Chapter 350: The Courier Who Saw Nothing

The contract enforcers advanced without raising their voices. Two carried hooked shields. Two held narrow spears designed for the storage gallery’s tight lanes. The final pair remained behind the leader with black seals already glowing between their hands. Martin stepped in front of the wounded courier and summoned Breakwater Aegis.

"The seal is disputed," Katherine said from the floor. One hand remained above the courier’s chest while Kinnami held the golden barrier beneath the fused metal. "Removing it will kill him."

The masked leader did not slow. "His survival is not part of our contract."

"It is part of ours," Martin replied.

The first spear struck. Breakwater Aegis caught the point near its center. Martin turned it toward the nearest storage rack instead of letting the shaft slide past him toward Katherine. The hooked shield behind it snapped around the Aegis’s edge and pulled. Unyielding Grip locked through his forearms.

The enemy failed to tear the shield away, but the force still dragged Martin half a step forward. A second spear entered the opening at his side. Rias appeared beneath it.

Gloamneedle cut the leather loop joining the wielder’s wrist to the weapon. She struck the spearhead with her forearm and sent it skidding under a crate rather than wasting time attacking the man’s armor.

Alexandra took the left lane alone. She caught one enforcer’s shield hook between her crossed swords, twisted it away from Martin, and cut the buckle holding the man’s breastplate together. His armor opened. She drove both sword pommels into his chest and knocked him backward without waiting to admire the result. The rear seals flashed.

Black threads shot across the gallery and attached to the courier’s fused plate. Elisebeth had Silent Stage ready. She folded the spell around the threads, captured the vibration traveling through them, and turned the field toward an empty crate. The crate exploded.

The courier arched against the wall anyway. Heat spread beneath his armor in a red line.

"There is a physical connection too," Katherine said. "I can slow it, not stop it."

Cassandra watched the red line beneath the courier’s armor instead of the threads everyone could see. The visible cords jerked at different times, but the burning line beneath his breastplate pulsed in perfect rhythm with the seal held by the rear-right enforcer.

"Rias, rear right. Under the hand seal. The others are decoys."

Rias vanished from Martin’s side. The leader anticipated Shadow Step. His narrow sword cut across the place where she should have appeared, but Rias ended the movement short and came out beside the storage rack instead. She kicked the lower shelf into his path, forcing him to turn his blade against falling evidence crates. Gloamneedle flashed beneath his guard and severed the contract cord tied around the rear enforcer’s wrist.

Cassandra had already reached full draw on the stationary seal. Patient Draw sharpened until the cord went slack. Her arrow pierced the glowing seal. The red line beneath the courier’s armor vanished.

Katherine drew in one controlled breath and pushed Kinnami’s barrier deeper between metal and skin. "Now I can separate it. I need time."

Martin changed his stance. "You have it."

The enforcers stopped trying to break through him directly. The two remaining seals spread across the floor and formed black doorways beside the party. One opened behind Elisebeth. The other formed above Katherine and the courier. Spears came through both.

Elisebeth spun Silent Stage around herself. The first spear crossed the weakened physical barrier, but the contract signal riding it remained trapped outside. She caught the shaft against her staff and ducked as Rias cut through the bracer on the wrist following it. Kinnami’s barrier caught the second spear above Katherine’s head and shoved its point sideways into the stone.

Martin drove Breakwater Aegis into the floor seal anchoring the upper doorway. The portal folded out of alignment and threw the half-emerged enforcer back into the gallery.

Alexandra looked at Kinnami, then at the enforcers regrouping around them. "So much for subtle."

Kumoe appeared from her personal subspace in a burst of pale light. The curious head immediately seized the fallen man’s shield hook, the right caught the chain around his elbow, and the sleepy middle woke just enough to send restoration through the bruising along Alexandra’s forearms. The leader reached Martin.

His narrow sword did not challenge the shield. It struck the straps attaching Martin’s coat and armor, searching for equipment records to sever the same way the Seal-Eaters had.

Martin switched to Rainwarden Sword and met the blade outside the Aegis’s edge. Measured Answer accelerated his return cut, but the leader withdrew before the strike reached his mask. He was experienced enough not to stand inside Martin’s counter. Instead, he drove one heel into a broken vial. Live-bond blood splashed across the floor.

