Chapter 431: Chapter 312: Setting Booby Traps, Escaping to Safety
Song Ling’Er wasn’t asleep at all.
The past two days had been like a dream, and even now, she was filled with a strong sense of unreality.
That was why she didn’t dare to sleep.
She was afraid that if she woke up, she’d discover it was all a fantasy—that she was still in that narrow, filthy shack, enduring her father’s abuse.
That would make her break down completely.
For this very reason, the moment Wu Liangchen knocked, she leaped out of bed and opened the door.
"Shh!" Wu Liangchen put a finger to his lips and then pointed outside.
Song Ling’Er understood immediately. She slowed her breathing, doing her best not to make a single sound.
"Good. Now, put on your shoes and come with me," Wu Liangchen said.
Once Song Ling’Er had dressed with lightning speed, Wu Liangchen crouched down. He carefully planted several grenades by the front door and at the top of the stairs. He tied a transparent filament to each pin, then gathered the other ends of the filaments together and placed them in the middle of the staircase.
A simple booby trap was now complete.
He didn’t set the tripwire at the door because he planned to trap them like rats in a barrel, hoping to inflict maximum casualties on the Tiger Slayer Gang.
After setting everything up, Wu Liangchen led Song Ling’Er away, disappearing into the vast darkness of the night.
A mere five minutes later, the Tiger Slayer Gang arrived.
Once they confirmed Wu Liangchen had fled into the trash district, the Tiger Slayer Gang used its considerable power to quickly gather intelligence on him and lock down his location.
So, upon seeing the small building belonging to Zhu Biao, Ding Tao gave a soft wave of his hand. The men immediately fanned out, forming a perimeter that enclosed the building, and then began to silently close in.
From the back, Yao Li asked in a low voice, "Do you think we’ll succeed this time?"
Xue Zhanhu stood in the shadows. His mechanical eye, glowing with a faint red light, made him look like some malevolent deity that only emerged in the dead of night, radiating a terrifying, intimidating aura.
"I don’t know."
Yao Li knew it was too early to say for sure, but the recent string of failures had shattered her confidence.
She bit her lower lip, her gaze fixed on the distance.
By now, Ding Tao and his men had reached the building.
He gave a subtle hand signal, and a man immediately stepped forward with professional tools. It only took him a few seconds to crack the old electronic lock.
The moment the door was open, the men rushed inside.
"First floor clear! No sign of anyone!" someone reported in a low voice after a swift search.
He started charging up to the second floor, but halfway up, his foot snagged on something. His heart clenched, and he managed to shout, "N—"
Before he could get the word out, flames erupted, followed by a deafening explosion.
To maximize the lethality, Wu Liangchen had planted five or six high-explosive grenades. Now, they all detonated at once, the force of the blast instantly causing the entire building to collapse.
Seeing this, Yao Li trembled. She felt so frustrated she could have coughed up blood.
’Of course.’
’Another failure!’
But just then, Xue Zhanhu, who had been lying in wait in the shadows, suddenly moved.
He bent his knees slightly and launched himself upward, shooting like a cannonball toward a specific point in the darkness.
Startled, Yao Li immediately gave chase.
Meanwhile, from atop a derelict building several hundred meters away, Wu Liangchen saw the massive figure hurtling toward him.
The figure hadn’t arrived yet, but the immense, oppressive aura was already suffocating.
But Wu Liangchen remained calm. He raised his gun and fired a series of controlled bursts.
RAT-A-TAT-TAT!
The gunshots rang out as bullets whistled through the air. Every single one struck Xue Zhanhu, who was still charging at high speed.
But it was completely useless.
Xue Zhanhu didn’t even bother to dodge. His mechanical arm instantly expanded into a shield, which he swung back and forth.
The bullets ricocheted off it, creating showers of sparks but leaving not a single scratch.
But amidst the dense hail of bullets, several dark shapes suddenly appeared.
Xue Zhanhu instinctively moved to block them with his shield, but once he got a clear look at the flying objects, he immediately wrenched his body around, trying to get out of the way.
’High-explosive grenades!’
But a few follow-up shots immediately detonated the grenades in mid-air.
BOOM!
The massive explosion engulfed the mid-air Xue Zhanhu.
Yao Li, arriving just behind him, saw the whole thing and couldn’t help but cry out in alarm.
In the next instant, a hail of bullets caught her completely by surprise, forcing her to retreat and take cover behind a corner.
At the same time, a furious roar echoed from above. Xue Zhanhu, clothes shredded and body charred in multiple places, charged toward Wu Liangchen’s building, bellowing in rage.
But if he was fast, Wu Liangchen was faster.
In almost the same instant he had thrown the grenades and pinned Yao Li down with a burst of suppressive fire, Wu Liangchen was already making his retreat.
So when Xue Zhanhu burst in, all he found was an empty room, without a single soul in sight.
Enraged, he smashed a fist into the derelict building, bringing it down in a heap of rubble. Then, he bellowed.
"That punk couldn’t have gotten far! Find him! I want you to tear this place apart if you have to, but you will find him!"
"Yes!"
The members of the Tiger Slayer Gang, just now recovering from the string of explosions, began a carpet search of the area.
