Chapter 1047 – Never Sign a Contract From Greed Without Reading it Fully
Adrian’s eyes moved lower, but his attention kept breaking.
Because Lux kept working.
Panels shifted.
Lux murmured to himself under his breath. "No... this clause should have expired. Why was it renewed through a third-party trustee? Hm. Cute. Amateur, but cute."
Another panel.
"Cost inflation through procurement. Three layers. Someone likes clean hands."
Another.
"Permit delay not government-based. Manufactured objection chain. Same consultant group behind two reports. That is lazy."
Another.
"Investor fatigue caused intentionally. They killed confidence, then offered rescue terms. Classic."
Adrian’s fingers tightened on the contract.
That last one struck.
Offered rescue terms.
He remembered those.
The "helpful" proposals. The "strategic restructuring" offers. The cousin who insisted bringing in outside management was the only way to save face. The legal advisor who warned against rushing. The investor who suggested selling more control before costs rose again.
His stomach sank.
Celeste saw his face. She knew he was remembering. She was remembering too.
Lux flicked another interface away.
A red cluster remained in the air. "There."
Naomi looked at it.
Adrian and Celeste lifted their eyes despite themselves.
Lux pointed at the cluster. "This is your sabotage spine."
Adrian stared.
The cluster showed six entities connected by hidden agreements. Two contractors. One legal office. One advisory group. One offshore holding company. One family-linked trust.
Adrian’s face went pale at the last one.
Celeste whispered, "No."
Lux glanced at her. "You recognize it."
Celeste’s lips pressed together.
Adrian’s expression became rigid again, but this time it was not aimed at Lux.
It was aimed inward. At the dawning realization that his project had been bleeding from inside the family.
Lux looked back at the panels. "Someone does not want only the project. They want Delacour weakened enough to accept rescue under their terms. Eventually, your family keeps the name but loses actual control."
He paused.
Then added, almost lazily, "Very mortal. Very boring. Still effective."
Adrian stared at him. "Can you stop it?"
Lux did not answer immediately.
He enlarged the red cluster, then split it into three.
"Stop? Yes."
Adrian’s hope rose before he could stop it.
Lux continued, "But stopping is not enough."
Celeste’s eyes sharpened. "Meaning?"
"If you only stop them, they retreat and try again elsewhere. If you expose them, the family fractures publicly. If you buy them out, you reward the attack. If you counter-sabotage, you risk legal blowback unless done cleanly."
Adrian swallowed. "What would you do?"
Lux smiled faintly.
"I would let them think they are winning for another week."
Adrian stared. "What?"
Lux’s hands moved again.
A new projection appeared.
"Then I would feed them a false restructuring route. Make them reveal their controlling hand. Pull their emergency capital source into visibility. Freeze the procurement fraud through an audit trigger. Shift the most valuable project rights into a new vehicle before they realize the door moved."
Celeste’s lips parted.
Lux continued, faster now.
"Then I would offer them a choice. Buy out at a humiliating discount under confidentiality, or go public and lose reputation, access, licenses, and their future ability to sit at the same tables they currently poison."
Adrian could barely follow the speed of the words.
But he understood the tone.
This was not theory.
Lux had done this before.
Maybe hundreds of times.
Maybe in Hell, where stakes were worse than money.
Naomi looked at her parents.
Her father was stunned.
Her mother was afraid, yes, but there was something else now. A realization that Lux was not a man they could simply evaluate.
Adrian looked down at the contract again.
His mind should have focused on the clauses, but it couldn’t. Not fully.
The holograms kept moving.
Lux kept working.
How many documents had Adrian’s consultants needed months to process?
How many meetings had they held just to understand one ownership branch?
And this demon was doing it while standing.
That detail felt absurdly offensive.
Celeste thought the same, in a different way.
This is how Hell’s CFO works?
The question formed in her mind without permission.
She glanced at Naomi.
Her daughter stood beside him, not as a possession but as the one person in the room Lux kept quietly protecting even while dismantling a sabotage network.
Celeste’s chest ached.
She had thought Naomi was being naïve.
Perhaps she still was, in some ways.
But perhaps the Delacours had mistaken hardness for wisdom for too long.
Adrian finally forced his attention to the contract.
He read another clause.
"Any business agreement between Lux Vaelthorn and Delacour Estate shall exist independently from Naomi Delacour’s personal relationship with Lux Vaelthorn. No implied parental approval, romantic exchange, social permission, or familial control shall be attached to the investment."
He hated that clause.
Because it named him.
He looked at Lux.
Lux was not trying to impress him anymore.
Maybe he never had been. He was solving the problem because that was the agreement.
Because Greed respected properly defined terms.
Adrian lowered his gaze.
The pen waited on the table.
He reached for it, then stopped.
Celeste touched his wrist.
He looked at her.
Her expression was quiet.
"Read it fully," she said.
Adrian nodded slowly.
Naomi watched them.
Lux spoke without turning. "You should."
All three looked at him. His hands did not stop moving.
"Never sign a contract from Greed without reading it fully." Then his smile appeared, small and sharp, reflected in the hologram light. "Even when Greed is being generous."
Naomi smiled.
Because that was Lux. Honest in the strangest places.
Adrian looked down again and forced himself to read.
Line by line.
Adrian hated how fair it was.
If the contract had been predatory, he could reject it proudly. If it had contained some monstrous demonic clause demanding blood, soul, inheritance, or worship, he could point at it and say, See? This is what he is.
But no.
Lux Vaelthorn had placed a wall between business and Naomi so cleanly that Adrian had no respectable argument left.
Celeste read beside him in silence.
Her face was calm, but her hand had tightened around the edge of the table.
She understood too.
This contract did not only protect Naomi from Lux. It protected Naomi from them.
Adrian reached the final line.
