Great Doctor Ling Ran

Chapter 843 - Courteous

Chapter 843: Courteous

Ren Qi learned in earnest.

Every morning, he would follow resident doctors to perform ward rounds, performed some minor tasks that he could and had to do, such as writing admission records and discharge records, attaching examination sheets, perform consultations for other surgery departments as well as the Internal Medicine Department, and supervise Yu Yuan’s thesis…

If there were no emergencies, once Ren Qi persisted to noon after living through his fulfilling life, he could breathe a sigh of relief, eat a small, satisfying lunch and have enough energy for him to last until night. Then, he would follow the schedule that was already set and enter the operating theater according to the sequence set on the schedule to begin a fulfilling afternoon. He would help Chief Surgeon Zhang Anminto hold on a laparoscope, help Chief Surgeon Lu Wenbin hold on a microscope, and help Chief Surgeon Ma Yanlin lift legs up…

Ren Qi would only be able to participate in Ling Ran’s surgeries if luck was on his side. Most of the time, he could only watch him.

The number of assistants for surgery was limited. Even though Ling Ran constantly performed enough surgeries for an entire department, everyone still had to fight for the position as the first or second assistant.

As a surgeon who was over for in-service training, the most convenient place for Ren Qi was a place where he could watch surgeries at a close distance. After blending in and asking questions at the hospital staff, he got to know that Ma Yanlin, Lu Wenbin, and Zhang Anmin were still Ling Ran’s main assistants most of the time.

So, this was a rare opportunity for Ren Qi.

He was already a senior attending physician. Once he returned to his hospital after his training, he would have to work hard and compete to be an associate chief physician. After he became an associate chief physician, there would be a slim chance for him to be where he was now—he would not be able to leave the hospital for a few months and devote himself to improving his skills.

Even if there was a chance, he might not want to get out again.

The competition in county hospitals was crueler than that in hospitals like Yun Hua Hospital. Work was usually just enough for the doctors there. Once Ren Qi managed to snatch up the position of an associate chief physician, he had to compete for the limited spot of getting his own treatment group, and he might even need to fight to take over the department director when he retired…

If he left for a few months during that period of time, he might fall behind his competitors, and this kind of regression cannot be covered by just improving his skills a little.

In the words of many youngsters, doctors like Ren Qi lived lives where they must be able to see the end of the paths they wanted to take. However, very few doctors could reach their goals, and those who could could be considered to be as rare as the blue moon.

Ren Qi knew this very well, so he worked extra hard.

Ren Qi stuck to the schedule of getting up at four in the morning and clock off work at eight or nine in the evening. After all, he was only going back to his dorm to sleep, and thus, he did not want to waste any time at all.

After persisting for four to five days, Ren Qi was used to this routine.

Now, he could unscrupulously wake up patients at four in the morning and draw their blood, and eat pork trotters at six o’clock while he watched Achilles tendon repairs. In the afternoon, he could also help Doctor Yu Yuan pick up foreign bodies in the emergency room in his spare time…

Ren Qi felt that he had adapted to life in Yun Hua’s Emergency Medical Center. Then, he heard new arrangements being made.

“Let’s come to work early tomorrow and do more surgeries.” Ling Ran made a decision when the last surgery was completed.

“Then I’ll inform the Department of Surgery. What time?” Zuo Cidian did not look at other people or ask their opinions, because other people’s opinions did not matter.

Ling Ran thought about it and said, “We can start the surgeries one and a half hours in advance… so that means that we’ll be starting at two o’clock. The doctors involved in the surgery need to come early, and the doctors who did not participate in the surgery can come in different shifts.”

“Will this happen for several days?” Zuo Cidian asked.

“Yup, I’m going to finish the surgeries in the Emergency Medical Center and go to the General Surgery Department.” Ling Ran still watched single-site laparoscopy surgeries done by Chief Physician Dan, who was from the General Surgery Department, every day. Since he was learning skills himself, he cannot possibly master it in one go, as was what he did with the techniques given to him by the system. He had to work hard to learn it every day, but once a long period of time was needed for it, Ling Ran found it a waste of time.

