HP – Jon Arctic as Severus Snape!
Chapter 28 – Hogwarts Express 02.
[Chapter Size: 2800 Words.]
Third Person POV
Train.
...
...
Heloísa arrived the next moment, throwing the door open forcefully while dragging a small suitcase behind her. It seemed quite heavy for an 11-year-old girl.
"You knew you could've put that in the train's luggage compartment, right?" Severus raised an eyebrow at her, while it was more than obvious that she was struggling to carry it, her face sweaty along with a mix of embarrassment and frustration.
He didn't even wait for her to answer. He simply conjured his telekinesis without taking his eyes off the book he was still reading. The girl's suitcase began to float from the doorway into the compartment, until it settled in a corner beneath the window, while the door closed behind Heloísa.
She looked at that in surprise before speaking: "How do you do that?" she asked, hopping over to Severus' side and sitting down to see what he was reading instead of going to the front.
She quickly opened an excited smile at that.
"It's a simple trick," Severus said without taking his eyes off the book.
"Liar!" she replied immediately.
"Why do you say that?" He responded while she tried to understand the words in the book, thinking it was a magic book.
"I talked to Professor McGonagall! I asked if she could do magic like you, like lifting things and controlling them. She looked quite distressed when she heard about what I saw you doing... You didn't even need to look at me or point your wand, and you still used magic! She said that people who can do that are rare..."
'She's right about that,' Articuno spoke from Severus' shoulder. 'She's right in saying that nobody can do this. And I've seen countless wizards throughout my life. Of course, many used wandless magic, but that doesn't mean they could do what you do. You are different. Something I've already told you, and part of why I bonded with you...'
'Which makes me wonder, now that I know you're reincarnated, what else were you in your past life...?' Articuno murmured.
Severus merely opened a faint smile. 'I can't say I was a sorcerer, but I had many magical abilities, abilities similar to these, though not as powerful as what I may be able to conjure in the near future...' Severus replied to Articuno mentally before turning back to the girl.
"Then maybe I'm someone special," he said, while she scoffed.
"Will I be able to do that too?" she asked with some hope.
"Well, I can't say you'll be able to do this easily. In fact, there's no one in the wizarding world who can control magic the way I control it right now. Not the telekinesis I use, or even the elemental magic I can summon with simple thoughts or a shift in mood..." Severus simply said.
After all, why bother with levitation and movement charms when you have this power, which can encompass a lot of things? He could use it like magical hands for tasks or even on the battlefield to distract an enemy.
Even if it wasn't created to be something lethal, it would certainly change the battlefield if Severus managed to improve it even further, because telekinesis still had certain limits, since his magic could only carry a certain amount of weight. He needed to strengthen both his body and his own magic...
She stared at him for a moment while he returned to his book.
"What are you reading? Is it sixth-year material?" she asked curiously, unable to read it no matter how hard she tried.
"No. Muggle knowledge," he said, making her raise an eyebrow.
"Really? I came from a Muggle home. I can teach you some things if you want," she said excitedly, trying to teach Severus something, while Severus almost laughed.
"Really? Then can you tell me how to split an atom's nucleus to generate infinite energy?" he asked just to wipe that smug look off her face.
"What?!" She lost her know-it-all composure.
"I'm talking about science... Did you know we're made of stars?" Severus continued speaking to the girl.
"Made of stars?"
"Yes. In the beginning, our world was just an empty sphere orbiting around the Sun. But as billions of years passed, our world was struck by showers of supernovas coming from the galaxy, which deposited their elements onto this world."
"Our world heated up, created volcanoes, and even generated massive rains, finally making our planet an environment suitable for the first cell to be born."
"Dad says God created the world and that this is conspiracy theory stuff!" she replied harshly, showing that she really did come from a very religious family.
"Well, I'm not saying that excludes God. After all, God could very well have created this world with everything already established. Obviously there would be principles behind how it was created, rather than it simply appearing out of nothing. God should transcend the concepts of past, present, and future. He could create a world from nothing, with a perfectly recorded past already embedded within it. Learning about science also doesn't stray from religious theory," Severus simply said.
She stared at him for a few seconds, not knowing exactly how to respond to those words. She was kind of thinking about it, though it wasn't really something an 11-year-old girl should be thinking about anyway...
However, without her truly having any idea how, Severus believed in gods. His life experiences had already proven that much. And the possibility of a world having been created with its own past already established, a history of changes and evolution leading to where a god wanted it to be, was not impossible in Severus' mind.
After all, as he had told the girl, metaphysical concepts like past, present, and future are beneath the authority of a higher being.
