It was none other than Chen Yucai.

But little did he know, there were two of them.

And a dog!

To him, the situation was simply unbelievable.

Su Bai took a step forward:

"Well?"

He wasn’t exactly impressed with the old man’s appearance.

He had a pointed mouth, gaunt cheeks, and two wisps of a mustache—the spitting image of a rat spirit. His eyes were turbid and lifeless. No matter how you looked at him, he didn’t resemble a master chef in the slightest.

"If my guest isn’t afraid, then this old man certainly has nothing to fear!"

The old man slung the ragged cloth he used for wiping tables over his shoulder and, with that, headed toward the back kitchen.

"Have a seat."

Su Bai casually found a table and sat down, then looked up at Chen Yucai:

"Scared?"

Chen Yucai was stunned for a moment, then burst out laughing:

"If you’re not afraid, Brother Daoist, then I’m certainly not afraid either!"

With that, he sat down across from Su Bai.

THUMP!

The Silver-White Dog Demon also bounded over, quietly settling onto another chair.

Its mouth hung open, drool streaming down.

It waited quietly for the meal to begin.

The sight before him left Chen Yucai astonished and suspicious. Something seemed to occur to him, and his attitude grew even more respectful:

"Brother Daoist, may I ask... are you a cultivator?"

"In this world, who isn’t a cultivator?"

Su Bai gave him a look full of profound meaning.

"Eating is cultivation, practicing martial arts is cultivation, even taking a walk is cultivation. Every single act is a form of cultivation."

"I have been enlightened."

Chen Yucai shook his head with a wry smile. He had already confirmed the suspicion in his heart.

He asked no more questions, instead continuing his introduction for Su Bai:

"The food and wine here in Fireworks Alley are good, but the ingredients are quite ordinary. There are no mountain delicacies or wild game, just the kind of food common people eat."

"Sometimes, exotic delicacies aren’t necessarily tastier than a simple meal."

As the two were chatting, Su Bai’s expression shifted. He looked at the old man who was approaching with their food and wine:

"This stir-fried pork with green peppers is much more delicious than stewed bat, don’t you think?"

The old man was in mid-stride when he heard the words "stewed bat," and his body suddenly trembled.

Though it was only for an instant, the two men and the dog all noticed.

Su Bai’s expression remained unchanged. The Silver-White Dog Demon licked its paws, staring eagerly at the serving tray. Chen Yucai’s brow furrowed, his mind racing.

"Sirs, your food and wine."

The old man spoke in a slightly hoarse voice as he placed the dishes on the table.

Chen Yucai watched him closely.

A layer of fine, black fur had begun to sprout on the backs of the man’s hands.

When he looked up, he saw that thick, black fur had also sprouted all over the old cook’s face and body.

The shadow behind him began to stretch, as if a pair of black wings were rapidly unfurling.

A bat demon!

Chen Yucai’s heart pounded. He was about to leap to his feet when he felt a sudden weight on his shoulder, forcing him back down into his seat.

His expression froze as he turned his head to look.

From the empty air, a withered hand slowly emerged and rested on his shoulder.

Then, an old Daoist with a white beard and hair gradually materialized out of the void.

Chen Yucai trembled, the shout he was about to let out getting caught in his throat.

The old man’s aura was simply terrifying.

"I’m not too late, not too late..."

The old Daoist landed gently, letting out a sigh of relief tinged with lingering fear.

"Master?"

Seeing the old Daoist appear, the bat demon’s expression froze. The black fur on his body vanished in the blink of an eye, and he dropped to his knees.

"Ready to fight at the slightest provocation?"

"So reckless! One of these days, you’ll get yourself killed and you won’t even know how!"

The white-haired old Daoist shot a harsh glare at his disciple.

Only then did he turn to Su Bai, respectfully clasping his hands in a salute:

"Tianyunzi of the Celestial Secret Sect."

"I greet you, Senior!"
