Chapter 2270: Chapter 658: One Year Later (35) Attacked? (4)

She lay slumped over the steering wheel, not knowing how many tears she’d shed in silence, not knowing how long her shoulders had been shaking, and in the end, when she’d finally exhausted all her strength, she drove the car into the yard.

She was thinking of what Qin Haiming had written in his diary, that he hoped she could come home for the New Year. Now she had finally come back, but he was already gone.

That explosion blew his body to pieces, and it also blew apart all the emotional savings between them. If he were alive, maybe in a few more years they could have been like an ordinary father and daughter, coming and going in each other’s lives.

After getting home she turned on every light in the house, then sat alone on the sofa, picked up the most recent newspaper on the coffee table, held it quietly in her palms, and began leafing through it intently.

Time slipped by quietly, but her heart gradually calmed down.

Snowflakes were still drifting outside the window, so slow, as if they were reluctant to fall to the ground.

Well, of course—

The ground was so cold and so merciless; once they landed they’d be stepped on and trampled by people or by something else, and on top of that they’d have to risk melting away.

She didn’t know what time it was when she gradually fell asleep, alone.

The house was a bit cold; she’d forgotten to turn on the heater. Near dawn she was woken by the chill, then went back to her bedroom. The next day was still alternately gloomy and lightly snowing, and she didn’t want to wake up.

The younger generation of the Mu Family had several houses to visit and pay New Year calls to, but she didn’t feel she needed to go, so she slept even more soundly.

Except...

A little after eight in the morning, Huanhuan and Chengcheng had already put on the New Year outfits their mom had prepared for them and were lying on their stomachs in the Qin Family’s living room playing with Rubik’s cubes, sighing. There was a trace of sadness in both their eyes.

"Sis, should we go wake Mom up?"

"Give her a big surprise?"

The siblings looked at each other, both wanting to find something to do, but after a few seconds of excitement they both quieted down again and sighed helplessly in unison.

Mu Yichen had just told them not to go upstairs and disturb Qin Mu’s rest.

The brother and sister were still wearing their down jackets. When they first came in they’d felt it was freezing cold. After Mu Yichen turned on the heater, it had only just started to feel a bit warmer.

The smell of food was already wafting out of the kitchen, and both of them were a little hungry, so they curled up on the sofa and focused hard on their Rubik’s cubes to distract themselves.

After eight thirty, the two little ones only charged upstairs when they heard Mu Yichen’s order.

But they didn’t call out to Qin Mu right away. They rushed over and then lay on the edge of the bed to stare at her, snickering softly.

Qin Mu was awakened by the loud bang of the door being opened, and then there was a low giggle—sounded a bit familiar. She slowly opened her eyes and gradually made out the faces of her son and daughter.

"Happy New Year, Mom, red envelopes please!"

The two little ones saw that she was awake and quickly stood straight by her bed, made a congratulatory gesture, then stuck out their hands, asking for red envelopes.

Qin Mu...

She hadn’t prepared any red envelopes at all!

So she sat up lazily, pretending she was still half-asleep. "What are you two talking about so early in the morning? How did you get here?"

"Obviously Dad brought us here!"

Huanhuan put her hands behind her back and spoke with righteous firmness.

Qin Mu raised an eyebrow; she really hadn’t expected Mu Yichen to bring the kids over this early.

She only looked down and realized it was almost nine o’clock. Thinking of what she must look like right now, she immediately got out of bed to wash up, while the two little ones followed behind her, giggling foolishly, as if they were laughing at her.

By breakfast she was already perfectly put together. Luckily, the other day Qin Mingzhu had taken a few extra sets of clothes from the shop that still had their tags on, and today she could just wear one of them.

Although the pink was a bit girlish, on her right now it actually suited the occasion very well.

Mu Yichen couldn’t help sneaking a few extra glances at her. Qin Mu cleared her throat in embarrassment. "Looks childish, doesn’t it? I didn’t bring many clothes. This is Qin Mingzhu’s."

Mu Yichen chuckled softly and didn’t answer. He knew it was Qin Mingzhu’s favorite color, but seeing it on his wife, it actually looked this good.

"Mom looks really pretty in Auntie’s clothes too!"

Huanhuan tilted her head up and told her, clearly in a very good mood.

Qin Mu smiled. "You rarely praise me like this!"

"Hehe!"

Knowing she usually spoke a bit sharply, Huanhuan gave her another sweet grin.

"Mom, you’re beautiful to begin with. That’s why Sis and I are this handsome!"

Chengcheng’s mouth was even sweeter.

"Hmph, hmph!"

Qin Mu couldn’t help but laugh, eyeing her two kids skeptically. How come both their mouths were so sweet today?

...
