Li Jianye was shocked.

He was completely numb, his mind ringing like an iron bell.

To be honest, he felt as if he might not even be awake...

’What did I just see?’

A face.

A human face, on a dog’s body!

He had shone his flashlight on a dog foraging on the ground, a creature covered in fur, but when it turned its head, it revealed an unnervingly human-like, smiling face.

Insane!

The world has gone insane!

"Get it!"

It wasn’t until Xu Huo’s voice snapped him out of it that Li Jianye came to his senses. His face was drenched in cold sweat as he broke into a frantic run.

There was a dog in front of them. Its build wasn’t small, but it wasn’t the size of a Tibetan Mastiff either.

It wasn’t particularly fast or agile, and its noises sounded incredibly hoarse.

However, the terrain here made it difficult for Xu Huo and his partner to capture it.

Of course, that was assuming they couldn’t use lethal force. If they could... they would have shot it dead on sight.

Which meant that every time they were about to catch it, the creature would duck into a corner and slip out the other side.

Until...

Three blurry, dark figures holding flashlights appeared in the distance.

Xu Huo paused. When he saw who it was, a look of delight flashed in his eyes.

"Old Zhao, grab it!"

He yelled, and the black dog in front of them seemed to hear something. It shuddered and continued its stiff, headlong run, not noticing the people who had just appeared ahead.

"Grab who?"

Zhao Shui, who had just arrived on the scene, looked confused.

He glanced left and right but saw nothing, only Xu Huo and Li Jianye.

But then a swift, dark shadow suddenly flashed past him.

Zhao Shui instinctively shot out a hand to block it, managing to grab it and pin it beneath him.

"Got it!"

A look of delight flashed in his eyes, overjoyed as he felt the creature’s size.

As he said this, he shone his flashlight on it.

Black fur immediately filled his vision.

’So that means...’

’It’s a dog?’

’A black dog? It’s not a bad idea to keep a dog at a construction site. Usually, it’s for good luck.’

Zhao Shui thought to himself.

As he wondered how this dog had managed to offend Xu Huo and Li Jianye, the beam of his flashlight traveled upward.

It illuminated the neck, a collar, and then, amidst the fur...

A human face.

’This is...’

’What is this thing?!’

In an instant, Zhao Shui’s pupils contracted. The hand gripping the creature’s neck went weak, and his whole body trembled.

Sensing Zhao Shui’s grip loosen, the human-faced dog began to struggle violently.

He reacted to its struggle, using its momentum to throw it to the side, but the creature was already preparing to flee...

BANG!

A hand shot out from the darkness and viciously slapped it across the face.

The next second,

the black dog’s vision went dark, and it lost consciousness.

"Got it!"

Xu Huo retracted his hand, sighing in relief as he looked at the thing before him.

You can knock a person out with a blow, but the movie-style karate chop to the back of the neck definitely doesn’t work. If you actually tried to use that for an assassination... you’d just be serving yourself up on a platter.

Of course, this has nothing to do with the case.

"Holy shit, holy shit..."

Zhao Shui snatched his hand back as if electrocuted. His face was a mask of terror, his eyes staring at the thing in Xu Huo’s grasp as if he were seeing a ghost.

"What the fuck..."

"...is that thing!?"

"Boss, what is that thing?! Why the fuck does it have a human face?!"

Zhao Shui was completely stunned.

Just from that one glance, he was now gasping for breath, his chest heaving, and cold sweat poured uncontrollably from his forehead.

Li Jianye also looked at Xu Huo, not faring any better than Zhao Shui.

Are the police superstitious?

In a way, the police aren’t superstitious, but they are reverent.

Things like red eggs or stepping over basins of fire are pretty common these days.

Basically, every precinct has customs like these: after seeing or handling a dead body, you step over a fire to cleanse away bad luck, or you eat an egg to bring in some good fortune.

It’s just that they can’t afford to be superstitious when they’re investigating a case.

But right now...

What they were seeing really didn’t support a non-superstitious worldview!

A dog... with a human face!

’Has it become a spirit?’

’Can things still become spirits after the founding of the PRC?!’

Looking at the two terrified men before him, Xu Huo sniffed again and looked down at the "black dog" he was holding.

Xu Huo paused, then asked a terrifying counter-question.

"If I said... this is one of the missing family members, would you believe me?"

The missing... family member?

In a daze, the four police officers in front of him froze.

The air seemed to freeze in that moment, and the entire construction site fell into a dead silence.

Only the whistling of the cold night wind, like the wailing of ghosts, swirled around them.

"You’re saying..."

Li Jianye’s lips parted, his mouth dry. His dazed eyes stared in disbelief at what Xu Huo was holding.

"This is... a missing family member?"

Xu Huo nodded and said in a low voice,

"This is... a person."

...

...

Are there dogs in the world with human faces?

It depends. A naturally born one... might have a somewhat similar appearance due to coincidence, a probabilistic anomaly.

But what if the entire head was a human head?

And the body, a dog’s body?

Impossible. That would violate the fundamental laws of biology. There’s no way it could exist. If it did, it certainly wouldn’t be a creature from Blue Star, and it definitely couldn’t have been created with Blue Star’s technology!

However...

That only applies to nature.

Just as nature cannot produce a Megatron or an Ultraman, humanity can still ’create’ them in other ways.

By the same token, if a human-headed dog doesn’t appear in nature, then...

is it possible that a human could create one?

Not as a work of fiction, but a real, genuine monster with a human head and a dog’s body, created through artificial intervention!
