The bodyguard was also in a pinch. Last night, Ji Chuan snuck out of the house when no one was paying attention to where he was going and ended up getting entangled in trouble. If not for the fact that Yu Cheng was in the restaurant where Ji Chuan got into trouble who knows what kind of tragedy might have taken place?

However even though Yu Cheng somehow managed to protect Ji Chuan, he ended up injuring his hands. Everyone knew how important the hands of a scholar were, now that such a thing had happened, the guard was certain that this matter was not going to end here.

She turned to look at Old Master Tong who was crying and sighed. Men were treated like jewels to begin with, now that Yu Cheng was injured like this, she was certain that the family of Yu Cheng would not stay quiet either.

“The matter was serious, which is why my mistress sent me here with Master Yu first. His injuries have been dealt with so he will be fine for the time being——”

“What do you mean that he will be fine? His hands have been mangled! My grandson was going to become a scholar and bring glory to my family’s name but now because of your young master, my grandson has fallen into this state! Do you think that his getting away with his life is everything!?

So in the eyes of the headmaster of that great academy the life of us small commoners does not matter?” Old Master Tong shrieked angrily while glaring at the woman in front of him.

His life had fallen into pieces and he was waiting for Yu Cheng to become better and better before passing the scholar exams and changing the trajectory of his life.

If Yu Cheng became a scholar then even if he did not pass the Official Scholarly Exams, he would be able to earn a decent sum with his title of an elementary scholar.

But now everything was in shambles!

“Of course not! How can you accuse my mistress with such a serious accusation?” The guard spoke with a panicked expression. This was a rather serious allegation, if it was proven then no one would respect the academy’s headmaster.

The quarrel continued to grow while Shen Li stared at the wrists of Yu Cheng. Even though they were wrapped in a white bandage for some reason Shen Li couldn’t help but remember the man from that night who trespassed inside their family home.

“What’s wrong?” Sensing that the mer next to her was staring at the unconscious Yu Cheng with a frown, Yu Dong felt slightly upset as she did not like her husband looking at another man.

It made her feel like Shen Li was concerned about Yu Cheng, which did not settle well with her.

Of course, Shen Li noticed the gaze of his wife. He sighed and then pinched her cheek, “What are you thinking you bottle of vinegar? I just can’t help but remember that man who broke into our house. Ah Chi cut the wrist of the man on the same spot where Yu Cheng’s bandages are tied.”

It could be a simple coincidence as well but Shen Li couldn’t help but feel that there was more to the situation than they could see.

Yu Dong narrowed her eyes as she turned to look at Yu Cheng after hearing Shen Li’s words. Well, she had to admit that this cousin of hers was not a rather good man either. He was selfish and petty, and to make things even more complicated, Yu Cheng was indeed one of those people who liked small gains. What if he really was behind that incident?

But …

“It has been more than a week since that incident,” after saying the doubts in his mind, even Shen Li thought that he was thinking too much. “And the cuts that the man received were not that shallow but quite deep. There is no way Yu Cheng would put himself in danger again, right? Because that would be equivalent to giving up on his hands completely.”

Yu Dong however did not agree with Shen Li’s perspective. Even though Yu Cheng’s condition was not that favourable at the moment and there was a high chance that he would end up losing all the strength and control over his hands—— he was being treated as the saviour of the mer son of the Headmaster of the academy.

With this title alone Yu Cheng can live a much better life than he was living at the moment. He might even get a decent-paying job that doesn’t ask much, it could be said that even if Yu Cheng gave up on his hands, he might get a good life later on.

“We can never be certain about anything,” remarked Yu Dong as she turned on her feet. “I once saw a man eating his own flesh because he wanted to survive. Sometimes for the sake of a better life, people would do things that you cannot even imagine.”

She then turned to look at Shen Li who seemed a bit concerned. Her lips instinctively curled into a light smile as she ruffled his hair and said, “Of course since we have no evidence. I will let this man have a few days off of relief.”

Shen Li nodded and the two of them returned home. Of course, for the sake of avoiding trouble and gossip, Yu Dong sent a mammy with some herbs that were average-priced to Yu Cheng. Stay tuned to My Virtual Library Empire
