Chapter 26 – Professor Xavier, from Oxford.

Despite all that confusion about his blood being real, Severus did not care much about not obtaining all the vault rights tied to the Pendragon name.

He paid for the test afterward, not because he needed to gain something from it, but because he wanted to better understand his situation. He was not that euphoric about having royal blood; it would not be the first time he had lived through something like this. However, in his past life, he had already possessed everything he needed before claiming anything through his bloodline.

He believed that conquest was far more effective and powerful than inheritance. He had conquered things even before needing to claim them, so he did not care that much about this royal blood of his.

Perhaps one day he could have Excalibur, be acknowledged by it, but it would not be today and honestly, he did not have time to search for the sword of legend. There were far more important things that should be occupying his mind at the moment.

So Severus opened his first account at the bank and deposited 50 galleons into it, from what was left of what he earned from Mianna and what he had also saved over the past few weeks. Despite earning a lot, he had spent quite a bit on ingredients and books.

He still kept 20 galleons and 40 euros with him. All stored inside the storage ring. After leaving Gringotts, already in the middle of the afternoon, he still had time.

He went straight to Muggle London, where he arrived at a café to meet Vanessa. Not that they had arranged anything, but according to the letter she sent Severus, she would be there to talk whenever he could come.

Vanessa had already said that she usually stayed there before going to her night shift at the pub, during their conversations before the pub.

He entered the place, choosing a table to sit at while observing the establishment, which was not very crowded. A waitress was about to approach him, but Vanessa saw him and interrupted her coworker, going herself after leaving the counter.

"Oh, you're here..." Vanessa said, opening a smile.

"Well, you asked, so I came." He replied in a calm tone.

In truth, he was a little interested in the so-called gossip about the pub after he left, but he also wanted to see how everyone was doing. Vanessa was the only contact he had outside the pub.

Although Vanessa was interested in taking Severus to bed, with her mischievous invitations every time, Severus did not see her as a bad person. In fact, he wanted to maintain the connections he had made in the Muggle world, especially because he saw value in it and did not want to isolate himself in the wizarding world like most people did.

They would not be his first contacts; there had been the Evans family before, but Severus knew they did not have good opinions about the old Severus. Perhaps, if they saw him now, they might change their minds, but he did not want to simply deal with people who looked down on him when he had no value in their eyes.

Even if Severus was somewhat guilty for his previous behavior. He did not want them to suddenly start seeing value in him because of his changes; he wanted to avoid all those kinds of people.

So he saw nothing wrong with preserving the contacts he had made after a month in the Muggle world working at that pub. It would be a great waste to simply discard them all, even if Mr. Wick had been an asshole to him in the end. He also knew how to deal with Vanessa's advances, who still wanted to sleep with him.

"You're still running away from me?" She laughed, noticing his indifference. "You know I can treat you like a little younger brother too."

"I prefer it this way." Severus replied.

She puffed her cheeks, but Severus looked at the menu.

"Why don't you get two coffees and some sandwiches? I'll pay." Severus said.

She nodded, not writing anything down for the order, while she walked to the counter, then returned with some sandwiches and coffee.

"So, you just left the pub...? Because, you simply disappeared and no one really knew what happened. Only Mr. Wick said you wouldn't be coming back to work anymore." She began, sitting in front of Severus. Even during work hours, business was slow and her coworker would cover for her.

"Obviously he didn't say exactly what happened." Severus mocked. "Tell me, have there been many losses at the pub lately?" Severus asked.

The older woman in front of him could not help widening her eyes. "Well... there's been a streak of bad luck at the pub these last few days... Mr. Wick is very worried. There hasn't been a single night without some kind of incident and losses for him." She said, looking at Severus with some suspicion.

Now Severus simply opened an innocent smile. "Well... that is surprising." He spoke slowly while drinking his coffee.

"You have nothing to do with that, right?" She asked, somewhat worried. Though unable to imagine how Severus could be doing something like that, because it was too supernatural.

"Me? Of course not." He lied. "I haven't shown up at the pub since the last time Mr. Wick refused to pay me." Severus mocked.

"He didn't pay you?"

"No, but it doesn't matter." Eight euros would not be a problem for him. The losses were far greater than the amount earned that week.

"Tell me... Jennifer and Mr. Wick, are they still together?" He asked again.

She widened her eyes. "Well... you don't know about them?"

"Hard not to see them making out in the alley behind the pub..." Severus mocked.

"That's true. Anyway, it happened two days ago... Jennifer has AIDS, her boyfriend broke up with her and she said she got it from Victor, from the band, you know?! Victor can't play there anymore and Jennifer was fired by Mr. Wick. That also reminds me that she was hitting on you, you're 16 years old, doesn't she see that?!" She spoke as if it were the biggest gossip in the world, but sounded outraged at the end.

