House of Blood

Chapter 138: Thermal Release

  • Next Chapter

The heavy iron portcullis of the western tunnel groaned as it ground upward into the slate archway.

Afternoon sunlight struck the Sunken Arena at a sharp angle, casting long shadows across the basalt combat floor. Above, tens of thousands of spectators filled the stone tiers, their chants rolling like thunder against the high marble buttresses.

Cell One marched onto the arena floor in a tight, disciplined wedge.

Solene held the point, her white cape pinned with the silver Directorate emblem. To her left, Casper rolled his shoulders, his hands resting on the grips of his twin arming swords. To her right, Lyra walked with her focus staff held upright, the blue geometric runes of her Medeis soul circle glowing faintly beneath her skin.

Behind them stood Castor and Pollux, two immovable pillars of dark iron.

Valerian brought up the rear, his dark linen blindfold in place. His leather ledger lay open in his left hand, while his iron stylus rested lightly between the fingers of his right.

From the eastern tunnel, the Crimson Guard emerged.

They were massive warriors clad from head to toe in thick, Third-Tier Iron-Mithril plate. Their heavy tower shields were square and reinforced with glowing brass conduits that hummed with a low, resonant vibration as the three shield-bearers interlocked them side by side.

Behind the shield wall marched two heavy halberdiers, their broad-bladed weapons resting across their pauldrons.

"Look at those shields," Casper muttered. "They look like steel vault doors."

"They weigh eighty-five pounds each," Castor replied, his deep voice calm and even. He held his war-mattock across his chest. "Built to absorb kinetic shock, not deflect it."

"Remember the cooling cycle," Solene reminded them, her blue eyes fixed on the opposing formation. "Castor sets the rhythm. Nobody rushes until the third strike."

Across thirty yards of basalt, the Crimson Guard’s captain lowered his visor with a sharp metallic clatter. ℯℓ.

Varek was a hulking warrior whose armor appeared almost too heavy for an ordinary man to wear.

"Sector Zero!" His muffled voice boomed from behind his iron grille. "Your cute tricks against House Aurelius won’t work on real plate! We don’t use spatial runes, and we don’t give up ground!"

"We don’t need you to give up ground, Varek," Solene called back, her voice carrying clearly across the arena. "We just need your thermal vents to open."

The Crimson Guard didn’t respond.

Instead, the three vanguard knights slammed their tower shields against the basalt floor simultaneously.

CLANG!

A wave of blue kinetic force rippled outward from the interlocking brass conduits. The three shields locked together, forming a single, continuous wall of Iron-Mithril.

High above, Representative Mirain rose from the High Bench and lifted his white signal flag.

"Quarterfinal Match Two!" His voice echoed through the spatial speakers. "Cell One versus the Crimson Guard! Combatants, brace your lines!"

The flag dropped.

CLANG!

"BEGIN!"

"Phalanx March!" Varek bellowed.

The three shield knights advanced in synchronized formation. Their iron boots struck the basalt with deafening thuds, while the kinetic dampeners in their armor hummed like a swarm of insects.

"Casper, draw the halberdiers!" Solene ordered.

"Already on it!"

Casper darted toward the wide left flank in a burst of rapid footwork.

The two halberdiers immediately broke away from behind the shield wall, swinging their broad-bladed polearms in sweeping arcs to intercept him.

Casper ducked beneath the first swing. His twin arming swords flashed, striking the halberd shaft and forcing its wielder to adjust his grip.

He kept moving, drawing both heavy fighters farther toward the outer perimeter and away from their captain. ℯℓ.

"Lyra, lock their footing!"

Lyra slammed the butt of her focus staff against the basalt.

THUMP!

Geometric circles flared around her wrists as her Medeis soul circle blazed into life.

A surge of pressurized mana spread across the stone, coating the ground beneath the Crimson Guard’s boots with a thin layer of condensed spirit-frost.

The lead shield-bearer slid two inches.

"Hold the line!" Varek barked. "Kinetic locks at maximum!"

The brass conduits brightened as the three knights reinforced their formation.

"Castor!" Solene called. "Now!"

Castor stepped forward.

He didn’t rush. He took three deliberate strides, raised his massive war-mattock over his right shoulder, and planted his feet.

"Strike One," Valerian announced from the backline.

His voice remained completely flat, untroubled by the roaring crowd.

Castor brought the iron pole-head down with the full force of his massive frame.

BOOOOOM!

The war-mattock struck the center seam of the interlocked shields.

Yellow sparks erupted from the brass conduits as the kinetic dampeners absorbed the impact. The center knight groaned beneath the shock, his knees buckling by an inch, but the magnetic lock held.

"Is that all you’ve got, big man?!" Varek roared.

Valerian dipped his stylus into his ink bottle.

"Strike Two."

Castor didn’t pause.

He pivoted on his heel, using the recoil of the first strike to swing the mattock back around in a devastating horizontal arc.

CRACK-BOOM!

The iron head slammed into precisely the same point on the center shield seam.

The brass conduits flared from yellow to dark orange.

A high-pitched hiss escaped the armor’s elbow joints as heat accumulated within the mithril cores.

