Chapter 42 – Hot Spring Bath

  • Next Chapter

Shin's cheeks burned a deep crimson after that gentle kiss and Lireina's heartfelt confession. His heart pounded so loudly that it drowned out the rustling wind sweeping across the mountaintop. As he gazed into Lireina's sparkling emerald eyes, which shimmered beneath the golden glow of the setting sun, he struggled to believe that this was real. The woman he had admired for so long was looking at him with warmth and affection that could never be mistaken for anything else.

"Lena..." Shin whispered, his voice trembling with disbelief. "A-Are you sure?"

"Of course." Lireina nodded without hesitation. A gentle smile blossomed across her face, brighter than the evening sky painted in shades of orange and crimson. It was the most beautiful smile Shin had ever seen, filled with sincerity and quiet happiness that made his chest tighten.

Unable to hold back the overwhelming joy surging through him, Shin wrapped his arms tightly around her. He buried his face against her shoulder as laughter and relief escaped him all at once. "Thank you, Lena! I love you!"

Lireina's cheeks flushed a delicate pink as she returned the embrace, gently rubbing his back with comforting strokes. The warmth of his body against hers made her heartbeat quicken, yet she felt completely at peace.

"I love you even more, Shin."

They remained in each other's arms for what felt like an eternity, neither wanting to be the first to let go. The cool mountain breeze drifted around them, carrying the refreshing scent of pine trees, damp earth, and wildflowers blooming among the rocks. Birds sang softly in the distance while leaves rustled overhead, as if nature itself was quietly celebrating their newfound love. Eventually, they loosened their embrace, their fingers naturally finding each other once more.

"Let's walk while we talk," Lireina said, intertwining her fingers with his. "If we keep going, we should reach a good camping spot before it gets too dark."

"Sure." Shin smiled, still unable to stop grinning.

As they resumed their hike, Lireina's pointed elf ears twitched beneath the breeze. Strands of her golden hair clung lightly to her neck from the day's climb, carrying the faint scent of fresh grass mixed with perspiration. She brushed a lock of hair away and quietly sighed. The front of her blouse felt warm and slightly damp after the emotional confession and the long trek up the mountain. Looking down for a brief moment, she softly mumbled to herself, "I really need a bath."

Neither of them spoke for the rest of the journey. Their silence was not uncomfortable, but rather a quiet acknowledgment of the life-changing moment they had just shared. Shin was still trying to convince himself that this was not a dream. For years, he had admired Lireina from afar, believing someone as kind, beautiful, and accomplished as her could never return his feelings. Every time he glanced at their intertwined hands, another wave of happiness washed over him.

Lireina, on the other hand, was experiencing emotions she had never known before. Love was completely unfamiliar territory. She had fought monsters, completed dangerous missions, and faced countless hardships, yet none of those experiences had prepared her for the nervous excitement fluttering inside her chest. She wanted to say something meaningful, but every sentence she imagined made her cheeks grow warmer, so she simply squeezed Shin's hand a little tighter whenever their eyes met.

In the end, words were unnecessary. Their footsteps echoed softly along the winding trail while the evening breeze cooled their skin. The golden sunlight slowly faded into shades of purple and deep blue as stars gradually appeared overhead. The gentle warmth of each other's hands, the occasional shy glance, and the peaceful silence between them conveyed everything they wished to say. Sometimes, companionship needed no conversation at all.

Night had fully settled over the mountain by the time they discovered a natural hot spring nestled beside a wide stretch of flat ground. Steam drifted lazily into the cool night air, glowing faintly beneath the silver moonlight. The rhythmic bubbling of the mineral water blended with the distant chirping of crickets, creating a calm and inviting atmosphere. Nearby, tall trees swayed gently while the earthy scent of moss and damp stone filled the air.

Shin and Lireina lowered their backpacks onto the soft grass with relieved sighs. As soon as she released his hand, Lireina's eyes sparkled with childlike excitement. She hurried toward the steaming pool, clasping her hands together as she admired the familiar spring.

"Wow! It's still here!" she exclaimed happily. "The hot spring is just as beautiful as I remember!"

"Y-Yeah..." Shin replied with a small smile.

Watching her excitement, Shin could not help but chuckle to himself. The way she had immediately let go of his hand to admire the hot spring made a playful thought cross his mind. She might actually love hot springs even more than me. The thought was so ridiculous that he silently laughed at himself, knowing full well how unfair that comparison was.

