Chapter 376 - 376: Second Seal
They took him in the yard with the gate still open at his back, which was unkind and safer than a room with panels.
The man was older than the first courier, dust to the seams, a tax bag strapped to his ribs like he expected someone to cut the strap. The seal on the outer leather was Balzac's, the ugly one used for grain tallies and not for family notes.
Rigel held out a hand.
"Bag off the neck or you stay in the arch."
The courier unbuckled it himself, jaw tight.
"If you break the seal before you hear me I will still have done my job, Marquis said the last paper he sent you was ordinary and came back to him as a rumor with flour on it, he is not sending ordinary paper again."
Mesterica stayed on the man's left.
Cynthia came as far as the inner step and no farther, Blade's line of sight kept behind her.
Rigel cracked the seal.
Balzac's hand, heavier than the last letter, no joke about furniture.
The house is shut. Dolly holds the inner floor. The elf women are in one room and they stay in one room. A merchant with a false courtesy tried the side door and left a smear, not a body. No voice that sounds like yours is to be obeyed, I have said this to the staff until they hate me. Do not send another warning on the post road, the first station answered me with a question it should not have known how to ask. If you are still in Blade's ruin, finish what you can break there. If the thing is wearing your work, come home and take the metal off them yourself. I will not put that task on a maid.
Erna had arrived with ice-room cold still on her sleeves and read over his shoulder without asking.
"Your father writes like a man who has stopped hoping you are only being dramatic."
"He writes like a man who has seen a door opened for a mark that was not a mark," Rigel said, and looked at the courier. "Now you talk, not the paper, how you knew to say the house was awake before Calden asked."
The courier rubbed the raw line on his neck where the strap had sat.
"Because the Marquis made me repeat it at the gate, at the first change of horse, and again before I was allowed through this arch, he said if I arrived speaking rooms I had never seen I should be put down as a copy, he said if I arrived angry I might still be his, I am angry, I have not slept, and I would like someone to ask me a question whose answer is not a floor plan."
Cynthia did.
"Name the steward who boards the west-wing accounts."
"Hale, if he has not been replaced this month, he limps on the left and he hates the young master's experiments, that last part is gossip and I will not dress it up as duty."
Mesterica's eyes flicked to Rigel.
That was house knowledge, not castle knowledge.
Not proof enough, but it was not flour.
Rigel folded the letter away.
"You do not sleep in a chamber, you do not walk a servant passage, you sit in the yard office with Calden and you keep that anger where we can see it, if you start smiling I will assume the road taught you on the way in."
The courier almost laughed and did not have the extra breath.
"Yard office is a gift, I will take it."
Calden led him off.
The first courier, still in his chair in the side wing, watched the older man pass and looked briefly, rawly jealous of anyone whose memory still had a first mile in it.
Blade spoke from the step, one cadence, long enough to be a person.
"So your father knows, your house is shut, the post is rotten, and we have a woman in the ice who laughs at turning around, tell me what you intend to break in my ruin that is not already boards and gags, because I will not hold this city on nails alone while you wait for a packet to tick."
Rigel answered him in the yard so the wall would have to listen in public.
"The quarry route is burned, the first post is abandoned as a post and treated as an enemy door, tomorrow we go through the north tower with Erna's marks and we cut anything that has learned to be a passage, tonight nobody follows a courtesy, not even yours if it comes out too clean."
Mesterica folded her arms.
"And Gousel."
"Stays shut, Father is there, Dolly is there, I am not giving the road a second rider to teach, if the stitch still works at that distance then arriving late only lets it wear my face on the threshold."
Erna jerked her chin at the dark above the west wall.
"North tower tomorrow is honest work, tonight that ice-room guest is going to try being useful with her mouth, I want a complaining guard and no priests."
"You get both of the first and none of the second."
They were turning back in when the night watch on the north walk leaned over and called, not smiling, which was why Rigel listened.
"Movement in the old bell frame, not a full ring, like someone testing whether the bronze still answers, and I am not going up alone to ask it the hour."
Cynthia was already moving.
Rigel caught Mesterica's sleeve before she split off the other way.
"Together, we already gave them the post and the cart in different directions, they do not get the tower and the ice in different directions too."
From the ice, muffled against sacking, the quarry woman hummed third bell anyway, as if bronze and a gag were the same instrument, and high above them the cracked royal bell shifted on its yoke, not ringing, only turning, as though it had been asked whether it remembered being worn.
