Chapter 417: 417. A Home and an Adventure All at Once

Catherine turned and began the walk back toward their private chambers. Her mind was a whirl of thoughts of the young passion she had witnessed earlier between William and Kaela and of the unspoken future that seemed to be gathering momentum within these walls.

The small, private smile never left her lips.

When she finally reentered their chamber, William was there, standing by the window, his brow furrowed with the kind of restless energy that comes from overthinking. He had clearly been waiting for her.

"What was that about?" William asked immediately, his voice tinged with obvious, lingering curiosity. "You and Selena... you seemed to be having quite the conversation."

Catherine crossed the room, moving with the quiet grace of someone who held all the cards. She didn’t meet his gaze directly, instead focusing on unfastening her cloak.

"Nothing worth worrying about, William."

William crossed his arms, his eyes narrowing. "That’s a very suspicious non-answer."

Catherine turned to him then, her expression serene, her eyes bright with that same unreadable amusement.

"It’s an entirely accurate non-answer," she said, the corner of her mouth twitching upward. "You’ll simply have to trust me on this one."

The chamber they had been assigned for the night was a realm of quiet, overwhelming grandeur, a stark contrast to the utilitarian dormitories of the academy or the modest comforts of Catherine’s house.

Above them, gilded ceilings arched like the ribcage of some ancient, celestial beast, adorned with intricate stone carvings that told the bloody and heroic sagas of the kingdom’s founding.

Through the expansive windows, the royal gardens lay bathed in the pale, ghostly glow of silver moonlight, still fountains like frozen mercury, and manicured hedges casting long, skeletal shadows across the stone paths.

The bed itself was an island of opulence, draped in heavy silks that shimmered like liquid moonlight, promising a luxury that felt almost sinful after weeks of travel and training.

William settled onto the edge of the mattress, the fine silk whispering beneath him. His mind was still racing, replaying the day’s adrenaline, the taste of copper in his mouth, the burn in his lungs, and the raw, terrifying power of the wind magic that had torn through the training grounds.

A moment later, he felt the bed shift as Catherine joined him, her presence a grounding force in the vastness of the room. She curled against his side, her head finding the familiar hollow of his shoulder.

"That was quite a day," she murmured, her voice barely louder than the rustle of the curtains.

"It really was," William agreed, his voice rough with lingering exhaustion. "I still can’t quite believe it."

"The way the air just... obeyed."

"I managed all of that with wind magic in a single afternoon... It felt like I was holding lightning in my hands."

Catherine tilted her head back to look at him, her eyes catching the moonlight.

"I believe it," she said, a small, knowing smile playing on her lips. "Honestly, William, I’ve stopped being surprised by what you manage to accomplish."

"At this point, expecting you to break the rules of reality has simply become... expected."

William let out a huff of amused disbelief. "That’s either the highest compliment you could give me or a deeply concerning statement about how dangerous my life has become."

Catherine laughed, the sound warm and genuine, cutting through the heavy stillness of the moonlit chamber. "Perhaps it’s both."

For a long while, they simply existed in that shared space, letting the conversation drift like smoke. They touched on everything: the unexpected nostalgia of Selena’s return, the terrifying potential of William’s newfound abilities, and the unspoken tensions that seemed to permeate every corner of the palace.

But as the clock ticked toward midnight, the conversation inevitably gravitated toward the one subject neither of them could fully escape.

Kaela.

"She’s happier than I’ve seen her in weeks," Catherine observed suddenly, her tone shifting from playful to perceptive. "Ever since the rain that day, actually."

"There’s a change in her stance, a lightness in how she carries herself. Something has shifted in her soul."

William stared at the moonlight spilling across the floor, his throat tightening.

"I noticed that too," he admitted quietly. "It’s like she’s... breathing again."

’’How do I say it?’ William thought. ’How do I explain that when I look at her, the world stops being about survival and starts being about... something else?’

’Something worth fighting for?’

Catherine turned slightly in his arms, studying his profile with an intensity that made him want to look away. Her expression was tender, laced with a wisdom that transcended her years.

