Chapter 1040 – Value [Part 2]

The command hit the room like a contract sealed in blood.

Adrian’s body moved before pride could stop it.

He sat.

His face went pale.

His eyes were wide now, fixed on Lux with the dawning horror of a rational mortal watching reality tear off its mask and reveal teeth beneath manners.

Lux remained seated across from him, demonic wings framing his body, expression calm, suit still immaculate, smile gone.

"There," Lux said softly. "Now we can continue like civilized people."

Adrian swallowed. His voice came rough. "What... are you?"

Lux’s gaze did not waver. "I told you."

Silence.

The words had been ridiculous before.

Now they sat in the room with wings and horns and pressure strong enough to make old wards hum in fear.

Lux leaned forward slightly. "I am not a con artist." The gold aura tightened. "I am not climbing your social ladder." His eyes flicked briefly to Naomi, then back to Adrian. "And I did not come into Naomi’s life because I needed her status."

Adrian said nothing.

Could say nothing.

Lux’s voice softened by one degree.

"I have more money than your investigators can imagine. More enemies than they can survive knowing. More titles than would fit comfortably into this conversation." His mouth curved faintly. "But none of that is why I am here."

Celeste found her voice first.

"Then why are you?"

Lux looked at her. The aura did not touch her harshly. It bent around Naomi too, careful and controlled. "I am here because Naomi asked me to come."

Naomi’s throat tightened.

Lux continued, "And because something connected to your estate is cursed. I can help. Or at least I can determine whether help is possible."

Adrian’s hand gripped the chair arm so hard his knuckles whitened. "You expect me to accept... this?"

"No," Lux said.

Adrian stared.

Lux leaned back again. "I expect you to react badly. You are doing well, all things considered."

His system flickered.

[Adrian Delacour]

[Fear: 72%]

[Disapproval: Temporarily suppressed by survival instinct]

[Trust: Error recalculating]

[Commentary: Reality adjustment in progress.]

Lux ignored it.

Naomi finally stepped forward. "Dad."

Adrian looked at her.

The fear in his face hurt her, but she held herself steady.

"I knew," she said.

His face twisted. "You knew? And you stayed with him?"

"Yes."

"Naomi—"

"I chose it."

Her voice trembled, but only slightly.

Lux’s wings twitched.

He wanted to step in.

He did not.

This was her claim to make.

Naomi’s eyes shone, not with tears, but with something firmer. "I chose him."

Adrian looked like the sentence struck him harder than Lux’s transformation.

Celeste remained quiet, but her gaze moved between Naomi and Lux, expression unreadable.

Lux watched her carefully.

Mrs. Delacour was frightened.

Not only frightened.

Her eyes held calculation.

Adrian turned back to Lux, voice low. "Did you enchant her?"

The room chilled.

Naomi’s face hardened. "Dad."

Lux’s eyes narrowed.

The Greed aura receded slightly, replaced by something warmer beneath it. "No."

Adrian’s breathing remained uneven.

Lux held his gaze. "I am an incubus. I could influence desire if I chose to abuse that power."

Naomi’s fingers tightened.

Lux continued, voice colder now, "I did not."

Adrian stared.

Lux lifted one hand. "If you want proof, bring any ward, priest, occultist, doctor, bloodline reader, or truth relic you trust. Examine her. Examine me. Examine the space between us." His eyes glowed. "You will find no compulsion."

Celeste’s lips parted slightly.

Adrian looked shaken.

Lux’s voice became softer. "But you will find choice."

Naomi looked at him.

Lux turned back to Adrian.

"You accused me of being dangerous to your daughter. You are not entirely wrong."

Adrian’s eyes sharpened despite fear.

Lux said, "My life is complicated. My enemies are real. My world is worse than yours in most ways. I will not pretend otherwise." He paused. "But do not insult Naomi by calling her fooled simply because her choice frightens you."

Adrian looked at Naomi.

Celeste walked to his side and placed a hand lightly on his shoulder.

Then she looked at Lux.

Her face was still pale.

But her voice was steady.

"If what you say is true, Mr. Vaelthorn..."

Lux folded his wings halfway, lowering the pressure in the room.

"It is."

"Then what do you want from our family?"

Lux smiled faintly.

Finally.

A question he liked.

Clean. Direct. Transactional.

"Access to the cursed site. Permission to inspect it. Full disclosure of relevant family contracts connected to it. No hidden documents. No protective lies.

Celeste’s eyes narrowed. "And in return?"

"I attempt to identify the curse and offer a solution if one exists."

Adrian’s voice was hoarse. "And Naomi?"

Lux looked at him. Then answered carefully. "Naomi is not part of the payment."

The room went still.

Lux’s voice sharpened. "She is not collateral. Not bargaining weight. Not a condition."

Naomi’s eyes softened.

Lux leaned forward again, demonic eyes fixed on Adrian. "You may dislike me. You may question me. You may decide I am the worst possible man to stand beside your daughter."

His smile returned.

Cold at the edge.

"But you will not negotiate her as if she is an estate asset."

For a second, no one spoke.

Naomi’s fingers tightened around his hand.

Adrian looked at him with a strange expression.

Not offended. Not even surprised.

That made Lux pause.

Only slightly.

But Naomi felt it through his hand.

Adrian leaned back in his chair, breathing still not fully steady after the demonic reveal, but his eyes had regained some of their old sharpness.

"Mr. Vaelthorn," Adrian said slowly, "you are a businessman, are you not?"

Lux’s expression did not move. "I am."

"Then you should understand this better than anyone." Adrian’s voice was quiet, controlled. "Relationships between families are not built only on feelings."

Naomi went still.

Lux felt it.

Not a flinch this time.

A freezing.

Adrian continued, "Naomi is my daughter. I love her. But she is also Delacour."

The room cooled.

Lux’s system did not appear, but he did not need it.

He could hear the shape of the sentence before it arrived.

"She carries our name," Adrian said. "Our reputation. Our social connection. Our influence. Her marriage, her public partner, her future household... those things affect us."
