House of Blood

Chapter 134: Opening Call

  • Next Chapter

The morning heat over the Central Capital Spire was cut by the sharp breeze blowing off the surrounding peaks.

Deep beneath the white marble arcades of the High Court, the Sunken Arena opened like a colossal stone bowl.

Tens of thousands of spectators filled the steep, concentric tiers, their rising chants bouncing off the spell-reinforced slate walls.

In the sky above the open-air center, giant floating projection slates flickered with the emblems of the sixteen qualifying districts.

Cell One stood in the dark shadow of the northern staging tunnel, waiting behind heavy bronze gates.

Solene stood at the head of the formation, her white cape pinned with the silver emblem of the Eastern Audit Directorate.

Her posture was completely composed, carrying the unmistakable authority of her father, Emperor Aurelius Sol.

To her right, Casper bounced lightly on the balls of his feet, checking the spring tension on his arming swords for the fifth time in ten minutes.

Lyra stood beside him, her hands folded neatly over her focus staff. Beneath the thin skin of her forearms and neck, the blue geometric runes of her second-tier soul circle pulsed with a quiet, steady light.

Behind them, Castor and Pollux formed a wall of dark iron and slate armor.

Castor held his war-mattock resting against his shoulder, while Pollux adjusted the leather straps on her secondary hunting knife.

Valerian stood in the center, his dark linen blindfold secured, his leather ledger tucked firmly under his arm.

His iron stylus rested between his index and middle fingers.

"The spatial dampeners in the arena floor are running at eighty-five percent capacity," Lyra noted softly, her eyes fixed on the glowing runes surrounding the perimeter gates. "It feels different from Sector Zero’s trial floor."

"The ground layer is solid basalt over crushed granite," Castor said, his deep voice carrying easily over the roar of the crowd. "It won’t give under heavy footwork. The bounce is rigid."

"Which means Casper needs to keep his heels down," Pollux added, her amber eyes scanning the opposite staging tunnel. "Or his opening stride will carry two inches too far."

"I heard you the first three times, Pollux," Casper grumbled.

He quietly shifted his stance to rest his weight on his forefoot.

"I’m ready."

"Cell One."

Solene spoke, her voice calm and absolute as she turned to face her squad.

"The opening draw determines our placement in the main bracket. We expect House Aurelius to attempt a direct challenge if the rules permit open calls."

"Kael will try to force an immediate match," Lyra said.

The soul circles beneath her skin brightened slightly as her mana adjusted to the arena’s pressure.

"He wants to prove yesterday’s audit score was a fluke before we adjust to the arena."

"Let him call," Solene said.

She looked toward Valerian.

"Scribe, are the roster submissions verified?"

"Verified and stamped by Senior Scribe Vance at seven-thirty."

Valerian tapped his stylus against the wooden spine of his ledger.

"House Aurelius submitted their secondary reserve list twelve minutes late. Vance charged them a twenty-gold administrative penalty on the public board."

Casper burst out laughing.

"You’re kidding. Before they even step on the sand?"

"Administrative regulations apply to all district delegates, Casper," Valerian stated plainly.

He paused.

"Even spatial mages from House Aurelius."

A massive, reverberating horn echoed across the Sunken Arena.

BOOOOOOM—RRRRUMBLE!

The heavy bronze gates before them groaned as iron chains dragged the doors upward into the stone archway.

Bright sunlight flooded the dark tunnel entrance.

"Delegates of the Grand Trial!"

A booming voice echoed from the high platform via spatial amplification runes.

"Presenting the Top Seeds of the Sixteen Districts!"

"Formation tight."

Solene drew her rapier halfway from its sheath before snapping it back into the scabbard with a crisp clack.

"March."

Cell One stepped out from the shadow of the tunnel into the blinding light of the arena floor.

The crowd erupted into a deafening roar.

High on the eastern balcony, colorful banners bearing the crests of the high houses fluttered in the wind.

On the western terrace, senior scribes and district representatives sat behind long marble desks, their quills ready over official trial ledgers.

As Cell One reached the designated stone circle at the northern edge of the central floor, another gate swung open across the arena.

Kael marched out at the head of House Aurelius’s squad.

He wore a crisp green coat trimmed with silver lace over light mithril chainmail.