'Aren't you doing the exact same thing?!' Severus mocked Vanessa. But Severus said nothing about it.

"I imagine Mr. Wick is quite worried about having AIDS as well... Right? After all, that Jennifer was sleeping with her boyfriend, with Victor and with Mr. Wick... And that's only from what I know..." Severus mocked.

Vanessa started laughing. "I had already forgotten how fun it is to gossip with you. Well... why should I be surprised? You're smarter than you look. I didn't want to say anything about it, but yes... there are rumors saying Mr. Wick has AIDS too, he looks paler than usual, maybe the streak of bad luck, maybe worried that his blood is contaminated... Who knows." She said laughing.

Severus wanted to laugh, but remained silent while organizing his thoughts. He had searched for this in Mr. Wick, a jealousy over someone Severus would never even get close to, and now he was in all that mess.

He finished his coffee while talking a little longer, until she finally reached the main reason she had called him. "You know, I didn't want to lose contact with you, but the boys asked to talk to you, they want to invite you to be the band's vocalist. Victor was kicked out after the whole mess."

"Are you serious?" Severus grimaced. He had not only played as a guitarist a few times, but had even sung some songs, and people had really liked him.

If he wanted, he could have a musical career in the Muggle world. He quite liked the rock and roll style of that era, very different from what he used to hear in a more medieval manner, with rhythms and musical styles that were more poetic, interpreting remarkable events and battles of heroes.

The sound of the songs was something more personal here, but Severus liked it. However, even though he could become successful, he would never pursue a career in the Muggle world as a singer or musician. Besides, he wanted to learn how to play piano and other instruments as well, he could do that at Hogwarts.

"Sorry, but I'm not interested. In a few days, I'm going to that reformatory I mentioned, where I study. I'll stay there, only being able to leave for two weeks at the end of the year, then I'll return until summer vacation. It's the only time I can stay out." He said.

She nodded with a certain pity. "Well... but if it's alright with you, I'd still like to keep in touch with you, Severus." She said.

Severus simply nodded while saying goodbye to her. She returned to work while he left the café.

Curiously, he went to the pub where he had worked and took out his wand, removing the curse he had placed on the establishment. He had already caused enough losses, something around 500 euros in equipment and all the problems he had caused Mr. Wick, who was now terrified by the fact he might have AIDS because of his mistress.

Severus then went to Oxonia, a city northwest of London, where he apparated and headed toward the Oxford University campus.

Why would he be here at six in the evening? Because he had been keeping in contact with one of the laboratory professors. Someone Severus had managed to get in touch with after reading some of his articles in scientific magazines, through the research Severus had been doing about the Muggle world.

He was not the only one, but this particular professor had read his letter and liked his questions, so he answered them. They had maintained contact throughout the last half month. He did not know much about Severus, since they had limited themselves only to conversation.

The subject? Nothing less than physics and nuclear energy. Severus was extremely interested in what humanity had achieved. In his old world there had been the Great Weirwood, which gave him energy. Although it was a sacred object, it could absorb a great amount of energy from the sun and transform it into magical energy, just like the Light Crystals he had created.

His crystals also contained some aspect of magic, not merely energy produced through photosynthesis as plants generally did, because it was a non-organic object charging under light, to emit light later and be used as a lantern.

Nuclear energy was something Severus could not ignore. A source of pure, practically 'infinite' energy. As someone who had built a kingdom like Arctic, how could he ignore the fact that something like this already existed?

Never in his past life had he thought of anything similar or even come close to it. And in the wizarding world, the closest thing to objects with immense energy was the Philosopher's Stone of the alchemist Flamel. But far more limited...

He entered the place and was stopped by a guard. "You, you don't seem to be a student, may I know what you are doing here?" He asked.

"I'm here to see Professor Xavier." Severus showed a letter from the professor himself asking to meet with him at six in the evening in his laboratory.

The man looked at it. He did not deny Severus entry, but neither did he let him walk freely and asked him to follow. Severus did not mind, simply following the man as they entered the place until finally arriving at the laboratory.

"Mr. Xavier, this boy said he has something for you."

The security guard approached with the letter. Mr. Xavier, who had been working on some things in the laboratory, looked surprised with a smile, but his eyes widened when he saw Severus.

A boy.

This whole time, a mere boy had been asking him all those intelligent questions? Questions his own students would never think of, with even himself having some difficulty answering them.

Severus stared at him, studying him, not caring that the man was surprised. He had expected at least some university student to be conducting some kind of research, or perhaps even some professional in the field.

Since Severus had not specifically said he was a sixteen-year-old boy, much less a wizard who had absolutely nothing to do with nuclear energy.

Professor Xavier wanted to meet him personally to ask who he was and where those questions came from, since they should have originated from some specific study or work. He expected to see a researcher, not a fifteen or sixteen-year-old boy standing behind a guard.