Dan Quan’s surgeries started at nine o’clock and occasionally at ten o’clock. He had about two to three days every week where he used to perform surgeries, and he will do around three surgeries during those days. If it had to be put in words, aside from the two or three hours of surgery in the morning, Dan Quan’s remaining working hours were all coincidentally times where Ling Ran did not perform any surgeries whatsoever.

After listening to Ling Ran’s order, Zuo Cidian immediately understood. “This way, if the surgeries are performed a little earlier every morning, the surgeries in the Emergency Medical Center will not be affected.”

“Yes.” Ling Ran nodded in satisfaction.

“Then I will make arrangements for the surgeries. I’ll arrange it so that we’ll try to do surgeries like hepatectomy in the morning as much as possible, and then at about eight o’clock, I will arrange surgeries such as knee arthroscopies. With this, we can space out the use of the operating theaters.” Zuo Cidian naturally came up with a plan.

Once again, Ling Ran agreed.

Ren Qi was stunned when he heard this. There was only one sentence running in his mind. ‘That’s not morning, it’s dusk! Dusk!’

However, doctors who were here for in-service training had always been insignificant in the grand scheme of things.

From the second day, Ling Ran started spamming Energy Serums and caught up his surgery volume in the Emergency Medical Center. While he watched Dan Quan’s surgeries, other doctors were able to rest for a while. But the diligent and ambitious doctors would not truly take a break.

Chief Physician Dan had gradually become used to Ling Ran’s presence.

This was especially in the morning. Even if he was not late, when he saw Ling Ran, he would feel inexplicably guilty.

“Ling Ran, you’ve really trained yourself to look imposing. It’s better than Old Huo’s.” Dan Quan made some excuses. After all, he was a chief physician from the General Surgery Department. It was fine even if he teased the Emergency Medical Center a little.

Ling Ran only glanced at Dan Quan indifferently. He did not even bother to reply to him.

“Aww, if you behave like this, people will think you’re not good at socializing.” Chief Physician Dan was now more familiar with Ling Ran, so he could speak freely with him now.

Ling Ran’s expression remained indifferent. When he looked at Chief Physician Dan, he said, “I’ve never been good at socializing, anyway.”

“Well, at least you know that.” Chief Physician Dan’s emotions were stirred up, and he was immediately in the mood to chat. “But for me, your passion for learning deserves some praise…”

*Ring*

The phone on the wall in the operating theater suddenly rang, interrupting the outburst of emotions that had accumulated in Chief Physician Dan.

Everyone schooled their expressions.

If the phone in the operating theater rang, then the caller definitely did not make the call for a chat.

“Hello?” A circulating nurse picked it up and answered it. She then brought the phone to Chief Physician Dan. “It’s from the department director.”

“Bring it over here.” Chief Physician Dan shrugged his shoulders, motioned for the nurse to hold the phone to his ear, and asked, “Director, I’m in the middle of a surgery.”

“Okay. Is Ling Ran with you?” The voice of the General Surgery Department director penetrated the air.

Chief Physician Dan hesitated, looked at Ling Ran, and said, “Yes, he’s with me.”

“How did it go? Are you more familiar with Ling Ran already?”

“A little.”

“Okay… after you’re done with the surgery, bring Ling Ran over. I’ll introduce him to a patient.” The department director’s tone was normal, and Dan Quan could not detect his emotions by listening to his voice.

But Chief Physician Dan understood what he meant the moment he heard it. The department director had a request for Ling Ran.

Chief Physician Dan could not help but stare at Ling Ran. He did not say much and made a promise. “No problem, I’ll bring him over.”

“Make sure to be polite,” the director of the General Surgery Department said before hanging up.
