back, not wanting to leave there, letting out the quiet cry of a baby that didn't want to leave its mother's arms. Severus ignored it and buried it back into the soil.
In any case, there were even some quite expensive herbs that Sprout was cultivating there. Something he hadn't been able to buy even in the shops of Diagon Alley.
After all, it was easier for Hogwarts to buy the available herbs from Diagon Alley, or even receive them from the Ministry of Magic, and use the greenhouses to cultivate those that could not normally be bought on the market precisely because they were difficult to produce.
So, adding the seeds from that night together with all the other seeds he already had, he could create an enormous greenhouse.
Satisfied with his small collection of acquired seeds, he headed toward the Great Hall with a small bag in hand.
He could already hear the loud cheers and applause, which meant the Sorting Hat ceremony had already begun, while the first students were already being chosen and the tables began applauding their new classmates.
Severus slowly opened the door without making a sound. Everyone was paying more attention to the children being called to the stool with the Sorting Hat, placed upon their small heads, having their houses chosen one after another.
Severus did not pay much attention to that, being far more satisfied with the enormous number of seeds he had managed to obtain. Obviously, some people saw him entering, especially the professors, who were facing directly toward the hall's doors. There were exchanged glances among them, unable to identify Severus.
As for Severus, he turned his eyes toward the hall itself, as if he were seeing it for the first time.
'This place is really very beautiful...', Articuno commented, seeming quite satisfied with the sight of the starry sky above the ceiling, with the floating candles and all the commotion of the students. It was the first time he had seen a magic school.
Severus also seemed to enjoy the spectacle as if it were his first time, but soon his eyes shifted away. His gaze went toward the Slytherin table while he found a seat in a corner, feeling many eyes on him.
There was one gaze sharper than all the others, and that gaze came from outside the table. Even before sitting down, with several students looking at him in confusion while he found a seat, asking each other who he was, his head turned toward the main table.
"RAVENCLAW!!!!"
His eyes met the headmaster's, who seemed to have even forgotten to clap when the Sorting Hat had just chosen Ravenclaw for a small child who ran off toward the Ravenclaw bench.
The blue eyes stared at those green eyes in Slytherin with a completely shocked expression.
'Is he seriously trying to do that?', Severus murmured to himself.
'Yes. He's trying to do it,' Articuno replied.
'You can feel it too?', Severus seemed more surprised by Articuno.
'We're connected. Of course I'm going to feel when someone is trying to invade your mind. In fact, that becomes even stronger from the moment I joined with you. After all, you and I block with the strength of two instead of you alone. Though you're not bad yourself either and could do this on your own just fine...', Articuno informed, while Severus watched those blue eyes trying to use Legilimency on him.
'Interesting... You can use Legilimency with just a look? I hadn't read about that...', Severus was more excited about that possibility than worried about the headmaster trying to read his mind.
Being able to read someone's mind with just a glance was much more practical than using a wand. Maybe he could do that too by manifesting his warg ability, which wouldn't even require eye contact...
Severus began pondering.
He finally decided to sit down and watched the headmaster seeming worried, while he himself debated internally, not caring about those blue eyes still on him, thinking about how to improve his Legilimency...
Professor McGonagall also stared at him with a strange look. If the headmaster remembered well what she had said that day during the holidays, he would have connected the dots, after all, McGonagall had spoken about him and Newt had said he would know who the talented student he met was the moment he saw him...
Severus no longer cared about anything else and sat down, ignoring the headmaster.
He was in the middle of the fourth-year students. It was the only spot with an empty seat, to be honest, and he did not want to be together with the sixth and seventh-year boys. He certainly did not want trouble on his first night at Hogwarts.
Even so, among those students, they looked at him with a certain distrust, trying to guess who he was.
When Severus merely returned it with a smile and a greeting, Professor McGonagall called another girl.
"Heloísa Vittorini!"