"Thermal warning!" the knight behind the center shield gasped. His arms trembled beneath the weight of his plate. "The vents are overheating!"

"Hold it for one more second!" Varek shouted.

"Solene," Valerian called, cutting through the hiss of escaping steam. "The third cycle is approaching. The vent will open at twelve o’clock, six inches below the neck guard."

Solene moved before he finished speaking.

She stepped through the gap beside Castor’s shoulder, drawing her slender rapier back like a coiled spring.

"Strike Three," Valerian announced.

Castor adjusted his grip and brought the mattock down in a short, brutal chop against the upper rim of the center shield.

BOOOOM!

The kinetic dampeners reached their limit.

A sharp hiss tore through the arena as the central chest plate’s cooling valve snapped open. For half a second, a cloud of scalding white steam burst from the vent, protecting the mithril core from melting.

That was all Solene needed.

Through the blinding cloud, her rapier flashed.

THWIP!

The narrow tip passed through the exposed three-inch cooling vent and pierced the internal mana lock with microscopic precision.

CRACK-SPARK!

The magnetic circuit binding the three shields together shattered.

The glowing brass conduits went dark, and the tower shields disconnected. One after another, they crashed sideways onto the basalt floor.

Varek stared through his visor.

"What... How did she find the valve through the steam?!"

"She didn’t find it, Varek," Pollux replied, stepping forward. "She was told where it would be."

She drove the pommel of her hunting knife into the gap beneath his chest guard.

THUD!

The strike caught Varek off balance. With his shield formation broken and his heavy armor working against him, he stumbled backward, his boots scraping uselessly across the basalt.

He crossed the thick white boundary line and crashed onto the arena floor beyond it.

"Boundary forfeit!" the referee called, lowering his white flag. "Captain Varek is eliminated!"

On the left flank, Casper saw Varek go down.

He used the shaft of an incoming halberd to vault backward, landing cleanly beside Lyra.

The remaining two shield knights looked at the broken formation, then at Castor’s raised mattock, and finally at Solene, who calmly wiped a bead of condensation from her rapier with a silk handkerchief.

Slowly, both knights lowered their weapons and raised their gauntleted hands.

"We yield," the lead knight muttered through his grille.

CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!

"Match complete!" Representative Mirain declared from the High Bench, his voice echoing over the crowd’s thunderous cheers. "Victory in Quarterfinal Match Two goes to Cell One of Sector Zero! Match duration: three minutes, twelve seconds!"

The arena erupted.

Spectators rose from their seats, waving regional banners as Cell One’s match time flashed in bold gold letters across the floating projection slates.

"Three minutes and twelve seconds," Valerian read, drawing a clean line beneath the entry in his ledger. "Operational efficiency: ninety-six percent. Mana reserves remaining: eighty-eight percent."

Casper laughed as he sheathed his swords and jogged over to slap Castor’s massive iron pauldron.

"Did you see that valve blow? It looked like an old teapot!"

"The armor was thick," Castor replied.

He unbuckled his helm and released a long breath.

"Good call on the timing, Scribe."

"The blueprint specifications were accurate," Valerian said, slipping his stylus back into his sleeve.

Lyra approached Solene, her soul circles fading to a faint shimmer beneath her skin.

"That places us in the semifinals, Princess."

"It does."

Solene looked toward the High Spire, where her father’s imperial flags fluttered in the afternoon wind.

"We’re in the top four."

---

An hour later, Cell One returned to its holding suite in the northern wing to prepare for the evening draw.

Casper had already claimed a leather lounge chair and was eating another plate of cold venison. Castor was checking the haft of his war-mattock, while Pollux cleaned her hunting knife.

Lyra sat near the window, reviewing the tournament bracket with Solene.

Then came a soft, urgent knock.

Castor crossed the room and opened the door just far enough to inspect the visitor.

A female courier stood outside, dressed in the dark velvet robes of the High Temple. Her face was concealed beneath a deep white hood embroidered with silver thread.

"A message for Scribe Valerian," she whispered. Her voice trembled slightly. "From the Sacred Audit Vault."

Castor studied her for a moment before accepting the small, wax-sealed parchment.

He closed the door and handed it to Valerian.

Valerian broke the seal, his fingertips tracing the raised ink lines as he read.

Solene watched him closely.

"What is it, Valen? Another demand from the Civil Bureau?"

"No."

Valerian folded the parchment.

"An administrative summons from the High Temple. The Sacred Audit Vault has reported an unaccounted mana discrepancy in the divine treasury records."

"A divine treasury audit?" Lyra asked, her eyes widening. "That’s Saintess Seraphina’s domain!"

"Yes." Valerian’s expression grew more serious. "Saintess Seraphina has personally requested my presence to review the ledgers before the evening ceremony."

Solene studied him for a moment.

"Go, Valen. Take Castor with you for security. The High Temple’s ledgers are as dangerous as any battlefield."

"Understood."

Valerian adjusted his linen blindfold and tucked his leather ledger securely beneath his arm.

"Castor, bring your mattock."

He turned toward the door.

"It appears the divine numbers require verification."