Lireina began preparing for her bath, first removing her travel cape before setting it neatly on a nearby rock. She slipped off her thigh-high boots with a relieved sigh, flexing her tired feet after the long hike. As she reached for her skirt, her sensitive elf ears suddenly twitched. She instinctively sensed Shin's lingering gaze behind her.

Her cheeks instantly turned bright red.

"Hey! Don't look!" she protested, pouting as she quickly covered herself.

"Ah!" Shin replied in a panic. Embarrassed, he immediately turned around until his back faced the spring. To keep himself occupied, he busied himself unpacking their tent, fumbling with the poles far more clumsily than usual while pretending to concentrate entirely on setting up camp.

Once she had finished undressing in private, Lireina slowly stepped into the steaming hot spring. The warm water embraced her body from her feet upward, sending soothing waves of heat through her tired muscles. She let out a long, contented sigh as the pleasant warmth melted away the fatigue from the day's hike. The gentle scent of minerals rose with the drifting steam, while the cool night breeze brushed against her damp hair and flushed cheeks. Closing her eyes, she leaned back against a smooth rock, allowing the tranquil sounds of bubbling water and whispering leaves to wash over her. Little by little, the lingering nervousness from confessing her feelings faded away, replaced by a quiet sense of comfort and happiness. For the first time that day, she could simply relax, knowing that the person she loved was waiting just beyond the veil of steam.

As soon as the warm water rose high enough to cover her chest, Lireina relaxed against the smooth edge of the hot spring and waved cheerfully through the drifting steam.

"Shin! It's okay now," she called, her bright voice echoing gently across the quiet campsite.

"Alright," Shin replied as he turned around.

A faint blush lingered on his face as he approached. Although the thick steam and the water concealed most of Lireina's body, he deliberately kept his eyes on her face. He was certainly a healthy young man with his share of romantic fantasies, but his feelings for Lireina were built on admiration and respect before anything else. The last thing he wanted was to make her uncomfortable.

Before joining her, Shin knelt beside their packs and began unpacking the camping supplies. The soft rustling of canvas mixed with the bubbling of the spring while the cool night breeze carried the earthy scent of moss and damp stone. He retrieved two canned rations they had purchased from the Adventurer's Guild earlier that day and held them up.

"Lena, what would you like for dinner?" he asked. "Meat loaf or corned beef?"

Lireina barely glanced at the cans before waving dismissively with a grin.

"Forget about that. Come join me! The water feels amazing!"

Shin scratched the back of his head.

"Y-You sure?"

"Yeah!"

After a brief moment of hesitation, Shin began changing for the bath. He folded his clothes neatly beside his backpack until only his boxers remained. Taking a slow breath, he walked toward the steaming spring, testing the temperature with one foot.

Lireina tilted her head before pointing toward his remaining garment.

"You should take those off too."

"W-What?" Shin nearly shouted, his face turning bright red.

"It'll soak up the mineral water and could ruin the fabric." A mischievous smile slowly spread across Lireina's face as her emerald eyes sparkled with amusement. "Or is little Shin getting shy?"

"You're one to talk!" Shin protested, pointing right back at her. "Turn around first! Go!"

"Hehe. You're such a scaredy-cat."

Although she continued teasing him, Lireina obediently turned around, folding her arms across the edge of the spring while facing the opposite direction. Her shoulders trembled slightly as she tried to suppress a laugh.

Taking advantage of the moment, Shin hurriedly removed his boxers, folded them with the rest of his clothes, and quickly slipped into the water. The natural spring embraced him with soothing warmth that immediately eased the soreness from the long hike. Heat seeped into his stiff muscles while the crisp mountain air cooled his face, creating a pleasant contrast that made him sigh with relief.

"I'm in," Shin said quietly.

Lireina looked back over her shoulder, giggling once she saw him safely submerged.

"See? I told you it feels wonderful."

"It really does."

The two rested peacefully in the steaming water as silence settled around them once again. Tiny ripples spread across the spring whenever either of them shifted slightly, while wisps of steam drifted lazily into the clear night sky. The stars above shone brilliantly without clouds to obscure them, and the pale moonlight reflected across the surface of the water like scattered silver.

Lireina leaned back against the smooth stone and gazed upward.

"Look!" she said excitedly. "There's the Big Dipper!"

Shin followed her gaze, squinting toward the countless stars scattered overhead.

"I... can't really make out the shape."

"You can if you know where to look."

She slowly scooted closer until their shoulders lightly brushed beneath the warm water. Raising one slender finger toward the heavens, she carefully traced an invisible line from one bright star to another.

"See? Connect these stars like this."

"I... see..." Shin murmured.

