Chapter 1043 – Competence

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

Celeste looked at Lux with new focus.

Lux saw it. She had heard those recommendations before.

That meant the old path had failed.

"What would you suggest differently?" Adrian asked.

Lux tapped one finger against the armrest. "Depends."

"On?"

"Whether you want to finish the project, save face, maximize profit, preserve control, or use it as a family legacy piece."

Adrian said nothing.

Lux smiled. "Those are not the same goal."

Naomi looked at her father.

For the first time, Adrian seemed less certain.

He had expected Lux to bluff wealth. Maybe offer money. Maybe boast. Maybe say he could fund it easily and therefore prove his value.

Instead Lux had taken the project apart without touching a document.

Celeste folded her hands. "If the goal is preserving control?"

"Then you need layered membership, not full public luxury sales. Keep the core assets under Delacour ownership. Sell long-term usage rights and limited villa ownership around the perimeter. Maintain operational control through a management company. Bring in one prestige partner for credibility, not ten investors who all want board seats."

Adrian’s expression shifted.

Lux continued, "If the goal is profit, then sell the dream aggressively. Pre-sell villas to international buyers. Create artificial scarcity. Founder memberships. Private auction access. High entrance fees. Build in phases. Let the first phase fund perception, the perception fund demand, and demand fund the rest."

Celeste’s approval grew visibly now, though she tried to hide it.

[Celeste Delacour]

[Interest: 76%]

[Approval: 44%]

[Commentary: She enjoys competence. Congratulations on basic restraint.]

Adrian asked, "And if the goal is legacy?"

Lux’s smile faded slightly. "Then stop treating everything as business."

Silence.

Naomi looked at him.

Adrian’s face hardened. "Meaning?"

"Meaning legacy projects are not always optimized for profit. Sometimes they are designed to say ’our family built something that will outlive us’."

Lux’s gaze moved briefly to Naomi, then back. "But if every relationship, every daughter, every building, every alliance must immediately prove benefit, you will not build legacy. You will build a balance sheet with expensive landscaping."

Celeste’s expression shifted.

Naomi’s chest tightened.

Adrian’s eyes flashed. "Careful."

Lux smiled faintly. "I am being careful."

"No. You are being insulting." Adrian leaned forward. "You speak as if you are above business."

Lux’s laugh was quiet. "I am business. But I know its limits."

Adrian said nothing.

Lux’s gaze did not move. "That is the difference between Greed and desperation."

The room went silent.

Naomi’s throat tightened. Because she heard the second meaning.

Lux leaned back again, the gold dimming. "If you want compensation for Naomi, you get nothing."

Adrian’s jaw clenched.

"If you want a business partner for your stalled project, then we can discuss terms."

Adrian’s eyes narrowed. "What terms?"

Lux smiled. "Now we are having a proper conversation."

Adrian looked irritated by how much he had walked into that.

Lux continued, "First, I do not invest to prove romantic worth. I invest if the project has value."

Naomi almost laughed despite the tightness in her chest.

Lux went on, "Second, Naomi is excluded from the agreement. Her name does not appear as collateral, condition, guarantee, symbolic blessing, family transfer, emotional clause, or any other charming mortal nonsense."

Adrian’s mouth tightened.

"Third," Lux said, "if I become involved, I receive full document access and decision rights proportional to capital and expertise. I do not pour money into a grave because pride refuses surgery."

Celeste looked at Adrian. That one was for him.

Adrian’s fingers tapped once against the chair. "What do you get?"

Lux smiled. "Potentially? Ownership stake. Management fees. Long-term profit. Network access. A clean mortal-side luxury asset. Influence among people who think they are untouchable because they have private wine cellars and yacht problems."

Celeste’s brow lifted slightly. "And if the project is not viable?"

Lux’s answer came without hesitation. "I tell you to kill it."

Adrian went still.

Lux’s voice remained calm. "No more emotional funding. No more sunk-cost worship. No more preserving a corpse because it has the family name attached."

Naomi watched her father’s face.

The project was not only business.

She knew that now.

Maybe she had known before and refused to name it.

Adrian’s pride was tied to it. Perhaps Delacour’s image too. Maybe years of failed effort had turned it into a monument to stubbornness.

Adrian said quietly, "You speak very easily of killing another family’s project."

Lux’s gaze hardened. "I have killed my own." His voice lowered. "Many times."

Naomi looked at him.

Lux did not elaborate.

But she could imagine it.

Nexus Prime.

Sleepless nights.

Projects with hundreds depending on him.

Decisions where saving one thing meant cutting another.

Greed was not only hoarding.

Sometimes Greed survived by knowing what to stop feeding.

Lux smiled again, thinner now. "So yes, Mr. Delacour. I can evaluate your billionaire relaxation kingdom."

Adrian stared at him. "Do not call it that."

"I will call it worse if the margins are bad."

Celeste’s lips finally curved.

Adrian did not smile. But his anger had shifted. But now tangled with reluctant recognition.

He had tried to assign value to Lux.

Instead, Lux had started assigning value to him.

Adrian knew it.

Lux knew he knew. That was why Lux’s smile remained pleasant.

Adrian leaned back slowly. "If I give you access to the project documents, what happens next?"

Lux said, "I review them."

"How long?"

"Depends on how messy they are."

"They are very messy."

"Then I’ll need an hour and coffee."

Naomi muttered, "No."

Lux glanced at her. "This is business."

"You had enough coffee."

"I am negotiating with your father."

"That is not a medical exception."

Celeste looked between them.

For the first time, amusement warmed her eyes without the help of any incubus leakage.

Adrian looked deeply displeased that his daughter could scold a demon prince in front of him and survive.

Lux sighed. "Fine. Tea."

Naomi smiled faintly.

The tiny exchange softened the room more than any formal declaration could have. Because whatever Adrian believed about value, compensation, and business, he could see this much.

Naomi was not enchanted.

She was not afraid. She was herself beside Lux. Maybe more herself than she had been in this house for a long time.