"Anyway, let's stop talking about these things for now. How about telling me if you've been studying about Hogwarts in the books you bought?" Severus asked, wanting to change the subject, to the point that he stopped paying attention to the book to look at the girl.
She immediately displayed a gleam of enthusiasm. "Ah! I read Hogwarts: A History! It talked about the houses and the founders!" she began.
"And have you thought about which house you'd choose?" he asked curiously.
"I still don't know. You're from Slytherin, right?" she said, while he merely shrugged a little.
She had certainly heard about the snake house, about the rumors of a very powerful dark wizard and blood purity. She herself must have seen how the Slytherins were behaving on the train.
'Why all this alarm about Slytherin at this school? Are you guys like dark lords or something?' Articuno asked in a curious tone. He still wasn't very informed about the wizarding world's situation.
'You could see it that way. After all, the current Dark Lord was a member of this house and is using Slytherin itself to recruit, besides expressing quite well the concepts that created this house, the house of ambition. I myself was involved with some of these possible future Death Eaters,' Severus replied. He himself could see his future in that strange cult...
"I am, yes, but I think you'd fit better in Hufflepuff."
"Hufflepuff?" the girl made a face.
"It's not such a bad house," Severus mocked her reaction. Everyone thought Hufflepuff was boring, everyone who wasn't from Hufflepuff, of course.
"It doesn't seem like a house for me. Maybe I should be in Gryffindor. We can be rivals and I can beat you!" she replied smugly.
Severus simply ignored that.
"Well, it doesn't matter which house you go to. I'm sure there will be classmates who'll support you," Severus replied to the girl, while she nodded, opening a brighter smile.
Severus could still see through the window the last people saying goodbye to their parents and running toward the train after storing their luggage.
It was at that moment that the door opened. A lot of people were peeking through the window to see who was inside and, since Severus was talking with Heloísa, he didn't care much.
But the next person seemed to recognize him. He saw the seventh-year Hufflepuff student opening an excited smile upon seeing him.
"Ah! I knew I'd see you!" Iris Scamander replied while holding a feminine bag at her side and quickly entering the compartment while pulling another person by the arm.
Severus merely lifted his gaze toward her, while Iris displayed an excited smile to the other person. "I told you I'd find him. We were lucky to find this still empty," she said to the girl right behind her, wearing a Hufflepuff uniform, with brown hair and eyes of the same color, nothing particularly impressive.
She seemed somewhat displeased while looking at Heloísa and then at Severus, not failing to make a face. "Iris, you dragged me here saying you wanted to see Severus Snape, but where is he?"
She seemed quite displeased when saying Severus' name, certainly due to his reputation at school for being someone gloomy, with a not very favorable appearance and questionable hygiene.
Iris didn't bother responding. She walked up to Severus and simply knelt in front of him, hugging him even with the book between them. "It's good to see you, Sev. I can call you Sev, right?!" she said before kissing his cheek.
Severus showed no radical reaction. He merely looked at that with, at most, a raised eyebrow, while she let out a little laugh, seeming already accustomed to him, covering her mouth with her hand as she laughed.
She found it normal because she had seen how calm he seemed in front of a dragon, so why would he react to a girl's approach? Then Iris returned to her friend, who was staring strangely at Iris' behavior, clearly not expecting something like that.
"He's Severus. I don't know if you know him..." Iris said indifferently, clearly playing with the situation. Heloísa stood there stunned by the sudden events brought by the arrival of those two.
"You said a minute ago that you knew him from just one meeting! And it certainly wasn't a good idea for you to want to find him of all people, Iris! But this... this isn't Severus Snape!" the girl said, while Iris seemed amused.
"I told you he was different, Roberta. I told you people would notice!" Iris replied, while the girl beside Severus looked confused this time, not knowing what they were talking about.
"It can't be..." Roberta merely grumbled, looking at Severus with narrowed eyes.
"Come on, Roberta. Let's sit here. And yes, this is Severus. I already told you, he's very different," Iris replied to her companion while already making herself comfortable to sit directly in front of Severus.
Roberta, who was still standing, looked at Severus, who was still staring at Iris before turning his gaze back to her. Then she exchanged a look with Heloísa.
"I know, but get used to it..." Severus said simply, but to little Heloísa. "Hogwarts is full of weird people..." he said.
"Hey! You're not that different yourself!" Iris protested immediately, though laughing about it.
"Wait, wait! What is going on here?!" Roberta finally exploded. "How do you know each other!? Why are you saying he's Snape? This guy is definitely not Snape. I don't believe it!" the girl replied with the same grimace, denying anyone who said he was Severus Snape.
"Were you different?" Heloísa finally asked curiously beside Severus.
