House of Blood
Chapter 66: Ashen Legacy
The High Sanctuary trembled as five hundred boots struck the scorched marble in flawless unison.
"Form the line!" Invictus’s voice shattered the silence, a roaring baritone laced with dragon-fire that shook the crumbling pillars of the cathedral.
Behind him, the Blood Shadow Legion moved like a singular, living machine of crimson steel. Five hundred tower shields slammed onto the floorboards, overlapping in a curved wall of draconian iron. The faint crimson runes etched into the metal ignited simultaneously, weaving a massive, interlocking aura barrier that sealed off the rear of the cathedral, completely enclosing Seraphina within an impregnable pocket of space.
Elizabeth snapped out of her momentary paralysis. Her abyssal eyes burned with a terrifying, wild desperation as she looked upon the army standing in her sanctuary.
"Vermin!" Elizabeth shrieked.
She thrust her open palms downward. The air above the altar folded in on itself before exploding into a cascading tsunami of black void-fire. Streams of razor-sharp dark arcana tore across the hall, hot enough to vaporize mountain granite, aimed directly at Valerian and his commanders.
"Atlas," Valerian commanded quietly from behind his black porcelain mask.
The massive tank knight stepped forward.
Standing nearly seven and a half feet tall, Atlas’s hulking, muscular frame shifted like a living mountain of scarred iron. His scorched dreadnought armor groaned under the tension of his massive shoulders as he thrust his colossal, fortress-class tower shield deep into the marble floor.
BOOM!
Atlas slammed his broad shoulder against the back of the shield, his massive, tree-trunk-sized arm locking into place. Crimson dragon-veins surged across his neck and arms, pulsing violently through his skin.
"Fortress of the Undying Sun!" Atlas roared, his voice like grinding tectonic plates.
A giant, golden-crimson crest erupted from the face of his shield, projecting a thick, kinetic bulwark that spanned thirty feet high. The tsunami of void-fire collided head-on with Atlas’s barrier.
SKRRRRRR-THOOM!
The heat was blinding. Void-fire washed over the energy barrier, melting the surrounding marble floor into bubbling black sludge, but Atlas did not yield an inch. His boot soles dug six-inch deep trenches into the stone, his teeth bared in a grimace of pure physical iron as he absorbed the entirety of a Demon Lord’s ultimate elemental strike on his broad shoulders.
"Is that all you have, witch?!" Atlas bellowed through the smoke, his massive war-cleaver raised high as he deflected the lingering embers into the ceiling.
Above the altar, Elizabeth’s breath caught in her throat. Her deadliest area-of-effect spell had been completely neutralized by a single frontline defender.
"Dark Knights! Obliterate them!" Elizabeth commanded, her voice strained as she directed her six elite abyssal summons.
The six Dark Knights of Abaddon lunged forward. Their eight-foot executioner greatswords crackled with dark, soul-eating arcana as they charged in a triangular wedge formation, intending to split the Blood Shadow Legion in half.
Invictus let out a cold, booming laugh. He raised his massive greatsword with one hand, pointing the tip directly at the advancing vanguard.
"Slaughter formation—Phalanx Breach!" Invictus ordered.
The Legion answered instantly. The front line of shadow-knights parted smoothly, opening narrow lanes through their shield wall.
"Atlas, hold the flank!" Invictus bellowed as he lunged into the fray.
Atlas swung his colossal war-cleaver in a low, sweeping horizontal arc. The kinetic force behind the blow produced a sonic boom that shattered two of the advancing Dark Knights’ guards, forcing their heavy obsidian armor to skid sideways and breaking their wedge formation.
Before the fallen paladins could recover, Invictus was already upon them.
The crimson general moved with terrifying speed for a man of his size. His massive greatsword erupted in white-hot dragon-fire as he brought it down in a vertical executioner’s strike.
CLANG-SHATTER!
The blade cleaved through the first Dark Knight’s obsidian chest plate like parchment, splitting the corrupted armor and the soul within into burning embers. Without pausing his momentum, Invictus spun on his heel, using the flat of his blade to smash the second Dark Knight directly into the path of the Legion.
"Engage!" the legion captains barked.
The five hundred knights surged through the breaches. Three shadow-knights pinned each Dark Knight’s greatsword with their overlapping tower shields, while the secondary line thrust their longswords through the joints of the abyssal armor. Dragon-fire poured into the gaps, burning the corrupted souls from the inside out.
CRACK! BAM! SHATTER!
In less than forty seconds, under the flawless, ruthless coordination of Invictus and the unyielding physical wall of Atlas, all six elite summons of Abaddon were reduced to heaps of melting iron and vanishing black ash.
Elizabeth’s four black wings flapped wildly as she retreated higher into the air, her face pale, her lips trembling as her summons were completely erased.