Every remaining Seal-Eater core hidden among the destroyed bodies reacted. Dark jaws reformed beneath the party.

Cassandra saw the Hungerlines converge on the courier and Kumoe. "The blood is directing their Dark Force hunger toward living bonds."

Martin planted the shield between the courier and the nearest reforming monster. Alexandra pulled Kumoe away from a second while Katherine kept working on the fused plate.

"Encore, floor!" Martin called.

Elisebeth expanded Silent Stage into a shallow dome over the spilled blood. She threaded Fire Shield through its lower edge, heating only the trapped residue without letting flame spread to the evidence crates or the courier. The blood burned black. The Seal-Eaters lost their direction before their bodies fully formed.

Cassandra shot one exposed core. Rias cut another. Martin crushed the third beneath Breakwater Aegis. The leader used the distraction to retreat toward the stairs. Alexandra started after him.

"Let him go," Rias said. "The courier first."

Alexandra stopped with both swords raised. Anger tightened her shoulders, but she returned to the formation instead of chasing an enemy into an unknown route.

The remaining enforcers followed their leader. One dragged an injured companion. Another abandoned the man Alexandra had stripped of his seal belt without a backward glance. The masked leader paused at the foot of the stairs.

"The patron will remember this crew."

Then the market door closed behind him. Katherine freed the courier seal seconds later.

Kinnami’s barrier held the burning threads away from the man’s chest while Rias cut them one by one. The final strand pulsed beneath the breastplate when Katherine shifted the barrier, revealing its position. Martin held the armor open, Rias severed the strand, and Alexandra pulled the seal free with both hands. The courier screamed once before the black threads went dead.

Golden restoration spread over the damage. His breathing remained shallow, but it became steady.

They moved him into the reception hall after securing every recoverable crate. Kumoe guarded the stairs while Rias questioned the captured enforcer. The man refused to speak and triggered a market clause that erased his temporary identity before he disappeared through a black door. The courier was more cooperative once Katherine told him he would live.

"I never saw the buyer," he said. "I never saw the patron. Nobody does."

Rias opened a protected testimony record. "Tell us the route."

"A patron files a request. A broker hides the patron. A steward prepares the materials. A courier gets one destination. Another courier gets the next. The seal knows more than the person carrying it."

"Who funded the Beastslayer shipment?" Cassandra asked.

"The file showed classifications. No name."

He closed his eyes and recited them from memory.

[Dispossessed Patron.]

[Lineage Verified.]

[Beast Grievance Registered.]

Rias recorded every word. "Did you hear anything connected to those terms?"

"Once. Two people argued behind a screen. One said, ’We trusted them with our roads, our borders, and our children. They left us with ashes.’ I couldn’t see either of them. I don’t know who they meant."

"Then it stays testimony," Rias said. "Not proof of identity, house, or ownership."

The courier nodded weakly. They returned the recovered seal through the lodge’s market route, but refused to surrender the injured man until a neutral healer accepted responsibility for him. The contract broker disliked the additional condition. The market honored it anyway.

[Trial Recovery Contract completed.]

[Courier seal returned unopened.]

[Additional recovery recorded: Living courier.]

[Restricted Guest Access granted.]

[Private Auction Invitation available.]

Only after the notices closed did Cassandra’s hands begin to shake. She stood beside the wall, staring at blood that was no longer there. During the fight, she had identified targets, corrected assumptions, and fired without hesitation. Now her fingers would not close properly around the Nightglass Longbow.

Martin approached but stopped before touching her. "Cass?"

She looked at him. "Stay beside me."

He stepped close and put one arm around her. Cassandra leaned into his chest with a small, uneven breath. Katherine joined them without speaking, her hand settling against Cassandra’s back. Alexandra hesitated, then pressed against Cassandra’s other side.

Cassandra made no attempt to arrange the moment or apologize for needing it. She simply stayed between them until the trembling passed. Across the room, Elisebeth opened the door, took in the four of them pressed together, and stopped.

"Rias says you have five minutes before she begins the evidence review," she said.

Then she closed the door again.
