Chapter 2790: Story 2791: The Heartbeat Outside Time
Lyra clutched her chest.
The seventh heartbeat thundered beneath her ribs, each pulse sending silver light through her veins. She staggered, and Ronan reached for her, but his hand stopped inches from her shoulder.
Time remained frozen around them.
Elias hung motionless beside a broken pillar. Aren’s silver chains floated in the air. Darian’s violet flames had become still flowers of fire, their petals suspended forever.
Only Lyra, Ronan, and the six-eyed child could move.
And Seratha.
The First Mother slowly lifted her head.
“No,” she whispered. “Not you.”
Lyra looked at her trembling hands. “What is happening to me?”
Seratha approached cautiously, as though coming near a sleeping beast.
“The seventh heartbeat belonged to the child we never buried.”
The six-eyed boy laughed softly.
“There was never a grave for her.”
His golden eyes shifted toward Lyra.
“Because she was never dead.”
Lyra stumbled backward. “I’m not your sister.”
“You have always been my sister.”
The boy pointed toward the sea of stars beneath the broken floor.
Every face turned toward Lyra. Thousands of dead souls opened their mouths, but no sound emerged.
Then Lyra heard them.
Their names flooded her mind—forgotten kings, murdered children, nameless soldiers, and people erased before history could remember them. She felt every death as a distant ache, every lost memory as a hand reaching for her.
She fell to her knees.
“Make it stop!”
Ronan tried to move, but invisible chains tightened around his limbs.
“Leave her alone!”
The six-eyed child regarded him with quiet disappointment.
“You still think you can protect everyone.”
He touched the golden heart suspended in his chest.
“You couldn’t protect me.”
Ronan’s face twisted with pain.
“I know.”
The answer silenced the child.
For the first time, the six golden eyes blinked unevenly.
Ronan lowered his head.
“I remember killing you. I remember believing it would save creation. But I don’t remember why I chose the world over my own brother.”
“Because I asked you to.”
The child’s voice had changed. Beneath the ancient fury, something small and wounded had surfaced.
“I begged you to end me before I became the thing Father feared.”
Ronan stared at him.
“What were you becoming?”
The child opened his mouth.
Nothing emerged.
A crack appeared across his golden heart.
Seratha screamed. “Don’t let him remember!”
But the seventh heartbeat grew louder.
Lyra suddenly understood. The names inside her were not merely memories. They were pieces of a truth that had been scattered across creation.
She reached toward the child.
“Your name,” she whispered. “Tell me your name.”
The creature beyond the doorway stirred, its empty eyes opening despite time’s frozen grip.
“No!” it roared. “She must never speak it!”
Lyra looked directly at the six-eyed boy.
“I can hear you beneath all those memories.”
Tears slipped down his face.
“My name was—”
The golden heart shattered.
A soundless explosion swept across the chamber. The stars beneath the floor turned white, and every frozen shadow pointed toward Lyra.
Ronan felt the crown’s final fragments burn against his skin.
Then the child vanished.
In his place stood a towering figure wrapped in silver wings, its face hidden behind a mask of living names.
Lyra rose slowly.
The figure bowed before her.
And from behind its mask came a voice older than creation.
“My queen, the war you ended has begun again.”
