Chapter 2785: Story 2786: The Thing Beyond the Door

The eyes opened wider.

They were not golden, red, or black. They were empty—two vast holes in existence where even light seemed afraid to enter.

The mountain stopped shaking.

For one impossible moment, every sound vanished. Elias’s chains fell silent. Aren’s silver barriers dissolved into dust. Darian opened his mouth to scream, but no sound emerged.

Ronan felt the crown tighten around his skull.

Something inside it whispered his name.

Then the whisper changed.

It spoke a name Ronan had never heard, yet his heart recognized it.

“Azharel.”

The forgotten child inside him recoiled.

Don’t answer, the boy warned. Whatever you do, don’t answer it.

The Father staggered backward from the doorway. His six burning eyes dimmed, and the black hollow in his chest began to bleed crimson light.

“You were sealed before the first kingdom,” he murmured. “Before death had a name. Before I learned to fear my own children.”

From beyond the door came a sound like countless pages turning.

Then a voice spoke.

“Little Father.”

The ancient being froze.

Ronan stared at him. “Little?”

The Father looked at Ronan with unbearable sorrow.

“I was the first thing it created,” he whispered. “And the first thing it tried to erase.”

A long, pale finger curled around the edge of the golden door.

The metal bent like soft wax.

Seratha suddenly dropped to her knees. Her white hair spread across the cracked stone, and the red mist surrounding her body gathered into the shape of a broken heart.

“No,” she breathed. “The prison was never meant to keep it inside.”

The Firstborn turned toward her. “What are you saying?”

“It was meant to keep everything else outside.”

The door exploded.

A wave of darkness swept through the throne room, swallowing the kneeling dead. Their bodies vanished, but their shadows remained, stretching toward Ronan as though they had recognized their master.

His sword jerked upward.

The crown blazed.

Every shadow in the chamber bent toward him.

“No!” Lyra screamed from behind the barrier.

Ronan struggled against the invisible force. “Stay back!”

But Lyra seized the broken remains of her bow and drove its jagged edge into the barrier. The wood splintered. Blood ran down her arms, yet a narrow crack appeared.

She forced her hand through.

“Ronan, listen to me! You are not a crown. You are not a king. You are the man who promised he would get us out alive!”

Her words pierced the silence.

Ronan’s fingers loosened around the sword.

For one heartbeat, the crown’s grip weakened.

Then the thing beyond the door spoke again.

“My stolen heart has returned to me.”

Ronan’s chest burned. Beneath his ribs, two heartbeats became three.

The forgotten child screamed inside his mind.

It knows where I am!

The Father lunged toward Ronan, but a black tendril erupted from the doorway and pierced his back. His body arched as ancient light poured from his mouth.

“Take the crown off him!” he roared. “Before it remembers what you truly are!”

The Firstborn reached for Ronan, but golden chains burst from the floor and wrapped around his limbs.

Seratha lifted her face.

“Forgive me,” she whispered to Ronan.

Then she plunged both hands into her own chest and tore out a glowing red heart.

The entire mountain screamed.

Ronan watched in horror as she held the heart toward him.

“Mother,” he whispered. “What have you done?”

Seratha’s eyes filled with tears.

“I gave you his heart to save your life.”

Behind her, the thing beyond the door smiled with a mouth that had never existed.

“Now,” it said, “give me back my son.”