"You care for her, William... Genuinely and even deeply."

"I’ve watched it building not just as a comrade, but as something far more primal, far more vulnerable."

"I’ve watched you watch her."

Silence stretched between them, heavy and charged. William could hear the distant drip of a fountain outside, each drop echoing like a heartbeat.

He took a breath, deciding to strip away the last of his defenses.

"I do," he admitted finally, the words simple but carrying the weight of a vow. "I do care for her..."

"More than I knew how to handle."

"I just... I wasn’t sure how to bring it up properly."

"How to say it without making everything complicated."

Catherine reached up, her fingers brushing against his jawline. "You don’t need to be careful about bringing it up with me, William."

"You never have to wear your armor when it’s just us." Her gaze softened further. "I meant what I said back at the academy."

"My deepest wish for you isn’t power or position."

"I want you happy, William. Genuinely, terrifyingly happy."

"And I’ve watched enough now to know that your happiness includes her."

Something in Catherine’s expression shifted, a subtle transformation that William tracked with keen attention. The tenderness in her eyes didn’t vanish, but it was suddenly layered with something sharper, something playful and dangerous.

He watched as she leaned in closer, the moonlight catching the curve of her lips as a familiar, teasing smile spread slowly across her face. It was a look that struck him as oddly, distinctly reminiscent of someone else entirely.

"You’re doing the Selena thing," William said, a startled laugh breaking through his earlier vulnerability.

"Am I?" Catherine asked.

She pulled back just an inch, tilting her head with an expression of perfect, feigned innocence, though her eyes sparkled with obvious, deliberate mischief.

"You absolutely are."

"That exact grin, that predatory little smirk... I watched her use it on me not six hours ago when she was trying to corner me about the academy."

"I suppose I’ve been taking notes," Catherine admitted, breaking her facade with a soft laugh, entirely unbothered by being caught. "Selena has a certain... lethal confidence to her teasing that I’ve always rather admired."

"I thought I might borrow a little of it... See if it works on you."

"It’s working," William said, his voice dropping an octave.

The playfulness remained, but it was now undercut by something far more potent. A warm, charged tension steadily built in the quiet space between them, thick enough to taste.

Catherine leaned closer still, the distance between them dissolving until he could feel the heat radiating from her skin. The silver moonlight caught the pale strands of her hair, creating a halo that made her seem almost ethereal, yet her gaze was grounded, intense, and undeniably human.

The teasing was gone, replaced by something far more intimate and demanding.

"Wanna do it tonight?" she asked.

Her voice was low, a velvet murmur that vibrated against his chest. It was a genuine, open invitation, wrapped in that same easy humor that made her feel like his home and his adventure all at once.

William laughed softly, a sound of pure, unguarded affection. He reached for her, his fingers finding the small of her back, pulling her flush against him.

"Since you’re asking so charmingly, I suppose I have no choice but to comply."

The moonlight spilled gently through the tall windows, silver and soft across the fine silk sheets as the room fell into a different kind of silence, one that wasn’t empty but full. Catherine’s laughter faded into something quieter, warmer, and more breathy as her hand found William’s in the comfortable dark.

Their earlier conversation about duty, war, and Kaela dissolved gradually into unhurried closeness. The weight of the day’s remarkable events—the magic, the politics, the looming threats—settled into something considerably simpler and more tender.

The quiet luxury of the grand chamber wrapped around them like a cocoon, a temporary shelter from the storms that inevitably waited beyond its gilded walls.

’Just for tonight... let the world burn outside. ’William thought. ’Let the kings argue and the enemies plot.’

’Here, there’s only this. Only her...’

Somewhere beyond the tall windows, the palace gardens rested peacefully beneath the gentle wash of moonlight, the fountains whispering secrets to the still air. Within the sanctum of their room, William and Catherine found their own peaceful stillness.

The genuine, deepening love between them continued to grow, forging a bond that felt stronger than any spell or blade. They were two souls building something lasting in the middle of chaos, finding strength in each other’s arms before the dawn demanded they become warriors once again.