To his right walked his primary spatial mage, Aaron, whose hands were wrapped in leather bands covered in glowing displacement glyphs.

Three heavy vanguard fighters clad in gray dragon-scale armor followed close behind.

Kael’s eyes locked onto Solene instantly, a sharp, arrogant smile touching his lips.

As his squad reached their circle, he glanced toward Lyra, his eyes lingering on the blue light pulsing beneath her skin.

"The Medeis soul circles look bright today, Lyra," Kael called out across the thirty-yard gap between their circles, his voice carried by the arena’s natural acoustic bowl.

"Did your clan elders forge those runic inscriptions just for this provincial excursion?"

Lyra didn’t flinch.

She kept her posture straight, her focus staff resting firmly on the basalt floor.

"The Medeis family inscribes truth onto the soul, Kael."

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

"Yours relies on borrowed spatial trinkets and delayed payments to the Central Registry."

A few chuckles broke out among the scribes sitting on the western terrace.

Kael’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second.

His jaw tightened slightly.

"Silence on the floor!"

The Herald’s voice boomed from the central high box.

Representative Mirain stood up from the central auditing desk, flanked by four senior scribes wearing the official dark-blue robes of the High Court.

He unrolled a long parchment scroll stamped with Emperor Aurelius Sol’s golden imperial seal.

"By mandate of the Supreme Auditing Bench and the Imperial Throne," Mirain announced, his voice echoing across the silent amphitheater, "the bracket for the First Stage of the Grand Trial shall be decided by direct challenge for the top four seeds."

"Direct challenge," Casper muttered under his breath.

"He got his wish."

"Under Section Twelve of the Trial Code," Mirain continued, "the third-seeded team—Cell One of Sector Zero—holds the right to issue or accept the opening match call."

Mirain looked down from the high balcony, his eyes fixing on Solene.

"Princess Solene of Cell One. Do you claim your right to issue the first challenge, or do you yield the floor to the fourth seed?"

Before Solene could speak, Kael stepped forward to the very edge of his stone circle, raising his right hand high.

"House Aurelius formally challenges Cell One!"

Kael’s declaration rang across the arena.

"We challenge their seat, their administrative score, and their right to stand on the upper bracket!"

The crowd gasped.

Then they erupted into cheers.

The floating projection slates flickered, displaying the crests of Cell One and House Aurelius side by side.

Mirain looked down at Solene.

"Princess Solene. House Aurelius has issued a direct challenge for the opening match. Do you accept, or do you exercise your seed privilege to select an alternate opponent?"

Solene turned her head slightly toward Valerian.

"Scribe?"

Her voice remained calm.

"What do the numbers say?"

Valerian did not open his ledger.

He stood with his hands folded neatly over his wool coat, his dark blindfold facing the center platform.

"Accepting the challenge immediately yields a three-percent tactical advantage."

His tone was perfectly measured.

"House Aurelius prepared their opening formation under the assumption that we would decline to buy time for spatial adjustment. Their spatial mage, Aaron, has already channeled six percent of his core mana into his primary displacement runes."

Valerian tilted his head slightly.

"If the match is delayed, that mana dissipates unused."

"And if we accept right now?" Solene asked.

"Then his core operates at an immediate deficit."

A faint pause.

"And Casper gets his opening stride."

Solene turned back toward the Supreme Auditor’s desk.

Her voice rang clearly across the entire arena.

"Cell One accepts the challenge of House Aurelius."

The crowd erupted into a thunderous roar.

The floating projection slates flashed bright gold, locking the match banner into place.

MATCH ONE: CELL ONE (SECTOR ZERO) VS. HOUSE AURELIUS (SECTOR THREE)

"The challenge is locked!"

Mirain declared, striking his brass bell once.

CLANG!

"Teams, take your combat positions on the central basalt matrix. Match rules: standard elimination, spatial boundary forfeit, or complete submission."

Both squads moved toward the center of the vast arena floor.

The stone matrix beneath their feet was etched with massive, concentric white lines indicating the active combat boundary.

Kael drew his narrow, silver-hilted rapier, its blade shimmering with a thin, violent edge of spatial mana.

Behind him, Aaron raised both hands, the displacement glyphs on his wraps glowing a bright, erratic orange.