In truth, he barely noticed the constellation.

His thoughts had completely wandered elsewhere.

The gentle warmth of the spring had already made him relax, but now he was painfully aware that their arms were touching beneath the water. Every slight movement sent tiny ripples across the surface, and the innocent contact made his heartbeat quicken despite his efforts to remain calm.

Oblivious to his flustered thoughts, Lireina casually wrapped both hands around his arm while continuing her lesson.

"And those stars over there lead toward the North Star," she explained with a smile.

Shin swallowed nervously, forcing himself to focus on the night sky instead of the warmth beside him.

Before he could gather his thoughts, Lireina leaned over and planted another quick kiss on his flushed cheek.

"W-What was that?" Shin exclaimed, nearly splashing the water in surprise.

Lireina covered her mouth as she laughed.

"Oh? Does little Shin not want kisses from Big Sis Lena anymore?"

Her playful smile was impossible to resist, and the teasing sparkle in her emerald eyes made it clear she was thoroughly enjoying every second of watching him become hopelessly embarrassed.

Shin noticed that Lireina had grown noticeably bolder. The shy, flustered elf from earlier had been replaced by someone playful, teasing him every chance she got. A smile slowly spread across his face as he decided it was time to turn the tables.

Before Lireina realized what he was doing, Shin gently placed a hand behind her back and guided her closer until they were face to face. Their noses were barely a centimeter apart, and he could feel the warmth of her breath mingling with his.

"Kya!" Lireina squeaked, her emerald eyes widening in surprise.

Shin leaned in just enough for his voice to become a soft whisper.

"I'll show you how dangerous teasing can be."

"H-Hey..." Lireina let out a nervous laugh, though the blush spreading across her cheeks betrayed her confidence. Her pointed ears twitched rapidly as her heartbeat raced. "I-I was only joking... P-Please forgive me..."

Shin chuckled.

"No. If you don't want this, then move away."

For a brief moment, neither of them moved.

Shin gazed into Lireina's shimmering emerald eyes, which were trembling with anticipation rather than fear. Her breathing had become slow and uneven, and the steam curling around them only made the moment feel more intimate. Seeing that she made no attempt to pull away, Shin slowly closed his eyes and leaned forward.

Lireina's heart skipped a beat.

She closed her eyes as well.

Their lips met in a gentle kiss, soft and unhurried. The warm water lapped quietly against their shoulders while the cool mountain breeze brushed across their damp hair. Time seemed to stand still as they simply enjoyed each other's presence, communicating emotions that words could never fully express.

Without thinking, Shin wrapped his arms around her waist. Lireina happily returned the embrace, resting against him as their skin met beneath the comforting warmth of the spring. The steady rhythm of each other's heartbeat and the quiet sounds of bubbling water surrounded them, making the world beyond the hot spring seem to disappear.

After several lingering moments, Shin slowly pulled back with a contented smile.

"I still can't believe you accepted my confession," he said softly. "You've been the person I admired for as long as I can remember. I always thought my feelings would stay one sided, but now... you're my girlfriend."

Lireina's expression softened.

"To be honest..." she admitted with a small laugh, "I always thought you were adorable. Even back then, whenever we met, I couldn't help wanting to fuss over you. You always had this earnest look that made me want to protect you."

Shin grinned mischievously.

"So that's why you always treated me like a kid."

"Because you were a kid," Lireina replied with a laugh, lightly squeezing his arm. "I wasn't flirting with you. I just thought you were incredibly cute."

"I know," Shin said, chuckling. "I'm only teasing you."

Lireina let out a relieved sigh before sinking deeper into the hot spring until only the lower half of her face remained above the water. Tiny bubbles escaped as she playfully blew into the surface, avoiding his amused gaze.

Shin laughed and gently patted her golden hair, his fingers brushing through the silky strands that glistened beneath the moonlight.

"You know," he said, "I think the roles are reversed now. I look older than you these days. Anyone who saw us together might think I'm the older one."

Lireina lifted her head and narrowed her eyes in mock annoyance.

"As long as you don't start calling me 'Grandma,' I'll let that comment slide."

"I'll do my best."

"Hmph. Good answer."

Unable to suppress her smile any longer, Lireina leaned against him once more, wrapping her arms around his waist. Shin returned the embrace without hesitation, and together they quietly enjoyed the soothing warmth of the spring beneath the vast, star-filled sky. Neither of them felt the need to speak again. The gentle breeze, the bubbling water, and the comforting closeness they shared were more than enough to make the night unforgettable.
