Chapter 373 - 373: Cool Iron

The packet ticked once more, then went dead in Rigel's coat like a tool that had finished a job.

Erna noticed his face change before he spoke.

"That look means something happened somewhere I cannot brick, does it not, because if it is another hollow I would rather know now than after I have wasted nails on linen shelves."

"It means the copy used the stitch at a distance," Rigel said, and kept walking so the words would not sit in the passage and rot, "not a rider, not a proper letter, a command wearing my cadence in a house that already knows how to stop when I talk."

Cynthia caught that from the junction and came with her father still talking behind her, Blade forcing out a long account of the quarry track because stopping let the lining breathe.

"Then you ride," she said.

"Then I stay, Mesterica is already on the road with the only warning that is actually mine, if I leave now this castle finishes copying the roster and the latch and your father's mouth, and the house at Gousel has Dolly and my father and two adults who have survived worse rooms than a merchant's trick."

Erna snorted, chalk dust on her lip.

"You talk like a man dividing tools, not people, which I suppose is honest of you."

They took the next panel before the argument could grow a second cadence.

False.

Shoulder rub.

Child-height marks were there too, and Rigel only said they boarded that seam from both ends and put a cursing watch on it, nothing else.

Blade's voice rolled down the hall, tired, human for a stretch.

"The merchant's outgoing mark was real at noon and hollow by night, Calden, you will pull every pass written yesterday and you will read them aloud to my daughter, if my own mouth adds a courtesy you will ignore it and keep reading the ink."

Calden did it.

Two passes were ordinary.

The third had a line about airing rooms that Calden swore he had not been asked to write, and he snapped the quill when he saw it, then asked for another, then kept going.

Pell stayed gagged in the side room.

Nobody went in to chat with him.

Cynthia had a man on the door who still swore when he stubbed his boot, which was the test they were using now.

Rigel stopped at the annex long enough to lock a door that did not matter and then gave orders in one run so nobody could pick them apart into questions.

"Erna keeps marking until this floor is ugly with chalk, Cynthia keeps the Count in his own sentences, the courier stays seated and gets hit if he knows my father's study, no one sleeps in a room that was asked about, and if the wall offers hospitality again you do not answer it with a name."

Erna wiped her hands on her trousers.

"I want men who complain, I want hammers, I want the west corridor crew pulled off listening to stone, and I want it on paper that if this house eats another laborer you are the one who pays the family, not the site ledger."

"Write it."

She looked at him as if that answer was suspicious by being clean, then went.

Cynthia lingered.

"You said two adults survived worse, that is the first time tonight you have sounded like you might actually go home, so say whether you are waiting for Mesterica's rider to turn around or waiting for a letter that smells like flour."

Rigel touched the coat over the packet.

"I am waiting to see whether the copy needs me in the room to finish a command, if it does, Gousel holds until I can burn the formula out of the metal, if it does not, riding there is just handing it a second house with my feet."

From the bricked linen seam came a merchant's courtesy, faint, as if speaking through wood were bad manners he was willing to forgive himself.

"You are learning, my lord, slowly, the rooms here are almost aired, the house there has already heard you, and your sister on the post road is carrying paper that will arrive after the useful part is done, which is the trouble with honest letters, they are so much slower than a stitch."

Cynthia put her blade through the board, not to kill a man who was not standing there, to shut the tone off.

The wood split.

No blood.

Only that sweet film-smell and a draft that ran toward the north tower.

Rigel pulled her back before she put her face in the gap.

"That is a mouth, you cannot cut a mouth with a holy sword unless it is stupid enough to grow a neck."

"Then give me a neck."

"Quarry track," he said, already turning, "he stored a cart that was never cloth, if there is a body in this it will be there, if there is only a route we stop feeding it panels and start breaking the hill."

Blade heard that from his chair and answered in one long grind of a sentence, eyes on his daughter, not the dark.

"Take ten men who still complain, take the craftsman if she will go, leave me Cynthia, I would rather be disliked in my own cadence than polite and empty, and if I ask how anyone sleeps you will treat that as the lining and you will not answer me even to be kind."

Erna was already in the yard with a hammer still in her belt, looking at the horses like they were another bad wall.

"If the quarry is another well I am not holding a cover with my hands, I am rolling a stone and leaving, you can bill yourself for the rest."

Rigel swung up.

The packet stayed cool the whole way out the gate, which told him the castle was no longer the place being used, only the place being taught, and the road toward the hills was pale with last light and old cart ruts that split once, the same ugly trick as the footprints, one set dying in scrub and the other climbing toward a cut in the rock where no cousin had ever lived.
