High School of Demon Hunting
Chapter 3060 - 73: The Newcomer
Chapter 3060: Chapter 73: The Newcomer
Midnight.
Patrick Black awoke suddenly from his sleep.
He hadn’t had a nightmare, and he hadn’t heard any sounds, but there was a strange summons in his dream that woke him. For a wizard, especially one from an ancient family, being startled awake always required caution. He wiped the cold sweat from his forehead, rolled out of bed, and scanned the room with his eyes.
This was an independent dorm at Alpha Fortress, and besides him, there were no other roommates.
The doors and windows on the independent balcony were tightly closed, and the copper mirror hanging from the ceiling and the curtains on the four-poster bed were silent, with no reaction to external magical intrusion.
On the wall, the portrait frame of the Black family ancestor was empty, evidence that the old fellow had gone off to chat with acquaintances in other frames around the school. This left Patrick slightly disappointed because he had intended to ask the old fellow if he had noticed anything unusual.
Next to the wall was a dressing table.
On it, neatly arranged were the items he’d prepared before going to bed for tomorrow’s use and adornment—from the ivory-handled razor to the Little Dragon skin belt, the Shepherdess’s sachet, his emerald cufflinks, the gold-plated pocket watch, and the law book with a Paris binding—all laid out quietly and orderly.
Patrick frowned, closed his eyes, and concentrated with tranquility, soon once again capturing that faint summons.
He opened his eyes and his gaze fell on the desk in another corner of the room.
Opening the desk drawer, a ruby ring lay on the velvet cloth, faintly glowing.
This was the identity ring of the Seven Sins.
Patrick immediately recognized the ring’s origins—this ring had been given to him by Matthew Karen from the Karen family before graduation. It’s said to have been passed down for hundreds of years in these ancient families with a blood lineage, as the token of a secret student organization. When he first received the ring, Patrick was excited for a while, imagining it to be a legendary wizard organization like the Golden Dawn Society or the Ravens.
For a young wizard from a strict wizard family, with some talent and ambition, joining such a secret society was as alluring as a forbidden romance.
"——Lucifer represents ’pride’, but that doesn’t mean you need to show arrogance. On the contrary, this identity is meant to remind us not to be overly prideful... At First University, weakness and ignorance aren’t barriers to survival, but pride is."
During the handover of the ring, Matthew Karen solemnly advised him:
"——You’re the most talented young wizard I’ve seen in these two classes... In the future, you must observe your juniors just like me, and then pass on this ring. It’s the mission of every ’Lucifer’ of ours... Wizards from our kind of families can’t just focus on learning magical knowledge... Knowledge can never be fully learned, but the opportunity to show one’s value is fleeting and more precious than knowledge..."
These words made Patrick’s eyes sparkle.
He was filled with anticipation for this student secret society called ’Seven Sins’.
But the greater the anticipation, the greater the disappointment.
After attending a few meetings, Patrick finally discovered that this so-called ’ancient’, ’mysterious’, ’rebellious’, ’involved in illegal activities’ student secret society was actually just a teahouse or cafe where a few young people chatted and exchanged information.
No, it was worse.
At least there were people in the cafe, but the meeting room of Seven Sins always had a bunch of cats and dogs and small animals. Because of this, he even had to consume expensive Directional Transformation Potion.
Useless.
This was Patrick’s sole feeling about Seven Sins.
And now, he had to add another evaluation beyond ’useless’.
"——Annoying!"
The young Alpha sighed heavily, weighing the ring that lightly summoned, glancing at the wall clock.
In the early hours, when everyone slept soundly.
Yet he had no choice but to leave his warm bed, head to a dimly lit small meeting room, and listen to other goats, pigs, or foxes jabber away about things of little value.
With a touch of morning grumpiness, Patrick donned the heavy black cloak of Seven Sins, slipped on the long leather gloves and the ruby identity ring, and opened the door, quietly slipping to an unmanned stairway.
Such places were numerous within Alpha Fortress.
White mist rolled up from his feet, quickly engulfing the young wizard.
Only today, something unexpected happened.
When Patrick was about to take the Directional Transformation Potion in front of the Bronze Secret Door, the ghost face on the door suddenly interrupted his action.
"Don’t transform today, just wear the mask." the ghost face said earnestly to the young wizard: "——That’s the suggestion of Lord Kannai."
Lord Kannai...?
Patrick keenly noticed the subtle change in the ghost face’s phrasing.
Before, when it referred to that black cat, it always used impolite terms like ’that guy Kannai’ or ’that rascal’, far less respectful than today.
"You’re referring to that cat..." He noticed the ghost face’s warning gaze, paused, and added in a low voice: "——Does Lord Kannai have any other suggestions?"
The ghost face remained poker-faced, silent, waiting for the young wizard to change clothes.
Moments later.
The bronze small door silently opened.
Hunched over, wearing a bat mask, ’Lucifer’ sluggishly moved into the meeting room. But just crossing the threshold, he couldn’t help but freeze in place.
The dimly lit, somewhat cramped meeting room from memory was nowhere to be seen, replaced by an open and grand hall reminiscent of the First Hall.
Massive pillars surrounded the area, half-hidden in the rolling white mist; ancient and mottled frescoes covered the walls, many of the fierce beasts therein he didn’t even recognize.
Overhead was a dome of intertwining bones.
Underfoot was a carpet as deep as a night sky.
Every step was akin to walking in searing hell or a thorny forest, causing anxiety.
At the center of the hall was still a long conference table, but now it was like a flowing river of lava, emitting an unpleasant sulfurous smell.
Scattered around the table unevenly were seven high-backed chairs of black iron, and one especially heavy and towering obsidian seat at the head of the table.
Undoubtedly, it belonged to the lord Kannai, as mentioned by the ghost face.
When Patrick opened the door and entered, four people were already seated in the meeting room—the Mammon wearing a fox mask, Leviathan with a cat mask, Samael with a wolf head mask, and Kannai seated at the head.
He wore a smooth white mask like an eggshell, with a small septagram branded on the mask’s corner, identical to the mask worn on the forehead by the black cat from Patrick’s memory.
But he definitely was not that cat.
The young wizard from the Black family was utterly convinced of this.
He even suspected, no, was utterly certain that the new Kannai seated at the head now was a Big Wizard. Only a Big Wizard, seated there, would emit such an understated yet majestic presence, or rather, only a Big Wizard could elicit enough respect from the ghost face at the door.