"It's a long story. Well, anyway, I'm not going to keep proving whether I'm Severus or not. Believe it or not, I don't care," Severus said simply to Roberta, while Iris kept laughing.
"So you still believe he isn't Severus?" she replied. Given his attitude, Roberta merely sat down beside Iris, looking lost.
Severus didn't care, while he watched the train finally close its doors, with the parents still waving to their children through the windows.
Roberta seemed to have forgotten all the earlier weirdness and raised her hands to wave goodbye to her parents, who were clearly two Muggles, but they were looking for her and didn't seem able to find her at all, even though she was right there by the window.
Severus did something then, touching the glass with his wand until Roberta's parents finally saw her, immediately waving back at her.
That didn't go unnoticed by the other three.
"What did you do?" Iris asked.
"I had cast a Disillusionment Charm on the window to get a bit of privacy. I just canceled the spell since I saw your friend wanted to speak with her parents," Severus said, opening his book again.
They could hear outside the compartment doors opening all across the train while the students got settled.
The train finally began to depart, with silence filling the environment while the girls looked out the window.
"So..." With silence invading that compartment, Roberta broke it after a while, watching the train pick up speed. "If you really are Severus... what happened to you?" Iris' friend asked.
"Well, I just made a few changes. Fixed my nose, cut and changed my hair. Got more sun and ate better." He stated the obvious.
"Well, that might even be reasonable, even though it's a huge contrast compared to the memory of who you used to be. You were pale, skinny, and awkward... But that doesn't explain the change in your eyes. Surely Severus Snape didn't have those eyes."
"It's due to a magical ability that developed within me over the summer," Severus simply replied.
"A magical ability? You mean your ability to levitate things?" Heloísa was the one who spoke this time.
Despite feeling a bit insecure around the older girls, she still asked Severus curiously, since she felt more comfortable with him.
"By the way, who are you?" Iris suddenly asked before Severus could respond, looking at the clearly first-year girl. "You two seem like you already know each other?" she asked, since it looked like she had met Severus before this train compartment.
"I'm Heloísa Vittorini, first year. It's my first time going to Hogwarts. And you?" the girl replied excitedly.
"I'm Iris Scamander! It's a pleasure, I can call you Heloísa, right? You can call me Iris," the blonde said with a completely welcoming atmosphere.
"It's a pleasure. And yes, Iris!" Heloísa said and then turned back to Roberta, who couldn't help but laugh.
"Looks like you're not that famous among first-year kids," Roberta commented, clearly amused, with Heloísa not giving much importance to her name.
"Is there something special about her?" Heloísa asked curiously while looking at Iris, who also found it a bit amusing.
"Well, Iris comes from a famous family in the magical world, so she might not be very well known among Muggle people. It's normal that you don't know her, since you still haven't learned about magical creatures, but her grandfather is very important to the wizarding world," Severus said calmly from the side.
"Who is her grandfather?" Heloísa immediately asked curiously.
"The greatest magizoologist in the world! The man who wrote Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. It's already nearing its fortieth edition," Iris replied proudly.
"Oh! Fantastic Beasts!" Heloísa had already heard about that book, and Severus, noticing this, slipped his hand into his bag, pulling out the book in question and placing it in front of her.
"Here."
She saw the cover and opened it, seeing a book about magical animals.
"Amazing!" she replied upon seeing several kinds of illustrations of strange creatures. "Professor McGonagall didn't say anything about this. But I heard people talking about it at the pet shop!"
"Maybe because that subject only starts in the third year as an extracurricular class. However, many children love reading about magical creatures. Do you like them?" Iris asked.
"Of course! I have two cats!" the girl replied excitedly while looking at the illustrations of the creatures.
"There really are animals with magical abilities? That's so cool!" she added when she saw some images with real photographs of the creatures hiding, using teleportation or invisibility as she turned the pages.
The book was full of moving images and, to her, that was fantastic. Severus had scribbled in the book, and Iris couldn't help but notice some of his observations as Heloísa flipped through the pages.
However, Severus didn't stop looking at Heloísa, seeing her amused little giggle as she saw all of that for the first time.
Severus remembered a little boy, long ago, also passionate about animals living among the northern snow.
"By the way, you didn't say your name!" Heloísa pointed at Roberta.
"Oh yes, Roberta Dockimivausk. It's a pleasure to meet you, you can just call me Roberta." She said, joining the conversation as well after her earlier suspicions.
In any case, her eyes went to the window while the train was finally heading out of London.
"Hey, Heloísa! You said something about Sev and his ability to levitate things! Tell me more!" Iris immediately returned to the earlier conversation.