"You may leave us." Professor Xavier did not stop displaying a smile.

The man nodded and left the place, while both of them looked at each other.

"So you're the boy behind the questions."

"You could say that."

"You're interested in nuclear energy?" Professor Xavier murmured.

"More than that. I want to understand how the splitting of the atomic nucleus can release such an absurd amount of energy. Even if it seems almost infinite." Severus replied.

The man gave a small smile. "Well, then you must know the basics of how nuclear fission works."

"I only know the basics." Severus answered calmly. "The atom's nucleus splits and releases energy because it loses stability, correct?"

Professor Xavier raised an eyebrow, clearly surprised. "Basically, yes. When the nucleus of certain elements, like uranium, is split, a small part of the mass is directly converted into energy."

"And that small loss generates all that power?" Severus asked.

"Exactly. That's what makes nuclear energy so frightening. Tiny amounts of matter can generate enough energy to power entire cities."

"So humanity learned how to extract energy directly from the atomic nucleus..." He murmured.

"You speak of it as if it were something absurd."

"Because it is." Severus answered immediately. "From my point of view, it almost seems like an attempt to imitate the sun itself."

Professor Xavier let out a small laugh. "Actually, that's not too far from the truth. The sun also produces energy through nuclear reactions, although in a different way."

"Fusion." Severus answered quickly.

Now the man was genuinely surprised. "You know about nuclear fusion too?"

"A little. Unlike fission, it joins nuclei instead of breaking them apart."

Professor Xavier crossed his arms while observing Severus more carefully.

"You are definitely not an ordinary student."

"Perhaps I just like learning dangerous things." Severus replied with a small smile.

"Well... that certainly explains your letters."

Severus nodded while the professor continued answering his doubts, though he still left the man somewhat impressed.

"Very well. Let's sit down and talk for a while. Let me show you the laboratory. It's not every day that I see a boy with such a sharp mind."

He was more than satisfied with Severus's questions and answers. Based on the questions, he understood that the boy already comprehended a bit about the subject, but he would never imagine that Severus had only read a book a few days earlier before diving into a subject he had not even known existed until recently.

Severus had his own suspicions and conclusions based on the knowledge from his past life. Just as he understood part of the origin of magical energy, that also helped him understand a bit of Muggle energy, extracted directly from the fission of uranium's atomic nucleus, releasing a colossal amount of extremely dangerous radioactive energy.

Severus talked with Professor Xavier until midnight, asking several questions, leaving even the professor himself increasingly impressed with him.

"Well, I have to go now." He said after answering Severus's last question. "My wife is waiting for me at home. She's pregnant, so I can't stay much longer. But it was pleasant. I would like you to visit me again. I'm sure we can talk more. You must be a high school student, correct?"

He stood up while beginning to gather his things.

Severus nodded. "Yes, but I study at a reformatory, a rather closed one. I'll be going there tomorrow and won't return before winter, unfortunately. But, if the professor wishes, we can still communicate through letters." He said.

The man looked somewhat surprised by that. "Of course... And is this closed institution something I would know?" He asked curiously. Certainly a mind like this should flourish here instead of being in a place like that.

"It's Hogwarts... but it's a long story. I can't say much about it, but it's in Scotland, if you want to know. It's not very well known."

Severus gave an excuse, obviously. A university professor would never understand Hogwarts. But Hogwarts also used that name as the official designation of the reformatory, to tell Muggles who had doubts about where their relatives and neighbors were going. So there was no problem with Severus using that name.

The man nodded, despite the somewhat reluctant look in his eyes. Reformatories were for problematic people, he had never heard about Hogwarts and it was very strange for Severus to be receiving such an education, considering the mind he had just witnessed.

"Anyway, it's a little late. Let me give you a ride."

Severus nodded while they continued talking in the car, until the professor dropped him off at the London station.

"It was a pleasure, Mr. Severus."

"The pleasure was all mine, professor." Severus replied with a smile.

He liked the man. He reminded him of some of the professors from the University of Arctic. Perhaps he was not the smartest, but he was certainly one of the most enthusiastic.

With that, he got out of the car and headed to the station to catch a train, while Professor Xavier drove away. Severus, meanwhile, returned to the Leaky Cauldron, finding Articuno in his room.

"You finally came back." Articuno had not followed him because he knew Severus needed to be more discreet than having an unknown bird perched on his shoulder.

"Well, let's eat something and get you ready for tomorrow." Severus said, already thinking about going to King's Cross Station and Platform 9¾.

He would finally depart for Hogwarts. His vacation had ended, but he had done everything he wanted. He already had a good understanding, a much better one, of this world compared to the old Severus.

Both the Muggle world and the magical world itself.