"Impossible... five hundred years... I cannot be brought down by a mortal’s shadow—"
SWOOSH.
The air behind her turned cold.
Elizabeth’s eyes dilated.
She didn’t even hear the footsteps, nor did she feel the spatial displacement.
Valerian was standing directly behind her, airborne, floating in the fold of a shadow-step. His black porcelain mask reflected the dying embers of the cathedral, his slitted crimson eyes cold, empty, and absolute.
In his hands, his charcoal staff had morphed into a single, needle-thin silver estoc—a weapon designed for a single purpose: absolute, unparryable penetration.
"Your time ended five hundred years ago," Valerian whispered softly.
THICK-SPURT!
With a swift, mathematical thrust, Valerian drove the silver blade straight through the back of Elizabeth’s chest, piercing her collarbone and plunging deep into her corrupted heart.
The spatial energy woven into the blade detonated upon impact, severing her connection to the abyssal ley-lines. The dark storm of void-fire swirling above the cathedral instantly evaporated, leaving behind a dead, heavy silence.
Valerian held the hilt firm, his shadow-wings hovering briefly to keep them suspended in the air.
He expected a scream.
He expected a curse, or a final release of explosive dark magic as the Tenth Demon Lord perished.
Instead, Elizabeth let out a soft, breathy sound.
It was a laugh.
It was a quiet, weak, and strangely delicate smile that spread across her pale, ivory lips as she looked down at the silver blade protruding from her chest.
"I’m surprised... you didn’t notice," Elizabeth whispered, her voice barely audible over the crackle of lingering ash.
Valerian’s slitted crimson eyes narrowed behind his black mask.
Elizabeth turned her head slightly, her fading abyssal eyes looking sideways at him with a strange, tragic amused light.
"Well... even the other Demon Lords don’t know this," she choked out, a thin stream of black blood leaking from the corner of her smile.
"This... is not my real body. My real body... was always my bloodline."
Valerian’s eyes widened.
"What?"
Before he could pull the blade free or trigger a spatial collapse, Elizabeth’s physical vessel began to disintegrate into fine, glittering silver dust—not black ash, but pure, uncorrupted, ancient divine particles.
Her four black wings dissolved into light, her silver hair turned to ethereal mist, and her hollow shell vanished into empty air.
The silver dust didn’t fall to the floorboards.
As if guided by an ancient, tragic instinct, the vast cloud of glowing silver and tainted dark arcana surged across the High Sanctuary, bypassing Valerian, bypassing Atlas, and bypassing the five hundred knights of the Blood Shadow Legion.
It flew straight toward the rear of the cathedral, aiming directly for the terrified, trembling girl standing behind the shattered pillar.
"Seraphina!" Valerian roared, abandoning his aerial stance and shadow-stepping across the room.
It was too late.
The cloud of silver dust and dark arcana slammed straight into Seraphina’s chest.
"Ah... AHH!"
Seraphina let out a sharp, agonizing scream as she was lifted off her feet, suspended three feet in the air.
The broken messaging crystal in her hand shattered into dust.
Her ceremonial white robes whipped violently as the lingering soul, memories, and corrupted bloodline of the Tenth Demon Lord poured directly into her heart.
"Seraphina!"
Valerian reappeared right beside her, reaching out his hand to pull her free from the vortex, but an invisible, ancient shockwave blasted outward, forcing even his heavy stance back three paces.
Seraphina’s golden hair flared wildly, its bright blonde color slowly darkening at the tips into a midnight-silver hue.
Her sapphire blue eyes—normally filled with pure, gentle holy light—snapped open.
Deep within her pupils, a dark, bruised violet ring ignited, crackling with faint, lingering wisps of void-fire.
The pure, golden holy energy radiating from her skin twisted, turning into a strange, volatile hybrid of divine light and abyssal shadow—tainted, corrupted, and irrevocably altered.
THUD.
The light vanished, and Seraphina collapsed onto the cold marble floor, gasping for air as she clutched her chest.
Silence returned to the ruined High Sanctuary.
The Blood Shadow Legion stood in silent, rigid formation around the perimeter, their shields low.
Invictus rested his greatsword against the stone, his blazing red eyes fixed on the fallen Saintess, while Atlas took a heavy step back, his massive iron-armored frame casting a long shadow over the scene.
Valerian slowly walked forward, his boots making quiet steps against the cracked stone.
He knelt beside Seraphina, reaching down to lift her face.
Seraphina looked up at his black porcelain mask.
She was breathing heavily, tears welling in her eyes, but beneath the tears, the dark violet ring in her sapphire pupils pulsed with a quiet, ancient power.
"Valerian..." she whispered, her voice shivering, layered with a strange, faint echo that wasn’t entirely her own.
"What... what’s happening to me?"