"Remember the plan," Kael muttered to his squad, his voice low and sharp.

"Aaron, drop behind their blind scribe the moment the barrier drops. Cut their support unit first."

"Understood," Aaron whispered.

His fingers twitched as he prepared the spatial anchor.

Across the thirty-yard gap, Cell One formed their line.

Castor and Pollux stepped to the front, their heavy shields interlocking to form a wall of dark iron.

Casper slotted in directly behind Castor’s right shoulder, his twin arming swords drawn and held low.

Lyra took her position behind Pollux, her focus staff held vertically.

Faint geometric circles spun slowly in the air around her wrists as the soul-runes beneath her skin resonated in complete harmony with her staff’s spatial gems.

Solene stood in the center, her rapier held in a low, classical guard.

Valerian stood two paces behind Solene, completely unbothered by the screaming crowd or the glowing mana barriers rising around the perimeter of the field.

"Aaron’s spatial anchor is locked on your left shoulder, Scribe," Lyra reported quietly, her eyes tracking the invisible mana threads stretching across the floor.

"I am aware," Valerian replied smoothly.

"He placed the anchor three inches too close to Castor’s swing radius. His spatial geometry is rushed."

"Castor."

Solene’s voice was barely above a whisper.

"When the mage drops behind Valen, do not turn around."

Castor didn’t move an inch.

"Understood, Princess."

"Pollux, take Kael’s right flank."

Solene’s gaze shifted.

"Casper, drive straight through their center vanguard the second Aaron’s displacement fails."

"With pleasure."

Casper grinned, his thumbs lightly tracing the guards of his hilts.

High above the arena floor, the head referee raised a glowing white flag.

"Combatants!"

The referee’s voice boomed across the floor.

"Draw your steel! Activate your cores!"

Kael lowered his stance, his silver rapier pointing straight at Solene’s heart.

"Let’s see your grand ledger save you now, Auditor!"

Valerian adjusted his wool collar with one hand, his posture perfectly calm.

"The ledger does not save anyone, Kael."

A faint smile touched his lips.

"It merely records the outcome."

The referee dropped the flag.

"BEGIN!"

BOOM!

The boundary barriers flared into brilliant blue light.

Instantly, Aaron slammed his hands together.

The orange displacement glyphs on his arms flared violently as a tear in the spatial air opened directly behind Valerian’s back.

"Spatial Swap: Position One!"

Aaron roared.

A sudden gust of compressed air erupted behind Valerian as Aaron’s body vanished from House Aurelius’s backline.

He reappeared three feet behind the blind scribe, a glowing spatial dagger raised for a lethal strike.

"Got you!"

Valerian didn’t even turn around.

He simply took half a step to the left, his scuffed boot shifting smoothly across the slate.

WHOOSH! ℯℯ𝑙.

Aaron’s dagger cut empty air, missing Valerian’s shoulder by a fraction of an inch.

Before the spatial mage could recover his balance, Pollux didn’t even look back.

She simply drove the heavy iron pommel of her secondary hunting knife backward over her shoulder in a blind, precise strike.

CRACK!

The iron pommel struck Aaron directly in the center of his throat guard.

The spatial mage let out a choked gasp.

His eyes rolled back as his displacement core backfired from the sudden physical shock.

The orange glyphs on his arms shattered into useless sparks, and he collapsed heavily onto the basalt floor at Valerian’s feet.

"Zero waste," Pollux murmured.

She slid her knife back into its belt sheath without breaking her forward stance.

Across the field, Kael’s eyes went wide with shock.

His primary spatial mage had been dropped in less than two seconds.

"What?!"

He stared at Aaron.

"How did she hit him without looking?!"

"His spatial anchor was misaligned by three inches, Kael."

Valerian’s voice carried smoothly over the roar of the arena.

He reached into his coat and pulled out his three-copper stylus.

"As I told you yesterday..."

He raised the stylus slightly.

"Your math is sloppy."

"Cell One!"

Solene’s voice echoed across the field like a silver trumpet.

"Advance!"

"Charging!"

Casper yelled.

He leapt forward through the gap in Castor’s shield wall as Cell One descended upon House Aurelius’s shattered front line.
