Chapter 253: Chapter 253 The Name He Called

Inside the treatment room, the medical team worked quickly. They started an IV, checked Serena’s blood pressure, and ordered emergency imaging and bloodwork. The amount of blood loss was far greater than the doctors expected from a fall alone.

The attending physician studied the results, her mouth tightening.

The pattern suggested that the bleeding might have started before the accident. The fall could have made the damage worse, but it might not have caused the bleeding in the first place.

She leaned over the bed.

"Serena, did you take anything today? Any medication, supplements, or pills?"

Serena’s lashes fluttered.

"No," she murmured. "Just food and water."

The doctor held her gaze for a moment. Serena’s answer was too quick, and her pulse jumped beneath the monitor.

Before the doctor could ask another question, Serena’s eyes slipped shut.

The baby could not be saved. The bleeding continued, and the scans showed serious internal damage. The surgical team rushed Serena into the operating room.

Hours later, she woke in a dim hospital room. The monitor beside her bed gave a steady, quiet beep. Her throat felt raw, and every breath pulled painfully at her abdomen.

Jennifer sat beside the bed with swollen, red eyes. Robert stood near the window, his arms folded tightly across his chest.

Serena swallowed.

"Mom," she whispered. "The baby. Did they save the baby?"

Jennifer looked down at the blanket.

"No, sweetheart."

Serena stared at her.

"The baby is gone," Jennifer continued, her voice breaking. "You lost too much blood. The doctors had to operate to save your life."

"And... what else did they say?"

Jennifer turned away, unable to answer.

Robert’s voice seemed to come from far away. "They said the damage was severe. You may have trouble carrying another pregnancy."

The words struck Serena like a blade.

Her throat closed. She grabbed her mother’s arm.

"What does that mean? What do you mean I might never have children?"

Jennifer pulled her close.

"Easy, baby. You’re still weak. You could start bleeding again."

Then she began to cry.

"Mom, no." Serena’s voice cracked. "That can’t be true. It’s not possible. The doctor must be wrong, right? Tell me this is fake."

Jennifer held her tighter, but she had no answer.

The grief that tore through Serena this time was real. It shook her entire body and left her gasping against her mother’s shoulder.

Alpha Sebastian heard her from the doorway.

His face had gone pale. He knocked once and stepped inside.

Robert moved immediately, blocking the space between Alpha Sebastian and the bed.

"Get out."

"Mr. Winthrop, I..."

"Get out," Robert repeated, his voice harder. "You’ve done enough."

Alpha Sebastian lowered his eyes.

Jennifer followed him into the hallway, her face twisted with fury and grief. She pulled the door shut behind her.

"Why did you push her?" she demanded. "Do you understand what you’ve done? She lost the baby, and now the doctors aren’t sure she’ll ever be able to carry another one."

"It was an accident," Alpha Sebastian said. "I swear. I barely touched her."

"An accident?" Jennifer’s laugh broke with anger. "You never wanted this child. You never talked about marrying her, even after you found out she was pregnant."

Alpha Sebastian lowered his head.

"I’ll make it right."

"With what?" Jennifer snapped. "Get away from my daughter."

Alpha Sebastian turned and walked down the corridor.

His mother’s room was on the same floor, only a short distance away. He had barely taken a few steps when the hallway blurred.

Pain split through his skull. The lights stretched into white streaks. His knees gave out.

"Sebastian!"

Isabella had just stepped out of Margaret’s room. She lunged toward him, but his weight dragged her down with him.

"Someone help!" she screamed. "Nurse! Please!"

Nurses rushed over with a gurney. They checked his pulse and blood pressure before lifting him onto it.

The initial examination found no structural injury. The doctors blamed dehydration, exhaustion, and severe emotional strain. After days of barely sleeping, living on coffee, and refusing to leave the hospital, his body had finally shut down.

Isabella cried harder than anyone.

It felt as if the last support holding the Hale family together had finally collapsed. She was terrified for Alpha Sebastian, but she was also terrified of what would happen next. Lately, when it rains, it pours did not even begin to describe the Hale family’s luck.

That night, Alpha Sebastian developed a high fever.

He tossed beneath the hospital blankets, his skin burning and his breathing uneven. A nurse adjusted his IV and placed a cool cloth over his forehead, but he remained trapped in a restless fever dream.

At first, he called for the baby.

Then he began apologizing.

"I’m sorry..."

Isabella stood beside his bed, wiping tears from her face.

A moment later, Alpha Sebastian whispered another name.

"Eira."

Isabella froze.

His voice was weak, almost broken, but he said it again.

"Eira..."

By the third time, it was the only name left on his lips.

Isabella pressed a hand over her mouth, struggling to hold back another sob. She had no idea how to help her brother, and watching him suffer like this was more than she could bear.

She wiped her face, grabbed her purse, and drove straight to Southridge Estates.

The security gate opened after the guard recognized her car. She barely parked before rushing to Number Nine.

She pounded on the gate.

The estate dog started barking somewhere behind the house.

"Eira!" Isabella shouted. "It’s me! Please, I need to see her!"

A guard approached, keeping a careful distance. "Ms. Hale, Dr. Crawford isn’t here."

"My brother is sick." Her voice cracked. "He has a high fever, and he keeps calling for her. Please, just call her."

The guard exchanged a glance with his partner.

"Where is Alpha Sebastian?"

"Mercy General."

That changed everything. The guard touched his earpiece and stepped aside.

"I’m calling Alpha Killian now."

--

At Number One, Alpha Killian’s phone rang while he and Eira reviewed documents in the study.

He listened without interrupting. His expression grew colder with every word. Then he ended the call.

Eira looked up from the file. "What happened?"

"Isabella is at Number Nine. She wants you to go to the hospital."

Eira’s brows drew together. "Why would she want me? I’m not a doctor."

Alpha Killian made another call. After a short conversation, he set his phone down.

"Yesterday afternoon, Alpha Sebastian pushed Serena on an escalator at Mercy General. He claims it was an accident."

Eira went still.

"Serena lost the baby."

The words hung between them.

Mrs. Jones entered with a tray of coffee. She took one look at their faces and stopped.

"Let me get this straight," she said, setting down the cups. "The mistress loses the baby, the man involved collapses, and now his family wants the ex-wife to come running?"

Eira and Alpha Killian both stared at her.

Mrs. Jones poured the coffee as if she had said nothing unusual.

"Same old rich-family drama, just with better clothes and a hospital bill." She pushed a cup toward Eira. "The only question is whether it was really an accident or whether someone set the whole thing up."

Her words settled over the room.
